If you're tired of listening to the same thing, why bother looking for recommendations along the same lines of what you're already listening to? Seems to be a bit of a contradiction.

    Try something completely different:

    Dream Theater
    Opeth
    Green Carnation
    Camel
    The Mahavishnu Orchestra

yeah, bleedin metallers always trying to recruit bored teenagers.

I reckon that if someone says they're "Tired listening to the same music" it would be a good idea to try something new. There's no reason someone who likes Radiohead wouldn't like a bit of Jazz, for example.

That's not what he asked for though, but fire ahead if you want, spread your gospel.

I'd recommend Autolux and Wolf Parade.

Quite frankly, asking for something that sounds like Placebo, just after saying you're tired of the music you're already listening to is a conflicting statement. In the end, it's up to him whether he even investigates any bands mentioned, but it's hardly going to hurt anyone to branch out into some nice Jazz or Rock from the 70's. At the very least, I'd say it's good to have something other than the latest Pop-Rock or Alternative bands recommended.

No gospel at all involved, thanks.

Do you want to tell us anything about those band, anyway? I haven't hear of any of them.

Do you want to tell us anything about those band, anyway? I haven't hear of any of them.

    Surely.

Mahavishnu Orchestra - Jazz Fusion from the 70's, very experimental instrumental sort of stuff.

Camel - 70's Prog Rock band, fairly chilled out stuff, amazing songwriting.

Green Carnation - A current band this one, they did one album which was just a single hour long song, and it was quite possibly one of the most amazing pieces of music I've heard. Other stuff they did was a little more straightforward, sometimes rocking out, sometimes closer to the likes of Radiohead, but always great. This would probably be the closest to what Gary The Great listens to already.

Dream Theater - Metal band, but nothing too heavy at all, very melodic, with a lot of keyboards and harmonies, classically trained vocalist. Excellent musicians, aswell, so I'd definetly recommend them if you're into Muse.

Opeth - Easily the heaviest of the bands I've mentioned, but they do a lot of chilled kind of stuff aswell, which is well worth checking out. I'd recommend the album Damnation, which is all very chilled stuff, amazing music altogether. Great album to just relax with.

    Hope that helps.

I double up on that Wolf Parade reccommendation

    Also:

    Stars
    Black Mountain
    Animal Collective
    The Dears
    Broken Social Scene
    Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
    Death Cab for Cutie

as i said above, Wolf Parade are really awesome and I would highly reccommend them if you're into the Indie scene.

Stars and Death Cab are a bit more towards the pop side of things, Broken Social Scene fit in the middle somewhere which is enjoyable. Both them and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah are coming in February so maybe it's an idea to check them out and see if you like the music cause it's always great to see these kinds of bands live!

    Good luck!

Sorry to say, don't know what Placebo sounds like (tried looking for a sample on their website .. no luck).
so I'll give you these names taking what I can from the thread.
(I back up dream theater, death cab for cutie, and the shins)

-The Postal Service: I found they were something fresh when I first started listening.
http://www.subpop.com/bands/postalservice/downloads.php I really love the song they have there for dl.

-Dispatch: rock + reggae + funk = a cure for ur search for something different. (on myspace.com -listen to "the general")

-Yellowcard: punk rock with a crazy violinist. The man must be insane... and I love him =)
-Acceptance: a bit poppier punk, but eh -they have good beatles covers. (on myspace)
-Pink Spiders.. since I saw them open for these two bands, might as well throw them in. (myspace.com)

-Dave Matthews Band: b/c I love them and it makes me sad when people are unfamiliar with them. So just in case, I'm spreading the Good Word ;)

-heck, wanna take a ride? Check out the Flecktones. all sorts of different stuff there.

-Jack Johnson is mellow and chill, worth a shot.

-if all else fails, listen to some HORRIBLE GARBAGE for a period of time, and when you come back to your old music it will sound like a blessing to your ears :)

    Hope that helps -good luck!

Karl, I listened to a bit of camel and Green Carnation but if one was going to buy one of their albums which would you recomend? I listened to a few songs of both of them and they were deadly, i especially liked camel

Ok thanks for the suggestions so far!

Btw i already love the Pumpkins, Smiths, Cure and Pixies just didnt put them down on my list

This is what i got so far and what i think:

Postal service: Wow am well impressed by this band, can see these becoming a favourite of mine, probly my fav of all the new bands

Wolf Parade: Em i think these will take a bit more listening but i can see it growing on me

Green Carnation: Yep i like, i got that album thats just one song and it is really really enjoyable to listen to, i really like the style.

Dream theater: Havent really listened too much yet so cant give my opinion, same with Broken Social Scene but will give them a listen over the next few days and tell you what i think.

    Thanks people:D

didn't like them that much. A few good songs but not to my taste.

However I would definately recommend Death Cab for a Cutie. Their latest album - plans - was my fav of last year. Absolutely brilliant and anyone I gave it to has loved it.

Mirage would be the best album to start of with as far as Camel goes. For Green Carnation, check out A Blessing In Disguise, then you might want to try Light Of Day, Day Of Darkness, which is the album that consists of a single hour long song.

I'm listening to some more of OAR http://www.ofarevolution.com/ a lot of people like them around here.. have no idea what their fame is in Ireland.

Dashboard is a mellow sound.. a lot of people hate them, a lot of people love them, and others think they're alright.

I think thats all I have for you now :)

Have'nt Seen Editors on any list yet....

Very cool, similar in style to Interpol/Joy Division/Depeche Mode....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 337 ✭✭odhran

Editors are a great band if you're into the whole Interpol sound. I'd go with Ladytron, Bjork and LCD Soundsystem if you're looking to branch into different genres.

Howie Day - Stop all the world now (album) She Says (song)
Jason Mraz - Waiting for my rocket to come (album) Sleep all day (song)
Matt Wertz - Somedays (album) Red Meets Blue (song)

Teitur - Poetry and Aeroplanes (Album) Sleeping with the lights on (song)
Tim Brantely - Bon Voyage (album) Bon Voyage (Song)
