If your an Irish model look away now as this is a total rant about you! It is so embarrasing and sexists how on the front of our national newspapers everyday we have an Irish model promoting some sort of product. This is so degrading for us women that the editors of the Irish Indepent etc think the Irish public want this sort of pathetic eye candy to greet them every morning as we read the news.
It's the same 10 models all the time who all look exactly the same-fake tanned to the nines and dont get me started on glenda gleesons eyebrows. Surely,Irish companies have better ways to promote their products then a scantily dressed roberta rowatt on the front of the evening herald?

Its not jealousy. The Irish Independent, the largest selling paper in Ireland every day, which i presume is sold to an equal measure of men and women, everyday without fail has a photograph of a scantily clad female. Why cant us girls have one of a scantily clad man?surely that'd be fair?

yes but women actually prefer to look at other women as opposed to men. Look in any womens mag and the amount of times an attractive man is shown is dwarfed by the pictures of women.

I'd say more guys buy it than girls tbh.

It'd stop the guys buying it and that would be a major mistake for the Independent to make.

Oh and yes, I, as a member of the public, want to be greeted every day with eye candy as I read the news.

Now, try to do something about that jealousy.

If you don't like it, don't buy it. If their circulation numbers go down, they won't be able to sell advertising space. There are plenty of other newspapers on the market!

I'd be a bit more upset at the pics on the front of the Saturday Sport than the Indo, tbh!

Her eyebrows wreck my head! I mean, she's a model, don't they have makeup artists to actually do a good job of plucking eyebrows? In all honesty though I think Glenda Gilson is mannish - there are far more attractive models they could use for promoting everything

Well in fairness, you wouldn't really be buying the Indo for their news coverage, so you might as well have a decent looking woman on the front of it.

i watched an ad on the tv the other night and it had some naked dude in it. his arse was quite clearly visible. putting a woman in the same position would not be allowed.

i'm afraid i have to agree with the birds on this one. i just don't see the buzz with having these 'irish models' promoting something. it just doesn't make any sense to me.

i don't particularly want to looks at GG's face everyday.

BAH welcome to the national newspaper of a small country.

The Irish Independent does nothing but print the pictures that the PR companies set up photocalls for. Glenda Gilson gets in the papers a lot, QED lets hire her from (I assume) Assets Model Agency for this photocall, prop our product up on or around her, invite the press snappers and our own snapper and issue the pics with a press release.

Glenda gets paid, Assets (I'm assuming it's Assets) get's their cut, your PR client is happy coz their product is in the paper, you get your retainer, the Indo gets a pretty girl on their front page.

What part of this process is causing you difficulty? It's nothing to do with the demands of the public. The public couldn't give a sh1te if they never saw Glenda G again in their lives.

    Goodness me.

There's this thing about advertising.... pretty women sell stuff better than uggers or, dare I say it, "regular" women. I'm a woman, and I don't think it is either embarrassing or sexist if a good looking woman with a decent rack wants to earn some cash by flaunting her wares in a newspaper. I'm not shocked or appalled to see a woman in a bikini selling the latest cheap rate phone calls or whatever. Fair play to her. There are worse ways you can earn cash. I work in a bloody call centre, ffs.
Also.. I'm sure the Independent don't publish their paper every day with the notion "We must insert a picture of a semi-naked model or we won't sell a single paper." There are "other" ways to promote your company yes, but if you were to delve deeper, you would find that, generally speaking, these companies use MANY, MANY different ways to promote their stuff. You'll find they don't rely solely on the use of titillation to sell their crap.

With all due respect this presumption is wrong the indo is bought prodomnetly by men and blue shirts, and althougth Glenda G, Is very scary loooking there are other reasons for her constant exsposure in the Indo aside from then Maggs booking her for every modeling job on the go.

Ah , yes - this gets on my tits too. Every day. And as for those eyebrows, jeez, it must be the 'im constantly surprised' look. I hear peter Marks can do it for any girl for a fee.
But anyhow, it bugs me too. The same ones all the time. Promoting all sorts of sh1te. It never used to happen, so why now??

Is she not related to someone in the indo? And that's why she gets in it so much?

I think that magazine they've on sunday is worse. Who the hell give's a **** about Irish models lives? Or the new 'it girls' from belfast a few weeks ago. Such bull****. Just an excuse to print some pictures to replace the 03 team. The indo is fast developing into a rag paper.

Every time something like this comes up it really confuses me. I've thought this through many times over and I can't see how it could possibly be degrading to women, if anything it's testament to the power women have over men.

On the other hand, I could see how it would be degrading to men. It means the marketers think we're all a bunch of slobbering idiots who are going to buy a newspaper, or whatever product, because of a picture of a good looking girls in a mini-skirt.

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 10,446 Mod ✭✭✭✭xzanti

Yes being made up and clothed in nice gear for the day to have your photo taken and have people lick your a*rs everywhere you go... And then get paid a small fortune for it.... Very degrading

    ???

  • Moderators, Regional North East Moderators Posts: 12,739 Mod ✭✭✭✭cournioni

What a stupid thread. Getting paid good money for modelling clothes or your body is something a woman should be proud of. None of them are forced into any of it.

This reminds me of the photo of the ugly woman protesting outside a hooters in the states witha poster saying "This is sexist" or something, and behind her you see 4 hooters girls walking toward her with drinks. The face on her is brilliant!

If anyone can find that photo I will give them 10p

Ok i must defend myself.Perhaps I didnt explain myself properly yesterday. You see no other country in the world has these sort of pr stunts on there papers day in day out. Actually if you read any of the interviews from Irish models they say that the work that they do is degrading too. Its not fashon modelling, its not page 3 stuff so for the likes of the assests models who consider themselves proper models, these sort of pr jobs day day in and out out is degrading for them. Pick up any english paper and you will not see a half pretty girl standing in hyde park dressed in a bikini for a vodafone summer special. I have absolutely no problem with the sun and page 3 girls. They are proffesional models who arent promoting any company. However, on moving back to Irealnd i couldnt believe on the front of our national papers so called broadsheet papers everyday(its even creeping into the times) there are these cheap publicity stunts. What does this reflect on us as a nation that editors of these daily nationals think the men an us women want to see a picture like this. Surely the irish independent and times photographers are paid to do a decent job and get intresting pictures of dthe country instead of trotting down to stephens green for the same worn out picture of andre roche with another product to flaunt.

I wouldnt consider myself a feminist, far from it. I have huge respect for Katie Price and glamour models who work hard to get where they are. Even though it is strange how these so called irish 'models' cant get work anywhere else in the world except Dublin...and glenda gleeson in particular has tried so hard to break into british modelling. However, the fact is they are too ordinary and cheap looking to get work anywhere else. The have nothing special or stunning about themselves and i just think there is far more attractive girls in Ireland than those same ex miss Irelands that are always on the front of the Herald.
