Best and Worst Names

In general, unusual, unique names and Irish names are good (as along as their not ridiculously common - aine, anyone?)
Names I hate include Karen, Rachel/Rachael, Meghan/Meghann, Larry, Eoin, Saoirse (shudder!), Tracy ...

Is there a general trend towards detested names or am I subconciously choosing these names from previous experiences with thus-named individuals ?(I dont think this is the case though!)

    I don't think there's a "trend" toward hated names; it's just a preference thing.

    tadhg!!!very bad!!!!

Tadhg is a very very mispelled but sexy name........ mmmmmmm especially Tadhg Kennelly!!!!

My daughter has an Irish name....Sorcha. She is the only one we have met here, a lot of people are unsure about it, but when they get used to it, they love it.

My son is Jordy......not Jordan just Jordy.

I like unusual names, that said my friend called her baby Sam a while ago...I thought 'god, how common, but it suits him'.

My sisters name is saoirse, I think its a beautiful name. It means freedom, I think its really lovely.

Is there a general trend towards detested names? I am not sure I understand, are you asking if names that you don't like are becoming more popular? Possibly, but just because you don't like them doesn't mean they are detested by the majority of us.
I mean, surely if almost everyone detested these names, they wouldn't be becoming increasingly popular.

Karen - not a bad name
Rachel - probably popular because of Friends, not a personal favourite but i don't hate it
    Meghan - Nice for babies
    Larry - Old mans name
    Eoin - i like it
    Saoirse - Lovely name
Tracy - to me thats kinda like Ja-cin-tha

EDIT: If you think karen, rachel, meghan, larry, eoin and tracy are irish names, you're sadly mistaken!

just because you hate the names, doesn't mean that everybody does. thats your opinion. you're entitled to have it. but it doesn't mean the names are horrible!

Best = most Irish names for a girl.

Worst = most Irish names for a boy. Sorry but they nearly all just sound stupid.

I have a pretty common English name and all my Irish teachers went thru the usual rigmarole of naming the class 'as Gaeilge'. I didn't like Irish version so I never responded to it when called. After getting kicked out of class a few times they just decided to give up and would call by my English name.

I would go thru this routine almost every year with each new teacher until they all had no choice but to refer to me in English.

Learning the language is one thing but my name is my name and no trumped up bookbasher is going to call me any different.

my friends name is Ailbhe, pronounced AL-va.
if i have a girl ill name her either Sophie or elisha. (depends on if the other half agrees :))
I also like irish names like Kiera, Sheena.
Lads names like Cian Connail are good.

Some of them work though, like Sarah-Ann or Julie-Ann or Anne-Marie or Mary-Ann

Actually just shove Ann(e) before or after a girls name and it works.

In my experience girls called Leanne are usually big heffers.
And girls called Mary or Marie suffer from personal tragedy or bad luck.

I love most Irish names apart from some girls names like Siobhan and Sinead and Grainne. I love the name Ruaidhri especially if it's spelt that way. i'm not a huge fan either of American names like Morgan, Meghan, Dean or when people feel compelled to name their children after places like Paris. It's inhumane.

Can't stand American names like Brad and Todd. Sound bloody gay or something!

Maybe some of ye might find this strange but, for some reason, I'm not too keen on my own name, Aidan. What pisses me off most about it is people spelling it wrong and, over the years, I've had it spelt some very weird and wacky ways. Aiden (the most common misspelling), Aidann, Aeden, Aedan, even Aoedann! Really gets on my nerves at times. Maybe it's time I got it changed by deed poll or something! :D

padraigin is the irish for patricia. doesn't make it any nicer but there you go. another woeful translation is 'gearoidin'...

i like some irish names for boys; oisin, sean, finn/fionn, macdara etc. but not so much for girls... although i also like finn for a girl. girls names i like are ella, leila, hannah. there's more but i don't want to think of them all.

awful, awful names (imo) include; britany, tiffany, bethany and the like. i don't like christina either.

I think all Irish names are pretty horrible. Why call your kid an Irish name just because you believe in some kind of cause or revival. You should call them a name that sounds nice.
I like Bible names, Classical names, maybe some more old fashioned ones. Much nicer. You need a strong name. These ones tend to show that trait more.

Not mad on Leonitta or Doris or Mavis or Frances for a girl or Lance,Bruce,Laureance or Cailib for a boy

Agnes or Gladys aren't my favourite names.

But the worst cruelty in the naming stakes is to give your boy-child a girls name like Leslie or, God forbid, Mary. :o
