I'd like to get this but I'm afraid that when I have bought what I want with it, and there is €20 or whatever may be left, I'll be forced to just buy something I don't really need with it before it expires:( Any workaround for this?

I get around this with two paypal accounts. Send money from one to the other (which can accept payments).

Then spend the money on Ebay whenever i want... or i *think* you can send it back to your bank account but i haven't tried it.

you can transfer your funds to a bank acccount when your card expires, but seeing as you can get them in multiples of 10 you shouldn't have 2 much left over if you only get what you need

I think you can refund it but they charge you to do it.

yeah its 1.50 or somethin to get your money back

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,473 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

But paypal will take 48 cents off each transfer and also will steal $1 from the 3v voucher before you transfer any cash. So beware.

My local shop in Rathdowney also does them, you sometimes have to explain to some of the staff that they can do 3v vouchers.

That's a huge gap in the market that I am surprised no one has gone for.

Getting vouchers for amounts under 100 would be poor value with the fiver charge.

i just want to reg as a seller on eBay, i think this would be the best solution ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Ok, hehe, so what's the best way to get the most out of your money using these?

If say, I bought a €200 card, spent €110 on something and then wanted to buy something else for €100, can I stick another €10 on it or do I have to cash out the €90 and get a new card with €100 on it?

Can you cash out to any bank account or does it have to be PTSB? Is there a minimum/maximum transaction amount or does it just depend on the min/max you can have on the card? What's the max again? €350?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,163 ✭✭✭✭danniemcq

i'm 99% sure you need to buy another top up because each slip you get has a different credit card number on it

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,473 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

    €350 is the max.

You can't add funds to an existing card. You have to buy a new one with another €5 charge. To cash out the €90 you have left will involve you loosing €1.50 and waiting for a cheque to issue. You will probably have to wait till the expiry date to reclaim your money.

    i have an idea;

if you have money over from a purchase, send it to a mate via paypal then get him to sent it back again, it should work out less than the €1.50 charge ;)...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,473 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

No it wouldn't. It will cost 2x€0.48 transfer fees and paypal take the equiv of $1 approx €0.85 before you transfer any money.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,968 ✭✭✭jcoote

lads yis are thinkin too hard :p...there are a lot of bad things about the 3v thing but its a good idea that just needs devloping

    yeah your right, i think the key is to just buy a voucher for purchase of the price ie;

    the item is €175 you'd buy a €180 voucher.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,968 ✭✭✭jcoote

thats it pick a load of **** off say cdwow and do a dummy run (everything except putting in the CC number) and get a voucher to that value plus the 5er charge

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

So the paypal method will work out at about 20 cent dearer:eek: lol... but then again, transfers will be instant and you wont have to wait for the card to expire or anything, right?

So if you do the test run on cdwow for example, and it comes to €175, you have to do it in multiples of 10 so you have to spend €180? Now, when you go into a shop, do you ask for a €180 voucher and then you also pay €5 fee, or is the €5 fee taken from the €180 you give, meaning you're left with €175, which is ok for this particular purchase I suppose:)

I think the best option, if you have the money, is to just get the max of €350 on the card so it will be there if you ever need it and you wont be forced to go to Ballyfermot to get a new one which will be petrol money and the extra €5!

What happens if you forget to cash out/spend all your money before it expires? Will you be sent a cheque or is the money gone forever? How long do they last for anyway?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,473 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

No, you ask for a €180 voucher and you hand over €185.

You are sent a cheque for any unused money when the card expires less a €1.50 charge.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,968 ✭✭✭jcoote

several weeks it said on the site..never checked the expiry date when i got mine cos i used it 5 mins after gettin it..yeah i think its 185 including the 5er charge cormie...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Cool, not bad I suppose considering a regular CC will cost €40 per year.

Ok, can't find anything on the site that says how long it lasts, all it says is it will last until the expiry date:rolleyes:

Anyone have any idea how long it lasts?

Also, what's the registration for online? Do you need to register before you can go into a shop and put money on the card or do you do that first? Is there a non pre-paid version?

u register on the site and they send u out a xard (that bits free) and then u can login to check your transactions and that cos uu don't get a statement..handy if u wanna make a few buys on the side that u don't want the other half knowin about :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Ok, but do you have to register before you go into a shop or can you just go into any shop and get your card there and then and register later if you want?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,968 ✭✭✭jcoote

excatly. Pick up a card in a shop, register it online and go back to shop to purchase. Simple.

just back from the texaco ;)... got a €20 voucher (cost €25) 5 seconds l8r i get a text from 3v with my voucher details, holy **** that was fast...

now what's this CVV2 number? 3 digits - is it the same as the 3 number on the back of a CC ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

I'd say it probably is, when will your card expire? I wonder the more money you put on it, the longer it will be valid for??

How much was the petrol? :v:

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,473 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

yep, some internet sites need the cvv2 number.

I dosesn't matter how much you put on it they are still only valid till the end of the following month.

    lol

it says expires 03/06 - you get the expire date via text... :)

petrol was 107.9 but in the other texaco (off the nass rd) is was 105.9 :v:

    :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,473 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

That's right, the end of the following month of issue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Definitely the end of? So if you reg on 1st of Feb, it will be expired 1 second after 23:59 on 31st of March?

That's not too bad so, 2 months use basically for €5, 12 divided by 2 = 6 x €5=€30, cheaper than a normal credit card:) ok, you don't have the same freedom as a normal one but it's a good alternative:) Only thing is, it says you can't use it on gambling sites, no point in pointing you all to my sig then! lol

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,473 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

It won't work on pr0n sites either! :D

    ok i've a problem.... i just added the card to paypal, but for me to raise my spend limit or to even send money i need to go trough there PayPal's Expanded Use Program;
How to Enroll in the Expanded Use Program

You're just three steps away from the freedom of Expanded Use:

    Step 1:
Authorize PayPal to charge a €1.50 EUR Expanded Use Fee to your card. (You will receive a €1.50 EUR bonus in your PayPal account after you complete enrollment.)

    Step 2:
On your next credit card statement (monthly transaction history), find the 4-digit Expanded Use Number that will be printed in the item description section of the charge. It may take 3-4 business days for the number to appear on your statement.

    Step 3:
Log in to your PayPal account, click the Complete Expanded Use Enrollment link on your Account Overview, and enter your Expanded Use Number.

When you enter your Expanded Use Number, your enrollment will be complete. You'll have access to unlimited sending and withdrawals, and you will become a Verified Member of PayPal!

i rang them up (1890 943 220) and asked wht's the story with the 3v vouchers and she said (she was irish) basicly it's no use if you need to use the Expanded Use Program as you don't get a statement...

    :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,473 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

You do get a statement. It's online at www.3v.ie

Log in with your card number and ccv2 number.
