If it was your first run in a few years, probably best to do something low impact as well. A light workout on a bike or a cross-trainer should help. If you can't get to the gym, a 30 minute walk should suffice.

    Its freezing out.

Warm up properly and warm down properly.

Stretch before you start and stretch after.

Ive heard saunas are great for stiffness as are a nice hot bath.

    or massage :o

Bath with epsom salts (one cup) my personal solution to stiff muscles.

Hop in the shower after and turn it on as cold as you can stand, then as hot as you can stand, then cold, hot, cold, hot, cold.

I think it's a divisive issue in some fitness circles, but it's worked wonders for me, and I know a lot of high performance athletes who use it (although they use ice baths generally.)

Is the stiffness in muscles not related to a build of some acid(lactic?) which can be broken down a few different ways, I remember reading something here about this, and the advise was to eat certain foods post workout, for the life of me, i cant remember the specifics.

Yea a lot of times the aching is due to a build up of lactic acid when the muscles arent used to doing that much exercise. A home remedy that I use is about a quarter of a teaspoon of baking soda mixed with a little water. It tastes horrible but when I am starting to train again seriously at the start of the season it seems to help me recover faster and have less aching.

Actually the whole lactic acid thing is only a very minor part of why the muscle would be sore. It is now considered to be the actually damage to the muscle during the workout that causes the pain.

As someone here said before, if i am doing heavy squats for 2 reps where is the lactic acid build up, so why are my legs sore????
