    1) When i turn it on i hear what i can only describe as a whir,it reminds me slightly of a dodgy pc booting up.
    2) If i continously fast forward/choose different songs in quick succession i hear a clunk(again bad pc memories!)
    3) There's a 3 second wait before a song plays, the timer is on the screen during the wait
    4) I converted a few episodes of family guy, scrubs, american dad and american dad/some episodes of scrubs froze

I only bought this on Thursday and i'm wondering am i paranoid,is this all to be expected, should i return it for a new one? i bought it in peats and while its a new product and what not i know how peats are!

The noises you hear are just the hard drive spinning etc. As for the video freezing, I'd try playing the same file on my PC and see does it freeze then. May have been an error during encoding.

You know how Peat's are? I think you'll find we're actually fairly decent and if you do have a problem we'll look after you. You AIN'T going to be left high and dry. You don't stay in business by f*cking your customers over.

Hmnn we've been open for months and months on a sunday. Originally from 2-6pm and now from 1-5pm. Not sure when you must have went.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,100 ✭✭✭muckwarrior

Maybe it was before 2pm. Oh and your website doesn't mention anything about sunday opening either.

Do you haggling here Tusky:D Eo, how do haggles go down in Peats?

Ehhh Ireland isn't a culture of hagglers!!! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

I'll change that, Tusky, don't go down without a fight, at least ask for a free case or something, even a scart lead or something totally irrelevant to the iAudio. A roll of till receipt paper or sumthin, anything:D

By the way, Tusky, get Eo to buy it, he'll get a staff discount and you can split the savings between you:)

What's your cheapest DVD recorder boss? Any in the €150 range? Major Thread hijacking here but I think the problems described are normal? :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,618 ✭✭✭Civilian_Target

I have an X5L. I can't even hear the hard drive and have had no freezing problems. Never used it for video.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,039 ✭✭✭✭Kintarō Hattori

Hmnn I dunno what our cheapest DVD-Recorder is as the shop is essentially split into two parts, one for Hi-Fi and one for Computers. Guess which part I'm in?! Heh.

BTW - I just bought myself an i-Audio A2-30GB, wow what a piece of kit. I'm very impressed with it. I knew Cowon made good stuff, but I can't fault it at all!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,088 ✭✭✭Ruskie4Rent

The iAudio x5 has added to my christmas dillema.
It's now between a zen vision:m, the video ipod, or the iaudio.
I can't get the creative one if it's not out before christmas, and i'm don't like the idea of the ipod not playing half my music or video files and everyone hates it for some reason. Why is that?, cos i'll get it if your reasons aren't valid.

So is the cowon a good alternative? Why?
What's the picture like? and how well does it organise your music?

I need someone to make my mind up for me.

    I have a question too!
I've seen on various sites the following two items. A Cowon IAudio X5 and a Cowon IAudio X5L. Are these the same thing or is there a difference, please someone help as I'm pretty sure I'm gonna get one but I need to clear this little thing up first!
    Cheers

The L is for longer life battery. The X5 battery life is about 14 or 15 hrs whilst the X5L's battery life is about 35 or 36 hrs. Well worth getting the X5L if you can. That's the only difference as far as I know.

So by the sounds of it the L is the better more expensive model. Thats weird cause on EBay the cheapest one on there right now is the L but theres still about 5 hours to go on auction.

Thanks for clearing that up btw

I never meant that peats wouldn't fix/replace/refund just i've found the service by staff to be kinda dodgy.

Ugh i flicked back to a mp3 and heard a clunk, the timer is on the screen for the last 15 minutes with only the hold button showing any sign of responce. I'll be bringing it back tomorrow hopefully a replacement,it's a lovely piece of kit otherwise and the earphones are top notch

There is also a difference of 4mm in size between the two, doesn't sound like much but it is noticeable when you hold the two. There are actually two batteries in the X5L. 20 euro price diff between X5 & X5L in both 20 & 30GB models so its really down to whether you want a slim unit or a serious battery life.

eo980, make sure to download the firmware upgrade for the A2, lots of improvements made to an already excellent PMP.

To the OP, it would be normal to hear the HD booting but it should be pretty quiet. The clunk doesn't sound healthy! Peats will replace that no problem, most big retailers swap them and feck them back at their supplier :)

No they're not, they're crap. Just like virtually every other set of headphones distributed with a DAP.
As for the peats thing, I had a few problems with them a few years ago. Was buying a lot of stock with them at the time and on average 4 out of 5 items I bought were faulty. I got them all replaced of course, but I was starting to worry that they'd think I was taking the piss or something bringing back items so often. Staff are usually pretty knowledgable and helpfull in my experience.

Really?, thats not what I heard, I read they were the first ones to give decent earphones as a feature. And that either iaudio or cowon were earphone specialists. I am not saying they are like €200 earphones but would be comparable to say fontopias. I would prefer to be able to buy a DAP without them though.

Well i've got a pretty cheap set of sonys (< €30) and they sounded way better than the stock ones.

What did you do with your H3XX Muck?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,088 ✭✭✭Ruskie4Rent

So should I bother with waiting to see if I can get a zen vision:m before christmas or will I just get it over with and get an iAudioX5?

Oh still have it. The x5 wasn't mine. Had to buy it for my cousin, so I played around with it for a few days while i had it.

Personally I'd just go with the X5 due to it's interface, drag and drop ability etc. I don't like creatives navigation system. You may love it, muckwarrior does, but I don't. I'd be very happy choosing the X5 now though.

    Muck, ah, lucky cousin:)

    .

I got the 30GB X5L and thought the earphones supplied in the box far outclassed any set I'd used before.

There's nothing I've seen so far that's produced by Cowon that isn't top notch, and that includes their flash MP3 players.

I think though, if you're spending so much on an mp3 player, you should spend a sufficient amount on a good set of earphones too, Fontopias at least (€50) but if you're spending that you may as well spend an extra €30 or so and get Shure E2's so I'd actually prefer if they didn't bother with including earphones, although that would be crap for some people, most people. You can't win:rolleyes:

The timer stayed on the screen for the night,i brought it back and got a replacement. The problem happened to the replacement just a few minutes ago,i'm well annoyed at it happening i'll go up and see if i can sort out a refund. I really wanted an iaudio but ugh it happening a third time no thanks!

As you say, the X5L has twice the battery life, but it's a lot thicker, even than is suggested in the specs, the maximum thickness is increased by 4mm (which is an extra third thicker than the normal x5) but this runs right the way to the bottom of the unit in the X5L, instead of it simply being thicker at the screen part like the X5. Obviously, this also makes it a good bit heavier too.

    (Edited for spelling)

?!! The headphones that came with my X5L (earbuds with silver sticky-outy-things) are absolutley shocking. Fortunately, I had a set of Sennheiser MX400s sitting about to replace them with :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,039 ✭✭✭✭Kintarō Hattori

    Hey Felixdhc,

Will do. I have to say I'm very impressed by it. I fairly notice the difference in weight between that and my old H140- but it's well worth it for all the additional features. Makes the train jouney's go a lot quicker.

In fairness folks if you are spending so much money on an MP3 player it is well worth it to go out and buy a GOOD set of earphones. The ones that come with the players are typically awful to average. By using a cheap set of earphones you are missing out on the whole point of an MP3 player. It's for listening to music so you should invest. You'll hear a WORLD of differnce. I went a bit mad about two years ago and bought a set of Sennheiser HD212 Pro's - big, but comfy and amazing sound.

All the staff or just some? If your not happy with the service someone gave you, you can always look to be served by somene else. I'm not flaming, just merely saying! :D

The player should be cheaper so people can then buy their own, seems very mixed opinions on the iaudio ones, it is not just quality people disagree on it is the style, i.e. earbuds, canals, giant earmuff ones.
But still there is no pleasing some people, me included, I think dvd players that come with no scart are scabby, yet if I wanted to use a quality lead I would be cursing them for having to pay for something I don't want! :v:
Same with nokia phones, I have about 8 chargers in my house.

Finally got the iaudio x5. Can't use it untill sunday but I can wait till then. I already have myself some decent headphones so no worries there.

Will this thing show movies on my TV through an AV connecter?

Shame. I can see how you're too pissed off to get another one. Very unlucky to get two dodgy ones in a row.

iAudio have a very small failure rate and it really is very unlucky to get two in a row.

No. For that, you'll want a Cowon A2.

    I know I do!

Balls! That'll make watching movies a bit less of an exciting feature. And yes I had a look at the A2 before I got the iaudio and it is foopin cool, but a bit out of my price range.
I'm still happy with the iaudio though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

You'll probably find you'll end up using the movie feature very little anyway, even if it was able to connect to a tv. I wouldn't worry about it:)

So did anyone get an iaudio x5(l) for christmas? if so any reports of faults,i plan on bringing mine back in the next day or two

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,618 ✭✭✭Civilian_Target

I did. So far, it works, and I haven't recharged it yet. Firmware's crap though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,088 ✭✭✭Ruskie4Rent

I like mine alot and there's no signs of any faults.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,609 ✭✭✭comet

I got the x5 60GB, same size as the the x5l. I'm very happy with it, everything I expected it to be. Yeah you can hear the hard disk spin a bit and there are delays sometimes when it reads from disk but these are very minor and only to be expected.
I got it for music but I have tried out a few comedies on it and they look pretty decent on it. I followed the method thats a sticky on iaudiophile.net for ripping and converting from DVD, it worked very well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,618 ✭✭✭Civilian_Target

No - they're not to be expected. My previous MP3 player didn't suffer from this - this is the difference between good firmware and Korean firmware :/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,609 ✭✭✭comet

so what was your previous player?
