    Provider: BT
    Exchange: Ferrybank Waterford

No upgrade yet.. still at 869Kbps down.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

Still at 440kps down....ffs.....missed out the previous upgrade as well as you can see. :o

Strange thing is though I normally only ever got 68kps upload for the last age - thats now jumped to what it more or less should have always been - 140kps. Tried tests all last night and this morning, keep getting the same consistant upload. I know it's not much but considering I was on about 70kps on a good day previous to this....

    Provider: BT
    Exchange: Oranmore

Since the upload speed has increased you may be getting the d/l speed you do because thats all your line can handle. Eircom, BT etc are providing RADSL (Rate Adaptive DSL) so the minimum d/l they guarentee is 256k.
Check your modem/router settings and it will probably tell you the theoretical speed of your line, then you'll know for sure if the upgrade has taken place.

Just looked on Eircoms broadband support page and they are due to be carrying out some work on the Oranmore exchange on the 31st

    http://dsl-support.eircom.net/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE/&/?St=57&E=0000000000008950600&K=8018&SXI=5&case=8439&branch=4

Suppose you could live in hope that its your exchange thats at fault and not your line.

Would there be any reason why the BT Service wouldnt have been upgraded off the same exchange?

Nah, I live practically right on an exchange and its a pretty new line so there's no reason why shouldn't be the full whack. My friend who lives very close to me has 2mb bb no problem.

It's really quite annoying. Perhaps, hopefully, the reason mentioned above about work being carried out on the exchange will shed some light :D

Hey MobileInfantry, Im on the Oranmore exchange and I've been upgraded 3072/384

    getting

    2.69 down
    310 up

Im with Eircom though, not sure if that would help you.

When I moved in I had to bypass the internal wiring in the house and just hook up to the line that was coming in from the street, somthing inside the house was making me fail, after that i was fine.

Fcuk sake.....I got an email back today form BT, fair play to them they were fast about it, but they just told me....you should be on 2048....please ring bb tech help....etc.

And yeah, I used to have crappy problems with stuff like sky digi in the house interfering with modem but all that was sorted ages ago....

Downloaded now reduced to 320kps..not even dsl at this stage...upload increased again to 160....

Dunno what to think of the whole thing seeing as everyone else in my area is happily blasting away on 2048

    Blanchardstown here on BT

Still on 1024. Seems there is a problem with a piece of equipment at the exchange.

I mailed BT and they rang back and said Eircom are looking into it.

    Just have to wait.

Anyone else in Blanchardstown in the same boat.?

    Hi,

I'm in the Blanch area..and mysteriously, my upload speed has doubled, at least according to the settings in my router(D-Link G604T) ...and since I don't game online, not much use to me..BUT ..my download speeds have halved!! from 1mb per sec to 512k!! have done the speed test online and this confirmed the speeds.

    What gives?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,377 ✭✭✭Shane O' Malley

Well i would not worry about the download spped measurement to much.

May want to do the test late at night or try downloading from ftp.heanet.ie

    See what happens then.

Then again, could be the faulty equipment in the exchange.

Who knows what Eircom are doing to us :D

    Ah jeez, sorry.

I was just reading the thread and saw that someone had posted about their upgrade and followed suit.
It may all change of course. It could be down to 512 and 64 for me tomorrow.;)

Exact same here. Since yesterday my Dl has been decreasing to a measly 320kps....whilst uploading is creeping towards 200kbps! Not a clue what's happening.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 99 ✭✭FakePlasticMan

    Yep..is very annoying!!

methinks a mail to BT is in order. I've looked thru the threads here and cant find any others bar us who are having this prob.

Is typical tho... i don't really care about the upload..and that works fine..

well... give it another day or so and then get angry...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,362 ✭✭✭Trotter

Still stuck on 1 Meg, so I rang BT. They said basically they'll look into it but they suspect its an eircom problem in that my line will only take 1meg.

BUT.. Ive already had a pal of mine in eircom check the line and its capable of 5meg. BT wouldnt believe me so they're contacting the eircom engineers....

who will then check the same system and tell them its capable of a 5meg connection.

Can you see my frustration growing here?? :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

I have to ring their tech support tomorrow....see where it gets me. Playing Battlefield 2 tonight, lovely pings of about 25 - unfortunately not so lovely downloads about 22kb/s.

    Frustration....

Although I rarely download anything really....so in theory makes no odds....but when I'm getting LESS then a quarter almost of what I should be getting I feel really mad about it!

ps - and BT got back to me via email to confirm I am capable of the full 2megs so....I honestly can't believe for the fuppin SECOND time i've been passed over with upgrades. Am I really that unlucky? :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,228 ✭✭✭Scruff

    From the BT website:
New speeds will become effective for exisiting and new Residential Broadband customers from Monday 23rd January 2006

    will check mine this evening.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 99 ✭✭FakePlasticMan

    Okay,

Not sure if this will help anyone who is having the same prob I described above, but I rang BT's tech support and to cut a long story short the tech suggested I disconnect anything connected into our telephone line, including my broadband router, telephone's, Sky digiboxes etc and leave it for 15 mins.

So..did that ..then re-connected my telephone extension lead that my router is plugged into back into the eircom socket. I didn't plug any of the other stuff in at this stage. and low and behold I am getting the correct download and upload speeds. great.

But, when I plugged all the other leads and adaptors (is like spaghetti junction...not ideal I know) I am back down to 400k.

So, I fiddled around with the connectors, and unplugged one of the phone line double adaptors. We actually had one double adaptor plugged into another one..I know...sounds messy..but it had never caused a prob before.....so I disconnected this one extra adaptor and everything is now fine.

I know this might not be related to any of the other issues, but strangely enough my neighbour is having exactly the same problem as I was but he isn't using any double adaptors. So he's gonna try disconnecting everything from the eircom socket and see if it works for him.

Can't make any sense of thew whole thing myself, and sorry if it sounds garbled, but it's now working at least.

So I'm not really sure now if disconnecting everything from the phone line did anything or if it was just that extra double phone socket adaptor all along. As long as it keeps working...don't care :-)

    Update:

It now appears that if I plug anything else into the main eircom socket apart from the ext. lead that my router is connected to my speed drops back down to 512k again. When I posted earlier hadn't realised that the sky digibox was disconnected in the sitting room. As soon as we re-connected it the speed drops from 1.7Mb/sec to 430k or so.

Also I think Eircom are doing work on the exchange up here in Blanch cos a couple of times the DSL signal just disappeared. Just to add to the confusion.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

I had previously had problems with digi box so plugged it out. Just after plugging out a dual adapter and voila - shot up to 1.2 megs. Still a bit off 2megs but....better :)

Thanks for the advice plastic, didn't even cross my mind as a cause of possible interference.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 99 ✭✭FakePlasticMan

No probs. Glad to help. I don't actually think it's the digibox in particular, cos the same happened when the digital hands free phone was plugged in. Right now have both plugged out until Esat or Eircom sort the problem out. Just have to remember to plug the digibox in when I go to bed..otherwise be getting snotty letter from Sky.

    Cheers

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

My problem still hasn't been solved.

When i disconnect everything else, I get great pings and faster downloads - but can't play online without getting disconnected after 5 minutes! Tried 5 times on different servers on BF2 - lost connection to each one after in and around 5 minutes.

Went back to the old way of slow speeds, played online in two of the same servers for 15 minutes each and no problems whatsoever.

Christ, really getting on my nerves now!

MobileInfantry, FakePlasticMan your lines (like mine) seem to be incapable of handling high speed BB. When you unplug everything but the router from your phone system you reduce the load on your line so that the SnR on your line is good enough to support the new speeds. Of course as soon as you plug them back in the load is increased and your SnR drops like a stone - your router is then incapable of syncing at those new higher speeds so it syncs at a lower speed. Or if your router is like mine and mentally retarded it keeps trying to sync at the high speed meaning you keep losing your connection and suffer constant disconnects. This makes games and streaming impossible. I know, I'm living with it :( €ircon will never bother upgrading the physical network therefore you will never get better speeds until ADSL2+ is rolled out. Even then your speeds will be limited.

Just called bt' technical support, they said my exchange has not been upgraded yet, eircom suspects all exchanges to be upgraded by 6 feb... if i'm still not upgraded by then, i should call tech support and they will try to "troubleshout it".

Seems kinda fishy, since there is nothing on eircom announcement page... gonna try to call eircom.

Sorry it's not a certainty; but based on the information provided that appears to be the case. If your close neighbor can get the full speed then maybe they have less load on their line, better interior wiring or a more capable router (mine is brain damaged and wont sync at a lower speed)
