    I am going to start a thread about what people have and why they went for that car.
    I know there is something like it in the main motors section but I think the classic car section may have be a tad more intriguing.

    If this is repeat please remove.

    To kick off.......

    I have a 74' 280ce in dark blue with cream MBTex.
    I bought it for 3 reasons.

    My Dad also had one for some time when I was a kid, so theres some nostalgia there.

    I wanted a classic and despite loving Italian cars previous experience has left me less than enthusiastic about owning another.

    Lastly the average naughties Euro box is only now getting to the levels of refinement this thing has. ( The level of engineering stuns me every time I go near it or drive it )

    Good idea for a thread.

    I have a 1972 Citroën DS 20.

    I got sick of paying for depreciation, road tax and benefit in kind so I decided I would try the classic route.

    I cast about for a bit, but nothing really grabbed me. I went to the Terenure show, and there was plenty of eye candy, but nothing that I could see myself loving. Then I spotted a nice pale blue DS tucked away in the corner of the field. I sat in the back, and that was it - it had to be the DS.

    I bought mine initially based purely on the looks of the car - to my eyes they are the most beautiful, elegant saloon car ever made. It has a sculpted feel that is very rare - it doesn't look like it is made from metal.

    Since owning it, the sheer brilliance of the car has won over the looks. The level of engineering excellence and innovation is amazing now, absolutely unbelievable when you consider the car was launched in 1955. I've had the car 3 years, and the ownership experience gets better with each passing month. Every journey has a sense of occasion, and I use my car about 4 days a week.

    I have a 1964 Land Rover Series IIA 109 utility

    ie a long wheelbase land rover with no windows in the back.

    I bought it with the great idea of having a capable tow vehicle that wasn't going to cost the earth in tax and insurance. that was two and a half years ago now. I'm still restoring and modernizing and tweaking it to be just so.

    Great thread indeed!

    Old cars just rock! Had to be a roadster for me - was always going to be a convertible. Always liked the look of the Fiat 124 Spider, even though I'd never actually seen one in real life. Reseach showed with eBay you can find any part you ever needed, and that the old Fiat blocks ran forever if treated like one of the family.

    When my old car 'retired' in December 2004 I had the perfect excuse to take advantage of the financial advantages. Found a 72 Spider (best year for a number of reasons) on a Fiat/Lancia enthusiasts website and spent 3 months getting her in from Canada.

    Old cars are the perfect distraction, whether in them, under them, fixing them, upgrading them, polishing them or just avoiding household jobs in general!

    I've a 1969 Ford Mustang 351 sportsroof v8 and a 1972 Reliant Scimitar 3.0 v6 estate.

    Always loved the sound and shape of the mustang, at first was looking at getting a 68 fastback but then saw the 69 and knew that was the car for me with its shark front and scooped boot.
    So bought the first blue manual I could find.:)

    Don't know why I bought the Scimitar:confused:

    I had a TR7... PITA for maintenance, and rapidly became a money pit. As well as that, leaving it outside was a big no no as they just will not stand up to the elements. Rustproofing will not cure the problem, as with many old machines, the problem lies in poor bodyshell design. I now have a lovely E30, and I'm in the process of making it 100%. Happily that won't take long, and I can leave it outside without cringing everytime I see a grey cloud in the sky.

    Not a classic yet of course, but they're getting rare, and for some reason, you never see a dog, well almost never at least. Most E30s are in tip top state, although I saw an absolutely disgusting E36 today in the southside of Cork, modified to within an inch if its life...badly.

    I want a mustang too though...

    my dad worked for a garage in carlow & they sold opels, so every now & then he would bring home a manta . it was love at first sight.
    he would bring us for a spin & that was it i said when i grew up id get one,
    so now i have 5:D
    this garage also had a black pontiac which i also fell in love with, but their is still time to get one of those i suppose.
    my dads every day car was a 74 morris minor so the manta was something special those days:)

    When I had a look at the car it turned out to be fairly ratty and huge, so big in fact it wouldn't have fit in my drive way. I spotted the Mustang while I was there and he gave me a drive and although it was above what I wanted to pay I just could resist. IT wasn't pre 70's or a fast back but it had a 5.8 V8 and gave me a tingly feeling in my underpants, it still does.

    I've a 1971 Alfa 2000 GTV.

    Met all my criteria..

    o- Classy looks (if you're a fan of Italian styling)
    o- Not overly complex mechanically
    o- Lots of spares and knowledge available
    o- Practical to drive in today's traffic, happy driving at 5mph or 70mph
    o- Kinda reminds me of the Toyata Mark II Corona's we had at home (any of these still alive ??)
    o- Available in red :)
    o- And most of all, a whole lot of fun to drive :D

    1968 289 Coupe Ford Mustang:

    Always liked the shape. First time I remember thinking of one was when there was a cartoon on TV called Pole Position, think the girl in it drove a 64/65 conv. Then I spotted one for sale, was going through my "you only live once" phase and bought it. Really happy with it, lots of little jobs to do, but its in great condition, only upgrades left really.

    I have another american/irish car in mind yet, but its not classic until 2011 :(

    Toasty, so you have a real GT, not a clone, which is about $90,000 (in or around) and are insured to drive it, were "inspired" by gone in 60 seconds and you're still in school and doing your leaving cert this year???! Hmmmmmm...

    1979 Ford Escort MkII RS2000 (base model).

    My late father worked for Ford for over 20 years in Dagenham. The brand is in the blood therefore.

    The RS2000 was the Cosworth of it's time, and I always lusted after one. When I was playing rugby I got a lift home after training one night from the local Ford Dealer, who rallied successfully, and who scared me ****less.

    As he careered off I said to myself "I'll have one of them some day".

    It took quite a while, but I got one eventually. 2 owners, low miles and rust and rot free.

    It gets some spirited use and has done numerous trackdays in the UK.

    Not strictly a classic, but it is in my eyes, a '93 Toyots MR2, my dad saw these parked outside a Toyota garage in France in the early nineties, and said then he would get one, and he did, about 4/5 years ago now

    On another of my favourite forums they have what's called the 'egg nog' test (named after the guy who invented it) You have to write your user id on a piece of paper and stick it over the gear lever and then post a pic of it.

    I was asked to do it for my Golf Gti before they would believe me - but usually its guys who pretend to have Ferrari's etc that get caught out.:D

    Some people are very good with photoshop :D

    Of course, ive a spare shifter handle i could sell toasty that he could use to prove it that way...

    Sorry Jemi - but you have to admit your imagination does get a bit carried away now and again.
    I would probably have been the same if the internet existed when I was your age - what I used to do was visit car showrooms all over the place pretending to be a serious buyer in order to get test drives in nice cars when I did not have a penny.:rolleyes:

    I haven't seen the documentary, but when you mention it had 1000bhp than I'm sure it's not the one. The car arriving at my specialists place is going to have a tuned Cobra-Jet big block with all the trimmings and 5 speed manual, so I'd say a total of just over 400 bhp which is still pretty impressive. The car in the picture is not the actual car itself. It's the 'show car' of the company that makes these 'Eleanor/Elanor' clone/lookalikes, but the car is going to look almost identical.
    Essentially all Eleanor conversion are going to look very similar, as the car in the movie they are trying to replicate, is in fact allready a copy of the original. It's a 'bling-bling'ed' up version of Shelby GT500KR.
    They're several crowds in the States now that have jumped on the bandwagon, and have started churning out Eleanor/Elanor clones/lookalikes. Some more advanced than others. It's not that hard to do, since the Mustang is such a popular car, and there is a massive scene of specialists, custom builders, restoration crowds, dealers and enthousiasts around the world, so there isn't a screw, spring or modification that isn't available anywhere in the world.
    You've got conversions that purely adapt the body of the car with a special body kit, and respray the car in its grey metallic colour. Add the bells and whistles, and you've a basic clone. Other cars go as far as reaching back to the original and upgrade it to Shelby GT500KR spec, including engine, suspension and gearbox tweaks and upgrades. And, according to Atheist, it seems they've even created a 1000bhp version of it well !!!!

    46 K isn't really that much for a shelby clone, you can buy them direct from Shelby for 120k, no doubt those ones would vertually new everything, apart from the shell. I've been very surprised recently to discover just how much us available for the Mustang and how cheaply a lot of parts can be. 69 gave me this link http://www.npdlink.com/modules.php?name=Mustang_Catalog&file=index&func=download
    and I bought some stuff from them and virtually every nut and bolt that goes on the car can be got. Unfortunatly for me the 351 Cleveland engine parts are not as easily available as say the 289 or 302 which seem to have a lot of kits cheap.I would guess if someone had a tatty old fastback with a good engine and body an elanor lookalike would be very reasonable cost wise to achieve, I say reasonable compared to 40 odd K,I'm not trying to do you out of buisness btw paul.

    Not sure if it counts but used to own (2 years ago) a 1973 Mercedes 230CE coupe when i was living in australia. Was always amazed with the car as had power steering, vacum central locking and electic sunroof.
    Beautiful blue colour with tan leather. Had no centre pillar so with all the windows down it looked so good. Cost me 4000 dollars which was about 3000 euros and about 200 bucks to insure. Drove it everyday to work. Drank fuel quite a bit so much that i ran out of fuel 3 times. (3 gear auto leaded petrol) . Even thought about converting it to LPG.

    Left it out too much in the winter rain so that the chassis rusted thru ('73 was a bad year for mercs) and just got p***ed off so much with it (found about the rust after paying 2500 dollars to get the steering fixed and the transmission overhauled) that i left the council impound it when it ran out of insurance.

    Kinda regretted that one. (more money than sense)

    But still into mercs and now have a W124 Estate. Last of the true mercs.

    Hi, I got a 1974 Rover P6 2200SC a forthnight ago. I was looking for a DS but the ones I looked at in Ireland and the UK were rubbish for the money they were asking for so I went for the p6 instead. The car will look a lot different in time as I am getting 1970's reconditioned minilite alloy wheels etc to give it the 70 street-rod look. Another reason I got it is that the car is the same colour with the same wheel trim as the one driven by Vinnie Jones in the film Lock stock. All I need now is a sidekick and two shotguns. The amount of helpful classic rovers owners and the help and parts they have given me has surprised me so far. They have all been great. I may be hooked already. For the price I paid the car is serious value for money and pulls like a train. Stops Like one too!!!

    Ohh I like the MGC........................looks great !

    In 1973 that Merc would have been a 250CE W114 chassis, or possibly a 280CE. The 230CE didn't arrive until the W123 in about 1997, though Australia couldv'e been different too !

    Nice cars all but you are right about the rust on the '73 ish cars !

    21 years of age and I saw my first BMW E9 CS Coupe. It took 25 years before I could find one that was'nt a Rust Bucket and that I could afford.
    I now have 2, a 69 2800 CS in South Africa that took 4 years to rebuild and I have just used as a holiday car, touring 2800 kms in 3 weeks, mostly at way above the speed limits and a 74 3.0 CS that I am rebuilding in Galway

    I am headed a bit off topic but:
    I now have 2, a 69 2800 CS in South Africa that took 4 years to rebuild and I have just used as a holiday car, touring 2800 kms in 3 weeks, mostly at way above the speed limits

    Spent some time in SA in 04 touring and wow what beautifull roads, I'll bet doing it in the CS was fun, I also never once got stuck behind anyone, I noticed everyone pulled in as you approached despite there being no oncomming traffic.:)

    Your CS looks great btw
