I need to improve my fitness. Been playing football and aint fit enough for it(smoking probaly doesnt help, but how and ever!)

Whats the best way? Should i do interval training i.e run for 2 minutes, 1 walking etc. or just jog for aslong as i can?

Which is best treadmill or bike? Seem to get bad pains on my lower leg, presume thats shin splints when i run on the treadmill. Are there excercises that i can do to help, or will i eventually get used to it? I know running on your front toes causes this so will try adjust my running style.

    cheers.

    smoking probaly doesnt help

You've summed it up there dude. It's very hard to get your breath with the kind of stop/start running involved in football when you've chest is full of sh(t from cigarettes.

Two things that I've done in the last couple of years which have really improved my overall fitness for football:
Give up the fags, completely. No cheeky ones with a few pints. No joints. Nothing.
Take up cycling. In and out to work (my commute is about 6 miles each way, usually 3 days a week). Great for clearing the chest of all the sh/t that's built up with the smokes. Good for the ankles and lower legs/knees, strengthens them up and if you're getting pains running on the road like shin splints, you need to find another way.

I know it's hard, but if you're serious about it, that's what you have to do.

These are the guidelines: Football is all about speed, quick recovery and more speed. Cycling, golf, jogging etc. are big no nos. The stronger you are the faster you are so do weights (squats, lunges and loads of core work) to strengthen your sprinting muscles. To emprove your endurance and aerobic capacity do sprints and tempo runs. This is how professional soccer teams and the top intercounty GAA football teams are training.

I'm not an expert but know the guidelines. If you are in a club ask an experienced trainer to do out a programme for you. There is plenty of good info on this forum also.
