Damage prevention for knees

I used to do a lot of running and never had any problems with my knees. Since then however I've put on quite and but of weight(and my fitness is out the window).

I've started up again but I'm noticing twinges from my kness. Not actual pain but I can feel 'pressure' (for want of a better word) at the top of my knees when I'm running. I can see it getting worse if i'm not careful.

Now ovbiously I need to take things gently while I get the weight off and get things back up to speed. However is there any exercises/stretchs for the knees anyone could recommend to smooth the path?

not too sure bout exercises but what i can say is dont even attempt squats if you have bad knees. get to a physio incase it is something serious.

Most importantly start using a bike instead of running. try doing spinning classes as they are brilliant or start using the cross trainer

When I injured my knee, the physio gave me quad exercises to perform, so that these muscles could take some of the strain off my knees

Had the same problem two years back (I’m long distance running since about 15 years), started then to mix my training with (as before suggested) cycling and swimming. It just takes off the pressure of the joints, balances the body more out and is more fun for most people as it adds variety.

Did you get your knee checked out by a physio therapist or a physical therapist? It might be worth while, as they can give you appropriate exercises.

Otherwise it could be possibly that there is a dysbalance in your addutors/abductors – inside/outside thigh muscles or weak thigh muscles. Appropriate exercise would be working your addutors/abductors – inside/outside thigh muscles in the gym, respectively doing leg extensions in the gym.

Still guessing now, as said before better get it checked out!

as above, see a physio and do less stressful exercises for the knees such as cyclin swimming even fast walking or hill walking to begin with and get the weight off which helps takes stress off the knees. always warm up then do quad streches abductor adductor etc
