The Sky By Broadband service is now available for downloading. It took me about 5 minutes.

    Looks pretty cool.

I don't subscribe to Sky Sports, but there are plenty of movies available.

downloading now. wonder what kind of sporting highlights they offer

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,815 ✭✭✭Charlie

Downloaded it myself. I am downloading spiderman 2 as we speak. The sports clips are not as appealing as the movies but there is an impressive database of clips. I wonder though when we'll recieve the email notifying us that the service is up and runnnng. I just found out about it from seeing the news on another forum. If the movies are good quality, I think it will prove to be a decent service.

    Hi,

I have downloaded it fine and the icon is there on the desktop but when trying to run it I get "Sky Broadband needs an internet conection. Please connect to the internet and try again"

I have a 3mb wireless line from NTL working fine. Would it be a problem as it is going through a router ? Any ideas how to update it ?

Great to download a few movies onto your laptop if you're travelling.

Except you can run it from both your laptop and your PC :(

Also when i exited the application to play BF2 the damn thing is still downloading the movie in the background yet it is shutdown.
Obviously the 'x' button doesnt kill the services

Are you running ad-subtract or other filtering software.
I got that message too and killing ad-subtract worked

I'm downloading Welcome to the Jungle (don't ask). It takes a while doesn't it?
I guess the trick would be to download your movies overnight for later viewing.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

    hmmmmmmmmm

trying to install and it is giving me the error message in the attachment. i have
rebooted and downloaded it again. any ideas?

What size are films etc? Can you save the movies for viewing later? I wonder if this would be legal at my place of employment? :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

If sky put a USB/Firewire/Ethernet/Wifi on their boxes for PC it would make more sense for distributing movies than the Broadband.

I think this is a backward step.

Ever sincve I installed Sky By Broadband, my system has been fooked from.

KService.exe is taking 99% CPU and 2GB Paging file swap space, every time I start up the program.

My whole system has slowed to a crawl.

I have been trying to register all evening and keep getting server timeouts or the site just hanging. I guess their server is just overloaded with people trying to sign up and downloading stuff. Anyone else experiencing this?

Yes. I rebooted and no joy. I had previously received an error during the install (Error 1722). Someone on the DigitalSpy board suggested a fix for this which involved installing the Kontiki application from http://www.kontiki.com/ After installing this the SkyByBroadband install completed sucessfully but now it fails when launching the SkyByBroadband app.

I keep getting a problem where microsoft.net framework won't install because of some kind of debugging problem. Anyone else had this problem or have any idea how to fix it?

I installed it over a week ago and I am very happy with it, I can now watch stuff wile in the office "working away"!!

File size is also really good at about 800-1GB per movie and they work in full sround sound, only wish the resolution was a little higher as when I make it full screen it takes away from the sharpness and definition a little I think.

Recommended to anyone with Sky and broadband who spends more time at the PC desk than in front of the TV like I do.

    what joy!

ah that name rings a bell, i discovered it in the services and was wondering what it was for, atleast i know now before i would of deleted it.

yeah i downloaded identity in 20mins and was watching it, i do find i have to use media player by itself as the sky by broadband program just shows up a green picture.
Never the less, its grand for the laptop, the car journey was very quick while watching it, but like you say i watched it to the tv and there is a more noticeable picture loss, but sure i cant complain as i use it more on the laptop.

I saw that app in my startup too, and I removed it! Mind you, I didnt try loading SbBB since. Must try laters.

Can you change a process' priority in Windows? Might give the CPU a break.

Nah I uninstalled SBB but the KService remained. I had to manually remove it.

I think I tried lowering the priority but it failed. I might try to install it later and see how it goes.

Too busy setting up my Media PC at the moment

I have tried this, I only have the Sky Sports package but when I ever try to open the Sky Sports channel I get error no. 222, anybody got any ideas what is wrong?
Also is it a p2p type application or are they direct downloads, if it is p2p it is probably not going to work behind the DCU firewall:mad:

This is now working foe me, I tried the other day and it told me that I had to update my WMP so that it could play back DRM videos. The only thing wrong with it at the minute is that it will not let me download any of the sports clips but it will let me play them, not sure why it is doing this, I presume its just a bug in their software.

[edit] what you proposed was in fact the same as theft. you pay for Sky Sports so you get Sky Sports content, if you want the Sky Movies content then technically you would need to pay for Sky Movies. as such asking what you asked is not allowed[/edit]

Agreed Monk, however, it still wouldn't have worked, I think.
Both users for the one account have to be accessed from the same computer.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

having not tried my account on 2 pc's i wont comment on whether it would have worked or not. but if it works it is theft so no more talk about it :)

Fair enough Monk, I didn't actually look at it like that.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 56 ✭✭OsamaBinLaden

the only problem i have with it is that it doesn't show you the progress of the movie being downloaded.
i opened up the LAN status box and the d/l speed seems to vary from 20-50kb/s. been dowloading a movie for about three hours now. just checked. it's done. i recommend the vlc media player for playback.

Can anybody help my out on this error, I'm installing the sky by broadband, everything seems to go ok untill after i have to reboot, it continues then i get this error message... and idea on this error. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/eekaabadger/images/error.JPG

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 469 ✭✭thetourist

found this on the web today - might explain some of the wierdness mentioned in this thread reguarding kontiki ........ i think it's pretty sneaky myself and will promptly remove sky by broadband ... i mean if you want to subscribe to it that's your own say but people should be at least told about it, not suckered into it

    http://hintofsarcasm.com/2006/01/12/sky-by-broadband/

please post it anywhere you can -- so people can have free choice

also be aware ... ( surprise surprise )
My huge concern is that even after unistalling the program the P2P part of the software remains installed on your pc, and will continue sending packets of data across your network. I found 2 processes running in the Task Manager KHost.exe and KService.exe, and I have to say that although I was able to get rid of them on a perminant basis, most pc users would have no idea how to do it, and probably wouldn’t realise that their internet connection was still being used anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,231 ✭✭✭✭Sparky

yeah i found this, today, i passed it by recently untill i had a good look at the stats and heres the shocker.

Kservice and Khost has over a total of 3 days this weekend: uploaded 25.9GB of data to a load of NTL customers and openworld customers and even sky are having a snoop around. all skys IPs start with 193.195.115.*

So when ever i use Sky by BB, after i cancel the Khost and Kservice services. Aswell as moving any movies to a Videos folder on the desktop and telling Sky By BB to delete them, hence it thinks its deleted but the movies arnt.

Robbing bastards, using all my 1mb upload, i was wondering why all the pcs were slow

When I try to install Sky by Broadband I get error message saying.

Error:1722 There is a problem with this Windows installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Please contact your support personnel or package vendor.

Has anyone had this problem or have any idea what it means, I can't really be bothered to ring Sky customer support don't fancy 2 hour long phone call.
