I went in to Tesco's to buy some Bud & I was asked to produce some ID which I did in the form of my Drivers licence, the shop assistaint then said we only accept Gardai ID's!!! WTF

I also happened to have a college ID in my wallet but even 2 forms of ID did'nt match a Gardai one. I asked him if I had my passport would he serve me & he said no...I've no Gardai ID so dose that mean I'm not over 18?

    Can they do this?

Don't think they can. They have to accept passport, garda id and drivers licence.

Baxtards, is it legal to do that?

    Object to their licence renewal.

Well, the have the right to refuse to serve anyone.... even if it's for an apple. In the end of the day, they own the shop.

Garda id only is what it says on the "we may ask for proof" in my local Tesco.

if you show them a legal state document, they must accept it as it states your name address and DOB.

But they do have the right to refuse service

What you should do is get a trolley full of drink and bring it up to the till placing everything carefully on the conveyer, taking loads of time. Then when they dont accept your ID walk out of the shop leaving everything behind for them to put back, putting that till out of action for a while.

But if they start to check-out the drink - run!

When I sued work in the dole office passports were not acceptable forms of identity - birth certs only.

My birth cert would be useless as I changed my name since. Passport all the way!

State documentation of your ID is all that s really neccessary, but I have heard of places asking for Garda ID only... it's rubbish, ID is ID especially state ID.

This happened me once before in tesco's in navan. I was asked for ID and I produced my licence and passport but they said their policy required garda ID. Can anyone explain this?- I had to get a garda to sign a form so I could get a passport and it cost 50 odd quid whereas a garda ID only costs about a tenner. Where's the difference?

fcuk me lads.....I suppose I'm really in the crap if I ever need to buy drink in Tesco's, I don't even have a Garda Id card....:D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,846 ✭✭✭Le Rack

Passport is €60 iirc and garda ID is €6 applied last week, A passport is a bigger thing, it's for international use too really, but therefore shops should accept that more easily than garda ID.

i was refused in tesco's even though i knew i would be... i had

    college id
    provisional license
cert saying i passed my driving test (was picking up a few drinks after my test for that night)
    and my passport.

showed them all and got refused.

it's their company policy - ie. it is not legally bound. you ever seen the signs in pubs saying "the owner retains to right to refuse admission", well this is the same thing, tesco's don't legally have to serve you, they don't have to take your money.

just go to o'briens or cheers or somewhere else, it's not like tesco will miss your money (although they are a good bit cheaper).

i'd like to see you get out of the country on a garda ID though :)

They can ask for whatever they want, and tbh probably only asked for garda ID because they believed your drivers license was faked.

As a side rant, drives license in this country is easily the most fake looking document ever, the sooner they move to a credit card sized, laser scanned ID the better (could even put it in my wallet then).

ive never been asked for the garda ID only, at many times my drivers licience worked sufficiently, also the fact that i was paying with a credit card must of helped.

yeh that's one problem with ireland, not one legal government ID is credit card sized.

i must get myself one of these garda id's never got one as i was told it can take up to 3 months.

Serious? It says on the form you have to fill out that it only costs €6

And I've never been asked for ID... only been going out properly since I was 17 but still never got asked.

A birth cert does not prove anything as it does not have a photograph on it to identify the owner! One could easily use someone else's. I would have thought that a driver's licence or passport would be much more acceptable.

Stupid as it is I suppose where I work as well only Birth Certs are accepted in order to process things dependant on identity....

AFAIK pubs cannot use these signs since the introduction of the Equal Status Act several years ago but I'm open to correction on this.

well this tesco thing works on the same level, even if pubs can't show them signs anymore.

"bud" you were buying budweiser. Tesco did you and your kidney a favour by declining to give you that píss water.

u see a few years ago there was a flood of fake drivers licenses so no-one would take one ...then it was garda id's so no-one wud take them as there were too many fakes ...then people started doing passports themselves..so now there not as "acceptable" so when i handed in my drivers license to a super valu he said "i know its fake but its not my duty to tell a real or a fake"..so long as you produce ID their not responsible for serving you

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,846 ✭✭✭Le Rack

so even if you give ID and they think it's ake they can still serve you?

But the dole office is probably more concerned that the person exists than if you are actually that person. Not quite sure how they think a birth cert is less forgable though.

You'll get to the UK fine on just a Garda ID or driving license.

It's tesco policy only to accept Garda ID for alcohol. The staff don't refuse you on a personal basis, the staff are just doing their job. My advice is to get over it and ask a customer is well over 18 to buy you drink or go to an offo.

/me is a tesco employee, pity me

they'll get us i n right hot water if security double checks someone's id and you didnt take garda id off them.

dunno why it is but that's their call to make, i just collect a payslip at the end of the day

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 165 ✭✭cmcquaid

same in aldi so i presume its the same in all supermarkets it seems they only accept garda id for some reason they only know

So let me see. In order to get a Garda id you need to go to the station and bring some sort of identification. A driving license for instance????

don't quote me on this but i think they look for a birth cert and a photo id.

    http://www.garda.ie/angarda/agecard.html

I've still to apply for mine. I have used my passport with no problems a good few times.

I've heard that it can take ages to get garda id, how long did it take to get yours?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,846 ✭✭✭✭eth0_

That is scandalous. Nowhere should be allowed to state they ONLY accept Garda ID! I'm 24 and i've no intention of getting a Garda ID at my age, they're great if you're a teenager but I should be able to have my age verified by my driving licence.

Is it some sort of money racket?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,578 ✭✭✭Scraggs

well mine took thirteen weeks exactly... not that i was counting obsessively or anything... depends really, one of friends got it in a month and another in 6wks.

I got served in Tesco after I handed in my Mothers drivers license instead of my own when I as asked.

How. It's their drink , they can choose to sell it to you under whatever (legal) criteria they choose.

Something needs to be cleared up here....they are legally obliged to accept a passport or drivers license. They are government documents...they can't refuse it.

Also note worthy, these signs that read 'so and so reserves the right to refuse admission' are also contradictory of laws. Unless you have done something wrong they can#t refuse you entry or service in any shop.

A shop is under no obligation to sell you anythign they don't want to sell you. It's their property and no one can force them t sell it.

Tesco can serve who ever they want to as long as they don't refuse on the basis of Race, Gender, Orientation etc. and even then it's debateable whether they can or not.

You have no right to be served. If you don't like it, write a letter or something else a tad more useful than bitching on an internet discussion board.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 409 ✭✭d@rk l0rd

I know that in Meath anyway, the only acceptable form of ID that will be accepted as a defence in the district court for licensed premises if they are prosecuted for selling drink to underage people is a Garda ID. Passports and driving licences are not accepted.

And then all you have to do is ask them why they are not serving you, if you are not doing anything wrong then they are liable under discrimination.
Same applies if you are refused from a pub or club for no good reason.

They can, by saying it's garda id only. If you claim discrimination it's up to you to rove they are discriminating against you, not the other way round.
