Sticking point

    My situation at the moment means that I only get to use my weights for a short session three times a week in a garage. I'm only doing four exercises, front squat, deadlift, barbell row and overhead press. While I'm happy with the results I'm getting from them I've got a slight sticking point with the overhead press. From my shoulders to about 1/4 up and 1/2 way to full way up the weight feels fine and I could handle quite a bit more but it's between 1/4 and 1/2 that I'm having a bit of a problem.

    Does anyone know any supplementary exercises I could do to help with this? Unfortunately I don't have a rack available, I just have a barbell, dumbells and weights.

    Handstand press ups/ lower downs. feet against a wall lower yourself down as slow as you can then press back up if you can should help. Also you could try work at 40% of your 1rm and go for dynamic movements.

    try doing heavy partial reps for the portion of the lift you struggle with

    try doing the press with db's for a while, forces you to work harder to keep the weights under control, could give you that little bit more strength when you return to the bar

    Thanks for the advice.

    I'll try some of the handstands, I didn't realise that there'd be much of a carryover between them. Much as I'd love to do them, dynamic exercises are out for the time being unfortunately as I'm a bit constrained space wise.

    Using dumbells is a good idea too, I hadn't even thought of that.

    Hi,

    You can also try Isometrics. Get a door frame and press up as hard as you can! Particularly try pressing at the point you stick at. This should help you break through any plateau's.

    I'm not sure I follow you on that. Is it just a standard door frame or is it a piece of equipment?

    Thanks for the tips guys.

    I tried the handstands and dumbells and it got me through that point.
