A word of warning about this patch.

I installed it as I have a HT enabled processor and setup. I didn't notice any improvement in the game and if anything have experienced a lot of disconnects during map-changes since applying it.

Are you sure the 2 are related? Disconnections are due to connection issues mostly...

Have this proc: Athlon XP 2800+ with sharkoon silent cooling fan. Will this update so anything for me or is there any point downloading?

I assume this *should* benefit me with me X2 processor.

Haven't actuallty ventured online with this game yet. I must. But I'd have to tear meself away from Civ IV - even food has trouble tearing me away from Civ IV.

I got a new PC yesterday with that very same processor! I'll tell you what, after formatting and installing CoD2 I'll do some FPS tests with/without and let you know! ;)

I'm running 1600x1200 no AA no AF everything else high and gettin 40fps smooth ish - drops to 35 in wide open areas (like when you get to the top of the cliff on the first US mission).

Just installed that dual core patch and it says for intel or dual core processors but seems determined about intel so not sure if it will help me. Either way I noticed bugger all difference.

The toledo chip however is the nuts. I've it overclocked to 2.53 on air and for multitasking she's excellent. Best purchase i made in my recent build. Glad I went dual core - got it for 480 euro and its running faster that an X2 4800+ worth 840 euro. happy days. :D

You'll have to wait a bit though Big Nelly... That new PC I got has a crappy nVIDIA GeForce 5600FX (256MB) and I'm only getting 20~30 FPS on CoD2 (yes, on DirectX 7!). My old ATi RADEON 9500 PRO (128MB) can manage 80~90 easily enough! What a sh!t card...

Not to worry though, 9600GS on it's way!!! :D

What resolution do most of you use?

I'm thinkin the reason my FPS are so low (~40) are because I'm running 1600x1200??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,042 ✭✭✭spooky donkey

1024 X 768 in all my games. Im not even sure why I go with that res I have a big monitor.

    I run at 1280 x 1024 in dx 7 and get 100fps+ on average

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,907 ✭✭✭Steffano2002

I always ran CoD @ 1152 x 870 but with this "new" PC I'm building I'll probably go up in res. a bit (1280 x 1024?) cos I now have a 19" monitor (instead of 17"). Depends how many FPS I can get out of the 6800GS really...

ShiverinEskimo: can you do me a favour and lower your res. to 1024 x 768 to see if your FPS actually increases significantly? Thanks! ;)

    Easy with a PGM PC (P4 3.6ghz - 500gb SATA - 2048mb DDR2 - Nvidia 6800gto 256mb...)! :p

PGM PC? I presume that means perfect game machine or something similar :)

It was my bargain of last year from Dell. Check this post.

Yep - it did. 110 fps in houses and bunkers, 90 fps in wide open atop the cliffs in the first yankee mission. :)

    OMG! That's a huge difference! Stick to 1024 x 768 then!
I know resolution affected FPS but that's a massive difference!

Great spec! You should post in the new sticky thread I've created! I think you're ahead of everyone with that rig...

I'm going to play it on 1280x1024 from now on - seems to average out in the high 70's FPS which is just grand - I like a high res, not sure why (prob something to do with my 22" monitor capable of up to 2048x1536) - just means more to me than some of the whistle and bells type effects.

Christ you all have such great PCs... And here's me getting all excited with my "new" Athlon XP 2800+ 2.0GHz with AGP mobo and 19" monitor... Makes me wanna cry :(

Well up until my new PC i was running a PIII 700mhz with a Riva TNT2 with 32mb of ram. So i suppose we all have our day ;)

Just to sicken you I got my board and the proc last year on here with 512MB of memory for 160 quid off a bloke that had only used for 4 months. Been flying since:D

If it makes you feel better the rig below has cost me (over many stages) about 2grand.

But this prob wont make you feel better the 2 grand also got me 2 22" monitors.

    See for yourself

You may have noticed in the last 24hours my CPU speed in my sig has risen from 2.4 to 2.6 - had a day off today so I got stuck into overclocking it. Going well but i'm puttin 1.58 volts into the CPU so my MOSFETS are hot as **** at ~60 degrees under load and my CPU is at 52 degrees with my cooler flat out!!

See this thread for progress and post up your aquamark/3Dmark05 scores too...

Wonderful looking setup you have there ShiverinEskimo! A little jealous so I am... Pity you don't have the 2 exact same monitors! But it's always better than me and my 19" & 17" monitors...

Question for you: how do you calculate Aquamark 3, 3D Mark 03/05? I'd like to see what kind of results I get when I get my 6800S... Furthermore, what would you consider good results? Thank you in advance!

You're all a bunch of crazy OC'ing people on that thread! :p

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2105 - Aquamark
    http://futuremark.com/download/?3dmark05.shtml - 3DMark05 - Broadband Recommended!! 285megs!!

download and run both of these - always reboot and close everything you can before running 1 then reboot and run the other - especially clear out your system tray as much as poss.

Its the best way of seeing exactly how your machine compares to others.

In terms of good and bad results - the best think to do is upload your 3dMark score (option come up when you get your score) and then click compare results on the left of the web page and enter your machine's spec. Find the same speed cpu, amount of mem and importantly the same clock speeds for your gfx card and look at the scores and you'll know whether your machine is in good shape or not. Its fiddly but can be rewardign when you tweak thngs and see improvements. My first 3Dmark05 score was 6988 - after 3 months of updating drivers and overclocking (and makign sure I had as few processes running as poss) i've risen to 7301 which is a huge jump for 3dMark.

I have never OC'ed anything in my life and this post confused (and frightened) me a bit... :( Yes, I am an over-clocking n00b! I admit it! ;)

Things I don't even know how to do or check: "clear out your system tray", "the same clock speeds for your gfx card", "making sure I had as few processes running as poss"...

I guess I'm going to have to start browsing over-clocking websites...

Let me tell you - until october '05 i had been using a PIII 500MHz. I'm totally new to this overclocking malarky. But its easy enough when you get familiar with what setting changes what.

In terms of running a few benchmarks - thats the easy part. Your system tray is all those icons beside your clock in windows - each of those is a constant running process which you should close (the ones you can) before you run benchmarks cos they will affect your performance - right click on each icon to find the exit or close options.

When you upload your scores 3DMark05 will take a note of your hardware including the speed at which each component runs. your CPU for example will read 2000MHz or similar as per your spec. Your graphics card also has processor which has its own clock setting - my graphics card's core clock speed is set to 437MHz - dunno what your 6800GS might be. Either way 3DMark will record what it is and upload it - when you're comparing your results online you'll be asked for what spec to compare to - you want to get other results from other users with machines similar to yours so find another score with specs matching 2GHz athlons and whatever 3DMark clocks your graphics card to.

The making sure you have as few processes running as poss is a follow on from the system tray idea - just close all programs you don't need so the system resources are freed up as much as possible for 3DMark and Aquamark to use - this will improve your scores.

Also, make sure you have the latest nVidia drivers:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_81.98.html - this is prob the one you need if you're running Windows XP. Just download and open the file and then reboot when it asks you to.

Come back if you have more questions.
