    I'm getting pissed off with my friends telling me I am taking too much protein. I don't think I am. As has been discussed on here loads, there is no medical proof that says too much protein can cause irreversible kidney damage or any other damage for that reason.

    theres lots of cultures where they eat loads of meat fish etc and i have never heard of them having increased kidney problems !
    i try and get 1gram per lb minimum and find it hard getting it even with whey protein supplements
    when we lived in caves we would have ate a lot of protein from meat and fish and less so from carbs so i think our kidneys can cope plus most people who lose one kidney function fine with one so i think 2 kidneys can cope with 1.7grams per lb
    i think if an individual had renal problems maybe too much protein would be detrimental but in a healthy person i doubt it would

    Eating too much protein can cause hyperkalaemia which in turn can be fatal. Hyperkalemia is having too much Potassium in the blood-stream and, indeed, Potassium is a component of protein. But like, I think you'd want to be eating an extremely enormous amount of it to become hyperkalaemic!

    The reason why they said that it can damage your kidneys is because the excess Potassium is taken out of the blood by the kidneys and then excreted through the bladder. But again, I think you'd want to have dodgey kidneys and to be eating an extremely enormous amount of protein for this to occur!


    Most of the protein you are eating is probably never absorbed in your body and is merely egested.

    Hey Chucky,

    the condition you mentioned is normal only a risk to people who may be also at risk of dehyrdration. ( i.e bodybuilders preparing for a comp etc! )

    Drink enough water and you can eat all the protein you want. In the past, while on a low carb binge, and in order to hit my calories for the day, i have gone up to about 2.5grams per pound of lean body mass a day!
