You often hear people say they remember where they were when JFK or John Lennon was shot.
Can you remember where you were when the Twin Towers fell on Sept 11th 2001?

It's real boring, I was at school and they never even bothered to tell anyone. So I heard about it when I went home. I'll be honest here, I didn't really care. What with the teenage angst and all, the outside world was of no interest to me.

At home sick from school playing Settlers 3 when I got a phone call to tell me to turn on the news.

Had just got back from Montenegro to Dubrovnik with a friend and two New Zealand Girls. All the Croat's were saying 80,000 had been killed. We believed them since we were watching the TV coverage in Croation and could'nt understand what they were saying. Sitting on the beach that night felt like the end of the world, very surreal.

In Glasgow. To be precise I was on the loo in my Ex's house. Her mum had speakers in the bathroom and the radio was on. I'll never forget it.

Flew home 2 days later and I was freaked stupid boarding the plane. I was so paranoid it was unreal!

Home in my bed. No one botherd to wake me to tell me about it.. woke up about three o'clock in the afternoon and switched on the PC. Some news site or other came up and my first thought was - "haha! some crazy bastards hacked the site!"

I was in French class. One of the teachers came in and quietly told our teacher what had happened. Out teacher then proceeded to tell us what had happened in French, none of us had any idea what she was on about. She just kept smacking one hand into the other and saying "avion" (plane).

I was pissed off because they interrupted neighbours... but yeah, I sat and watched the news for the rest of the day. Then went for a beer.

I was at work, which is an electrical shop, and nearly all TV channels had switched to it, so it was hard for me to avoid.

I was at school, and bizarrely, didn't hear a single word uttered ANYWHERE about it until I arrived home at 5pm!!

I was planting tulip bulbs in my front garden listening to the radio. When the news came through of the first plane i pictured in my mind a small prop plane. Then i went indoors and saw the 2nd plane hit. It was like time was standing still as it was replayed over and over

Bit of a coincidence to see someone with the handle Timbuk2 posting right above - I was only a few hundred miles from Timbuktu in Africa when the news of 9/11 came in.

I don't know how long there was between it happening and us hearing about it, we were pretty much in the middle of nowhere working in a remote part of Ghana. It was eerie, with all of us huddled around the radio trying to figure out what had happenned.

The announcers didn't really have many details - there was talk of a bomb going off and then another bomb when the firemen arrived. Later, they brought a TV into the radio studio and just held the mic up to CNN.

One guy that was with us was particularly shaken, since he has family in Manhatten. It took him a day or two to get to a phone and find out that his family were all okay.

On our way home a month later, the newpapers had a different spin on things to the coverage here. It was only about a year later that I saw the video footage of the planes.

I was walking through town on my way home from school.
I called into a TV store, SKY news was playing on every monitor and I can remember people gathering around just staring at the screens in silence with their mouths gaping open. No one knew what to do or say.
Then some guy opened a bottle of coke that sprayed all over him.

I heard my friend say something about the Pentagon at the lockers in school. On my way home ppl were string at me with shocked faces (didn't know why). Then I got hjhome, was in my back garden putting my bike in and my Mam ran outside and said

"Terrorists have crashed into the world trade center"

    SHe was frantic//in disbelief.

I thought she meant the IRA crashed a bus into the Central Bank.

Logical when you look at it:

Beack then the only terrorists we knew really were the IRA (well me anyway).
    CENTRAL=WORLD
    Trade CENTER=BANK
Crashed into, well you'd need soething big fro central bank, a bus I though.

I wnet inside and was like "Oh the homer simpson twin towers" later that day my dad showed me photos of me on the WTC (i went back to Ground Zero two years later, it was a builidng site nothing more).

I actually didn't find it that shocking, it felt like a movie tbh!

My friend AND a teacher said that World War 3 was starting. I lived in fear.

Then I didn't understand why a religious president wanted revenge...

I was in work, at an engineering meeting. As I remember, everyone seemed excited and maybe even happy with the news, but then when the media spin on the loss of life was delivered, they all started to act like they were really sad about it. Weird people.

At whatever hour it was over on the Left Coast, somewhere akin to shortly after 07:00 I was preparing for my morning commute. It was going to be a half-day, my ex's brother was flying in from NYC to SFO for a holiday, and I'd meet him at the airport. I got a 'phone call. It's the ex.

"What time is John's plane leaving New York?" (In a panicked voice)
"Eh? Well, I'm picking him up at about 12:15"
"No, I mean what time is it taking off?"
"I have no idea... well.. if it's landing at 12:15, figure a five hour plus flight time, three hour time zone difference, should have taken off anywhere from half an hour to an hour ago. About 9am. Why?"
"My God.. have you not been watching the news?"
"No, I'm getting ready to go to work, why?"
"Planes have hit the World Trade Center"
    "What?!" (Disbelief)
    "Go turn on the TV"

I go over, turn on the TV, and it's a split-screen between the WTC and the Pentagon. At almost that exact moment, the first tower went down. Ex was horrified "Oh my god it's collapsed"

I just said something like "It would appear that someone has declared war on the US."

Turned out that the ex's plane was still on the tarmac, but saw the towers out the airplane window. They never took off.

Put a set of BDUs and my pistol in the back of the car and went to work. Quiet day there, but otherwise business as normal. Got a call about 11am from the Guard unit just doing a comm check telling us to stay near a 'phone that they have a number for.

    NTM

Was in Dublin watching it on tv forcing myself to believe what I was seeing. Futily trying to phone my friends and family in my home town of NYC to no avail and hoping no one I knew was dead or burning to death or losing someone they love.
