Principle behind icy bath immediately after match?

    Hi all,

Maybe somebody could help me with this, what is the principle behind jumping into an icy bath for 30 seconds immediately after a match?

I know that several senior and very successful hurling teams are doing this now, they fill wheely bins with ICE COLD water and the players take turns in jumping into the FREEZING water for 30 seconds immediately after the match.

To me this seems counter-intuitive because all of your muscles will be warm after the match and then you go suddenly to the complete opposite, but apparently trainers suggest it's very good and avoids muscle soreness. Can any of you explain this strange behaviour please?

draws away lactic acid and other waste products from the muscles used in match/training and brings "cleaner" blood woth more oxygen back into muscles when you get out of the ice bath. its just one method of increasing recovery others include massage steam rooms yoga stretching etc.

The players could strip off in a steam room and massage each other, which would probably be very pleasant for them. But instead they'd rather jump into ice water instead. Homophobia maybe.
