    Hey all,
Bought a 21 inch TV with built in DVD player in Dunnes for e210. Wow what a bargain I thought. I went home, plugged it in and stuck on a DVD. After ten mins, the bloody thing blew up! It made a massive bang, the picture went and sparks came out of the telly! Now I can't find my BLOODY receipt!!

I'm sorry but i couldn't help but laugh at that!

    .... but ouch...

Just be thankful no-one was hurt.... and Dunnes ARE a shower of robbing bastards!

    How ?

The TV blew up. It does happen. The price was good. The OP hasn't gone back to Dunnes yet so so far they haven't done anything in this case to deserve abuse.

Lets wait and see what happens before we start sharpening our pitchforks let alone lighting the flaming torches and piling on the haycarts for the storming of Cornelscourt....

Parsi, you work for them or something?! :D

Bought two things from Dunnes - both of them stopped working (and were generally crap) after little or no use.

  • Site Banned Posts: 5,904 ✭✭✭parsi

Nope ! Just think we should see how this pans out...

I bought three Hyundai DVD players from them in January 04 and they are excellent machines.

Nothing wrong with dunnes its the manufacturer of the tv. Sounds like a dodgy resistor or something. Did any smoke come out?

never buy something like that cheap.its only 20-30 euro more if u buy from dixons etc and u will get a better brand.thats what happens when u buy cheap.

Unsubstantiated nonsense .. just because you had a bad experience with cheap-as-crap goods, doesn't mean Dunnes are robbing you. You can bring it back for repair/new one, at their additional expense, so it's actually the opposite!!

Is this even allowed. The poster hasn't given Dunnes any chance of resolving his problem.

I love it, you buy a telly dont keep the reciept and its dunnes fault. If you had bought it in dixons it would be their fault aswell I suppose. Keep the reciept in the future it is your guarantee afterall. The thing your missing is dixons etc wont deal with you without a reciept but dunnes depending on the humour of the manager might.

I thought we would have all been past the because its cheap its rubbish attitude when it comes to tellys at this stage considering we all know half the good ones are just rebranded cheap ones and the rest break just as often as the cheap ones.

How can they tell its still in warranty, or better still, that you even bought it there (and not from the back of a lorry) ??

Alot of places (DID, Power City, Dixons/Currys etc) will take your name and address when your buying the thing, so it's easy to look up the recipt and get the details.

I still stand by what i said when Dunnes/Lidl/Aldi started selling electronics. Don't put anything with a plug in the same trolley as your apples and oranges.

Power supplies blow. Not very often but it does happen a bit.

    Theres no big deal...

I think everybody should calm down a bit and lose the self righteous attitudes. The guy's tv EXPLODED! If this was America there would be a legal case and damages for 'mental anguish' would probably be awarded.

He's more than entitled to his opinion on Dunnes......and a new tv.

Thats the power supply. Or whatever its called in a TV. I've seen new PC's do the same thing.

    not a bargain alert ...

stuff breaks ... did you bang it on the way home ? / you've given them no chance to redeem themselves ...

go in tell them what happened and if your new one blows up again then start complaining ...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 422 ✭✭PADDYPOKER

    How old is it?
Dunnes will give you a replacement/refund no doubt about that assuming it's not a few years old.
The reason people need receipts is to stop the robbers bringing
them back to get cash refunds.
Bit surprised you lost the receipt already because that is in effect your warranty.
If you ring or go into them and explain the situation, I'm sure they will sort you out.
Dunnes are 10 times better then Dixons who are the worst when it comes to returning faulty goods. They just don't want to know.

sorry that's complete crap, I've bought electronic stuff in each and never had a problem. My mate bought a brillant pc from Aldi 3 years ago for nothing compared to what similar spec machines were going for at the time and it still beats the pants off any of the crap Dixons/PCWorld will try and fob off on you.
As to taking your name and address can't say I've ever experienced that in Dixons or Powercity, but in general I buy on laser or visa so it's a very simple matter of showing them your statement or simply your card number. If you've bought for cash and you have lost your receipt well then it's really just tough, no one can plead ignorance as in I didn't know I needed that! Having said that out of all the places listed here I would think Dunnes would be the most likely to give a refund, they've done it for me in the past minus receipt. Lidl & Aldi forget about it, but the same can be said for any of the brands you've listed, the return policies of the major stores imo suck big time, even with a receipt (that's another story for another time though ;) )

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,632 ✭✭✭✭okidoki987

I think the title should be changed to

Beware (insert make of TV here) TV's!

It's grossly unfair to post comments about Dunnes as they only sold you the TV and not made it. I would also have waited until you found out what they said whene you tell them what happened.
The same could have happened to a TV bought in DID, ARNOTTS, POWER CITY etc

not a nice thing to happen granted, but until he goes back for a refund you could hardly call it robbery! As has already been said a number of times, why not actually wait until he does that before the wild accusations?

    Or "beware, keep your receipts!"

If it is an oddball brand dunnes are probably the only ones selling it, it is probably only on sale a few months so it should be obvious that you bought it there within the last year. I would get an older woman to bring it back if you can, it sickens me to see the good treatment they get!

I bought an expenvcive Thomson 32" pure flat 100hz TV from Dixons 14mth later it goes wallop, the tube is faulty and takes 3min to warm up and display a picture, would cost 355euro to replace and fit.
The brand or shop has noting to do with it,...

The same could happen to any tv really, well any crt tv anyway. I got a tv dvdcombo in supervalue a year ago and it works fine and seems to have the best tuner of all the tvs in the house.
You just had a bit of bad luck and if it happened me id have to laugh.

You havent given the brand name!, people are just saying to stop bashing Dunnes, you could have bought it in peats or anywhere, I would blame/warn against the brand before the seller. They may be on sale elsewhere so please give the name.
Its like saying "dont buy chocolate in dunnes, I got a bar there and it didnt taste nice"

Really? I'll never shop there again so! I heard a rumour that they also sell wine that isn't nice.

TVs do explode sometimes, even brand new ones. You were unlucky.
However, you might have a problem getting a refund or replacement out of Dunnes if you don't have a receipt. I brought back a set of broken PC speakers recently without a receipt and they just pointed at a photocopied notice on the wall : "no refund or exchange on electronics items without receipt". At first they were adamant, but eventually, after a lot of arguing, they caved in and exchanged them. So rubadub is right, "beware, keep your receipts!"

Good luck. AFAIK you're entitled to a repair even without a receipt, although you might have to fight with them to get it done. You could post in consumer issues for more advice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,386 ✭✭✭✭rubadub

The dishonest amongst you could buy another TV (or whatever it is that has broken), keep the reciept this time and bring back the broken one. Of course you are paying full price for both and may not need 2 of them, but you could give it as a present to somebody, it may be better than buying a new one again for the same price and ditching the old one.
It is not really that dishonest anyway, it did break within warranty. If either of the 2 new tellys go the one receipt will still cover it.

    check out oasis.gov.ie.
You don't need a reciept for a faulty good.
Dunes as a supplier have serials of the TV units they got and would easily be able to tell if you lying or not.

Bring the TV back and they'll have to repair/replace or offer a full refund. Its EU LAW. Best of luck. THanks for the warning.

I have never heard this before. Many electrical good do not have a serial number, and I would think many shops do not keep track of them. How can you prove it is within warranty.
I hope it is true though.

    For future reference:

there is also an advantage in paying with a credit card as that
    can easily be checked....

    Dawn

Have you taken the tv back to Dunnes yet.... and if so what was the response?
    ....if not, why not???

I would have to agree with the other posters here, you can't really slate them until you know how they respond to the returned tv.

Hey sorry, the brand of the TV is "Crown" although I did buy a Crown DVD player before and it was grand. Haven't yet returned the TV as I'm waiting on someone strong (ie boyf) to come carry it for me! Will return it soon though

    From oasis.gov.ie:

I returned a pair of shoes that were faulty but I have lost my receipt. What can I do?

Retailers are entitled to ask for some proof of purchase, but a receipt is only one type of proof. Other examples are cheque stubs and credit card statements. Unless you can prove you purchased the item, the retailer is not obliged to give you a replacement or a refund.

Sorry but I too have to agree with most of the posts here. Its not really Dunnes fault but I accept that you were warning people of the problem with the TV rather than the store.

Going by some of these posts You might want to type slower for some people to understand this :D

Interesting the feelings about Dunnes, have to say I do share them, never ever had problems returning stuff that was too small , to big (i wish) or broken.

Tbh Dunnes aren't a bad crowd at all compaired to the others operating in the same market.

One TV died once. Wow I can see a pattern here.

It so common that no one else has posted about a Crown TV dying. One way to make goods cheaper is to not do a full burn-in test. It's cheaper to swap out them after customers do a burn in test than take the time and space to do it in the factory. And even if they could do a full 100% burn-in test and even if you would still buy the more expensive TV, you would still get a few that died after delivery. So after sales service is important.

What matters most is if Dunnes replace it or not.

If the replacement fails or other people have the same problem then it might indicate a quality problem.

Look up terms like MBTF and bathtub curve, and bad batch ( eg: overheating controllers on quantum fireballs - more than 50% failures over four years )

Remember that computer manufacturers used to have a failure rate of about 7%
