Just wondering what the general concensus is on wearing lifing belts to support the back. I hear two very different views on it in the gym- some say they really help to keep your back straight, others say they prevent the back from dveloping strength as they compensate so much. I tend not to use them but my lifts are getting pretty heavy and if I should be wearing one I kinda want to know :o

    What do y'all think??!?

I never use a belt. Two reasons.

    1) If you can't like a weight with good form and no help, you shouldn't be lifting.

    2) A recent study tested the amount of stress on the lower back during squats and deadlifts with a belt and without a belt. Wearing a belt actually placed MORE stress on the lower back area.

Think about it, if you cinch on a belt, you are pulling tight the mucles and lower back area placing it under tension. Then you are lifting with a primary area of tension ANYWAY being on that area.

Another study also found that most MUSCLE strains in the lower back occur in people who use belts.

I suggest no belt and decent form.

If Magnus Ver Magnuss can no-no-no ( no belt, no wraps, no spotter) squat 270kilo's for reps, i think we should be alright with correct form!!!

Dragon has summed that up nicely.

    Form is king.

Totally agree - would only use it for one rep and even then its very rare
