    Hi all,

Just wanted to create a new thread to ask you all what your PC Configuration was (i.e. Mobo, Processor, RAM, Graphics Card, HDD, etc) and what your Games Settings were (i.e. Direct X 7 or 9, resolution, average FPS/Ping, etc).

I can't do this myself at the moment as I am currently building a new rig and my IBB connection is fooked (no surprises there then!).

Right lads! I've been awfully quiet lately due to the fact that I sold my old gaming rig (needed cash after buying a motorcycle) and because my crappy IBB connection just kept getting worse ansd worse...
BUT, I missed playing CoD so much that I decided to get a new rig, new monitor and a new broadband connection! Details below:

    New PC:

Blue Metal Chieftec Tower with neon and cool lights (weighs a ton!)
    Antec 600Watt PSU
    DFI LanParty 915P - T12 Chipset MoBo
    Intel P4 3.4Ghz HT 2MB L2 Cache (Socket 775)

    5 x 80mm fans

    New monitor:

    LG L204WT-SF Flat Panel Display - TFT - 20"
    Diagonal Size: 20" - widescreen
Dot Pitch / Pixel Pitch: 0.258 mm
    Max Resolution: 1680 x 1050
Colour support: Up to 16.2 million colors
    Image Aspect Ratio: 16:10
    Response Time: 5 ms
    Image Brightness: 300 cd/m2
    Image Contrast Ratio: 2000:1

    Download Cap: 100Gb

All I'm waiting for now is for an Eircom engineer to get off his @ss and go to my Exchange to connect me to the Magnet network and I'll be back fragging you all! :p

    Quick question guys.

Have never been much into games but OCCASIONALLY I like shooting games for a bit of fun. I mean CoD, rainbow 6 etc, Max Payne.

But I don't own any of these and was wondering can any of these types of games be played on a laptop or is there something about the picture on such screens being slower than a desktop? Heard something like that before...

I wouldn't be fussy. An older version of any of these types of games would be enough for the amount I would play.

Also, how do graphics cards work? I mean, is there a minimum standard card I'd need to be able to play these types of games?

Not sure what I have, but I've 120gb hard driver and 2gb ram. And this is what it says under "Display" on Belarc Advisor (not even sure if it relates to a Graphics Card!):

SiS Mirage 3 Graphics [Display adapter]
    Generic PnP Monitor (23.0"vis)

Sorry if these are daft questions. Really have no clue.

    Thanks.

    Hi kraggy,

What laptop do you have exactly? To play these FPS games you need a proper Graphics Card I think. An onboard card won't be able to handle these types of games...

Basically, to answer your question, we need to know exactly what laptop you have so let us know!

Hey Steffano, thanks for the reply.

It's an Advent Pentium Dual-Core T2310 1.46Ghz. That's all I know besides the other info I mentioned in the other post.

How much would the min graphics card I would need to play these types of games?

Mirage 3 is a disaster performance wise, infinitely slower then the Intel X3100 even - which is known for its lacklustre performance. Check out a review here, 340% slower then a 6200 Turbocache model, which in itself is miles below the minimum requirements for COD4 at low settings! Going by those benchmarks, it performs about the same as a TNT2 from the year 1999. 46fps in Quake III at 1024x768 resolution is shocking, considering the game is almost a decade old.

Even Call of Duty original would struggle on the Mirage 3 on anything other then low-ish settings....I reckon the best you'd get out of it on higher settings would be games like Unreal Tournament, Half Life, that sort of thing. To be honest going from the benchmarks they really dropped the ball with the mirage 3, the mirage 2 was pretty crap but it wasn't anywhere near as crap relatively speaking in relation to other cards of the time and it was better then the intel equivilent. Whereas the intel X3100 is about 7-8 times faster then mirage 3 in some games...I mean 2 frames per second in Quake IV at 1024x768 low settings, how is that even possible for any card made in the past 5-6 years?? :D

There are loads of games you could enjoy on the mirage 3 but anything recent is a big no no. Games from 2000-2001 would be the sweet spot.

This might be a silly question but will MW2 run on a Radeon HD3470?

I'd prefer to use the mouse/keyboard setup on my laptop (Viao FW21L) than use the PS3 controller.

    Thanks,
    Willy
