    Where are you living?
I've got cousins in Luton... I wonder can they see it from there... Hemel Hempstead looks pretty close on the map to Luton.
Damn that's a whole lotta smoke

its about 10 miles from luton, you can see the flames from 1 mile way, 60-100ft. the cloud is growing over the west-side of our village, going south-east it seems. everyones just so shocked. nothing ever happens here. some of our windows are smashed, walls cracked etc etc. the smell of gas is unbeleiveable.

Poor things...this sort of thing scares me so much. I had friends hurt in Bali and in London...so I am none impressed even if it is unrelated to terrorist actions....

    :(

Its more likely to be something just after taking off from Luton.
I seen in a paper a long time ago, the rate that planes come and go from Londons airports, and its within seconds of each other. And in one pic a plane was taking off feet above another plane that had just landed or something. Id say planes are hardly grounded long enough for full checks on them.

Sky News said there were no planes involved.

    It's on the Beeb:
Three large explosions have rocked a fuel depot near Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire shooting flames hundreds of feet into the sky.
Police say there are casualties and emergency services are at the scene.

Was watching a bit of the BBC news.. doesn't sound like there were too many people at the plant, and seems more likely it was an accident that a plane crash or bomb.

Good to see your caps lock still works though. Yea, you could feel the viberations in Acton where I was. It not a plane though, the police have confirmed that.

turned on the tv this morning and thought "Oh god, not again", thinking it was some sort of terror attack.. that plume of smoke was huge..

Cil_Aine: Was your capslock key a victim of this explosion?

I was in Skopje over the summer, they bombed the central Police station when I was less than a mile away - I heard the bang, but completely failed to recognise it was an explosion. The peace process means I'm not hearing them too regularly, thankfully...

my caps lock key did suffer the explosion yes! christ people still cant beleive soemthing this big happened in such a backwater... oh well, life goes on.

i think another explosion just went off. bah, will start to get annoying now, especially once the fumes come down.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 354 ✭✭solicitous

Its it completely ruled out that there is any terrorist involvement?
My mother just said to me that it might be linked with the Briton currently being held captive...??

Where I am in Dagenham, in Essex, someone said that they could see the smoke from thair house. They're not that far away from me either... Hertfordshire is tens of miles away from me though...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,633 ✭✭✭stormkeeper

    Where abouts in Central?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,481 ✭✭✭Blisterman

Near London Bridge. At least I think it's the smoke. Could be a grey cloud.

In fairness... anybody stupid enough to give that kind of information to a Sky News reporter would probably have no problems giving it to someone wearing a badge with Al Quaeda written on it either...

That's not too far from Barking Station...

Edit: I dunno if I see the smoke or not, but there are aextremely dark clouds heading my way... O_o

Well it's very cloudy/misty in London at the moment. I can't see anything from the 7th floor of Television Centre and this is the highest building around.

I think I may be seeing smoke from the explosion... took a while to get here... hit Dagenham first which is further east of me!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,481 ✭✭✭Blisterman

Well, it;s too dark to see them now. But I took a picture of them earlier.
It looks kinda like dark clouds, but they're only in the north.
    Judge for yourself.

If you're going to criticise someone's level of intelligence, at least have the "cop on" to do it adequately :v:

My brother lives in St Albans and he was woken by the explosion. Apparently it has been dark all day. Sections of the M1 and M10 are closed off, however all airports seem to be operating normally.

Endurance Man, that had absolutely nothing to do with what I said.
What kind of a response is that anyway.

Please refrain from personal abuse in the future. You can do better than that.

England deserves to be stirred a bit. And the fact that that is my opinion has nothing to do with my intelligence.

You must have been trying to be ironic there.

I mean, dolphins are reknowned for being the most intelligent animals on the planet, maybe even more so than humans.

its been so cold here as well. the smoke of it blocked out the sun, so all the frost from last night stayed with us all day. manic petrol buying as well. the flames are crazy. it looks like it has a bit. oh well.

    vangelis? get a life.

You can't say too much about personal abuse considering what you're saying about the English. Incitement to hatred is a crime, not just a breach of boards.ie rules. I hate racism, and there's no call for you to condemn the English. What did they ever do?

    Fugliest URL ever.

The BBC has a gallery of some pretty scary images of the fire and smoke. Some of the pics of the tower of smoke is like something out of Tolkien.

However, I cannot help but admire this pic on their front page at the moment. Stunning photo.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 298 ✭✭cil_aine

yes i could see that sort of thing outside this morning, admittedly some of the images you see are stunning, in a wierd kind of way.
