    Hi,
    A friend of mine has Norton and is sick to her teeth of it as it slows down her pc and has let various trojans onto her pc. She is thinking of bining Norton and replacing it, what would you recommend?

    Is McAfee any good?

    She needs something that she can buy in a shop as no credit card for net purchases.

    Cheers,
    Jaqian

    Have to recommend AVG Antivrus as well. Have been using it for years, it's free and I've never got a virus. Automatically updates itself every day.

    Off topic: I imagine a lot of people now use AVG Free edition and it seems to me that it must be the market leader in the AntiVirus space. Does anyone see Grisoft charging for all AVG editions once they've got a Mircosoft-esque monopoly in this area in a few years time?

    Perhaps, at which point people will move onto another free one.

    avast! anti virus is another good free one, been using it for a few months now, no probs.

    another one would be bit defender, cheap-ish i think compared to mcafee/norton

    Mother of god don't but that rubbish onto your PC if it kills you.

    AVG-free is the one, Coupled up with Spybot - Search & Destroy & Ad-Aware SE Personal for killing those spywares and adwares and your Pc will be a fortress complete ;) Update their definitions regualry through

    Ok so AVG it will be. Meanwhile any idead why Norton would be blocking access to the net and how to change it? My friend had a serious infestation of virii & adware and we couldn't get avg free or norton to run at all (even tried safe mode). In the end we gave up wiped the hdd and re-installed. Got everything setup, installed Norton it updated itself etc but won't let us access Google, Boards etc unless its turned off which isn't really an option. Any suggestions?

    Is it just Norton Antivirus that you have, or is it an Internet Security/Firewall Package? If the former, I haven't a clue. If the latter, you may have to grant permissions for the browser programs

    well it maybe the fact that the firewall has to actually be configured :rolleyes:
    By default it will block nearly everything, and it is up to the customer to configure it as to what they want to use. If you check your program rules IE or firefox etc is probably set to block or generic host process is probably blocked also.

    nod32 and this

    should sort you out

    @cython: Its anti-virus & firwall.

    @gline: last time round it worked straight outta the box. When I'd try to access a site it'd ask "do you want to conect to.." then it would create a rule. But thats not happening this time. I'll have to look into the settings but I'm really getting pi55ed off at Norton's hogging resources letting in virii and general crappiness.

    @danniemcq: I'll give the 3V a shot. Cheers.

    Ok thinking of getting AVG Plus Firewall Edition: http://www.grisoft.com/doc/AvgPlusFw/lng/us/tpl/tpl01

    Has anybody used the firewall, is it any good?
