The year draws to a close and I went to a good few gigs, some great and some terrible. Some worth their money and others just brilliant.

    I went to see:

    Erasure, Support: Piney Gir
Paul Di Anno, Support: Scavenger, Involution
Tears for fears, Support: Fran King
    Queen and Paul Rodgers
Duran Duran, Support: The Bravery, Daniel Bedingfield
Elton John, Support: James Blunt, Rufus Wainwright
    Royksopp
    Alice Cooper, Support: Twisted Sister
Kiss Expo in Nottingham with Eric Singer, Adam Bomb, Jazan Wild

With the exception of Paul Di Anno and Piney Gir they were mostly brilliant and I enjoyed it a lot.

Whom did you see this year and was it worth it?

Saw absolutely loads of bands this year, really has been a great year for live music, next year can only be better.

Best concert was The Stooges at London's Hammersmith Apollo.

Worst was The Dandy Warhols' woeful Ambassador gig.

REM in Ardgillan Castle, with Moby.
    Coldplay in Marlay
U2, the first night with Snow Patrol
    and Oasis in Marlay.

They were all a lot better than i was expecting them to be, especially Oasis and REM. Like the previous poster i'm also going back to Oasis on the 22nd, should be good.

Except for Eamon Doran's a couple of times, the only gig I was at all year was Sigur Ros in the Olympia.
    Paid well for it too.

However, if I had the choice to forfeit that gig in place of going to 20 gigs of my choice during the year, I would have missed the experience of a lifetime.
    Stunning show.

Debating going to Embrace on Sunday night. Have all of their albums but no one I know wants to go.

Going to Bellx1 after Christmas. Must make it a new years resolution to go to an average of a gig a month.

Does anyone recommend any good gigs in 2006. Strokes should be good. The festivals should be good this year. There's a lot of lively bands that were just getting established in the year gone by.

Grave, Megadeth & Diamond Head, Nile & Dying Fetus, Judas Priest, Pungent Stench, Anthrax, Malmsteen, Slayer, Taj Mahal, Vital Remains, Deicide, Steve Vai, Vomitory & Desecration, Gorgoroth & 1349.

Those are the gigs that i remember, could be a few more that i've been to, but the whole year is a big blur in retrospect. Did Obituary play this year or was it last year?

Didn't get to as many gigs as I'd like to have this year due to poverty and being busy working on stuff.

Pixies in Landsowne, Weezer in the Point and Smog in the Roisin Dubh were my favourite of the year though.

I'd a very quiet year for gigs:

Green Day @ The Point (support: New Found Glory)
U2 @ Croke Park (support: Ash)
David Gray @ The Point (support: Rodrigo Y Gabriela)

    Still.. enjoyed all 3 gigs!

    This year I went to:

    Low, The Village:
Good gig, warm response from the crowd. The new album sounds even better live, the faster songs have more energy and thump. Glad I saw them whilst Zack was still playing with them.

Damo Suzuki with E+S=B, support by Z'ev, Crawdaddy:
I've always wanted to see Z'ev as he's been a staple part of the industrial and experimental music scene for the last 25 years or so but he didn't do much for me that night. Damo Suzuki was good but not mind blowing.

    Einstuerzende Neubauten, Berlin
Einstuerzende Neubauten, Vienna (25th Anniversary show)
    Einstuerzende Neubauten, Paris:

Saw EN three times over their 25th Anniversary tour. Amazing every night. Played a lot of material that they've either never played live before or just haven't played in 20 years. Best show of the three was the Paris gig where Warren Ellis from the Dirty 3 joined them for two songs. Vienna was memorable because I got to go backstage and have birthday cake with the lads.

    Raul Malo, Whelan's:
Raul Malo from the Mavericks. I don't really like the Mavericks but my mother had a spare ticket for his solo show and I'd nothing better to be doing that night. I was very impressed. He's very similar to people like Roy Orbison and Chris Isaak. A pleasent surprise.

    Isis and Jesu, TBMC:

Everyone I knew at this gig either really liked Isis and hated Jesu or vice versa. I quite liked both. I was delighted to see Jesu because I missed out on Godflesh.

    Thighpaulsandra, Crawdaddy:
Perhaps the weirdest gig of the year. Thighpaulsandra sings songs about having the sleaziest, scummiest sex you can imagine. To weird freakout music. Think Yes but instead of Rick Wakeman you had a sex dwarf with a mohawk. His band consisted of two guys in red burkas and two guys in gold shorts (think Rocky Horror Picture Show). Absolute mind**** of a gig.

    Weezer, Vicar St.:
It was a good gig but it seemed a little empty for me. After waiting all these years to see them there it was a little bit of a let down. The songs I spent my teenage years listening to didn't sound so sharp now and the new songs weren't the Mae West.

    Fantomas, The Village:
Insanely good gig. Comprehensive review here.

    Wolf Eyes, Whelan's:
    Thirty minute set with more power and fury packed into it then ten back to back riots. Incredible stuff.

    Jerry Fish, Vicar St.:
Another gig that I got given tickets for because someone else couldn't go. It was entertaining at the time but not very memorable or impressive. More like a night out at a pub band.

Devendra Banhart and Sir Richard Bishop, The Village:
Sir Richard Bishop was deadly. I like the Sun City Girls but solo he's far more interesting. Some of the best guitar playing I've ever seen. Banhart was exactly what I was expecting yet not what I was expecting at the same time. I didn't expect a full band but they really added to the songs. Although I did like the way he kept a couple of songs for himself solo at the end. Comprehensive review here.

    Presidents of the USA, TBMC:
Forget Weezer, this was the gig of my youth that never happened. It was hot and sweaty in the TBMC and the band were on top form. I felt like I was 14 all over again. I can say nothing about this gig apart from hooray!

Chemical Brothers and Sonic Youth, Marlay Park
I had seen Sonic Youth before and left after two songs. However I really dug Sonic Nurse and have missed the Chemical Brothers every time they've played here so I decided I'd head to this. I was glad I did, Sonic Youth were much better this time. Chemical Brothers were non-too-shabby either. Best light show I've ever seen.

Iron Maiden, Marilyn Manson and Turbonegro, RDS:
Turbonegro were better than expected. Pretty funny too. Mansons was another of my teenage years catching up with me. He was entertaining but didn't have the impact that he would have on me eight years ago. Iron Maiden were great but the sound wasn't great.

    Electric Picnic, Stradbally Hall:
Great weekend, much better then Oxegen. Bands of the weekend were the Flaming Lips, Kraftwerk, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and LCD Soundsystem. Biggest disappointments were the Arcade Fire and the fact that James Blunt didn't die.

    Meat Beat Manifesto, TBMC:
Good gig but not much of an atmosphere because no one turned up. Comprehensive review here.

Damo Suzuki with the Jimmy Cake, Speigeltent:
This was a far better show by Suzuki compared to the one earlier in the year. With the Jimmy Cake backing him I closed my eyes and imagined I was in Cologne during the 70s at a Can show. It was one of the best gigs the Jimmy Cake have done and Damo Suzuki looked like he was having a great time. Comprehensive review here.

    Githead, The Sugar Club:
My first time in the Sugar Club, nice place. Githead were good, the venue suited them. Met them afterwards, very nice guys, gave me a cool badge. Comprehensive review here.

    Sigur Rós, The Olympia:
What would have been a fantastic gig was taken down a peg by an awful, disrespectful crowd. Amina Strings were deadly, great to listen to and to watch ;). Sigur Rós weren't quite as good as they were in the Ambassador and I was disappointed they didn't play Haffsol.

Dirty Three and Josh Pearson, The Village:
Dirty Three never disappoint. Great gig. Josh Pearson was great, much better than with Lift to Experience. Comprehensive review here.

    Supersilent, The Sugar Club:
I was led to believe these guys were life-changingly brilliant but I thought they were fairly dull. Comprehensive review here.

Khanate, Oak and Wreck of the Hesperus, Whelan's:
Oak sucked. Wreck of the Hesperus were pretty good. Khanate slayed. They ****ed up my hearing for a couple of days but it was worth it. Comprehensive review here.

Antony and the Johnsons, Vicar St.:
Magical gig. I missed him the last time he played (luckily I had seen him with Lou Reed before) so I was delighted to get tickets for this. The man simply is unbeatable vocal wise. Comprehensive review here.

One can tell by the name "klingklang". Just bought the Minimum-Maximum double DVD at HMV for € 28,- and it is more than worth it.

Went to "Chapters" recently and they have this book "1001 albums you absolutely have to hear before you die". Guess who is on the cover: Kraftwerk!!

    They r great

I want to get the notebook version of the DVD set but I think it's quite expensive.

Saw that book in chapters too, it looks kind of interesting in a "if I got this for christmas I wouldn't complain but I'll probably only read it once" sort of way.

They did play up north, in Belfast. No Dublin date oddly enough.

    Velvet Revolver
Sonic Youth(I left before Chem Bros. really wanted to see Sonic Youth but no one would come with me so I was on my own and didn't feel like staying to see a band I'd never listened to, kinda regret it now though...)
    Pixies

Gigs I'm pissed off I missed:
    Dinosaur Jr
    Dio
    Mike Watt+the Secondmen

I regret missing Kraftwerk, Tears for Fears, Iron Maiden, Fantomas, The Psychedelic Furs, Sleater-Kinney, Animal Collective... sure there's a few more... I was interested in going to Sigur Ros but that soon sold out... I also missed Hot Snakes' Whelans gig which is a real pisser as they've since broken up.

Weezer in Vicar Street would have been brilliant but they had to be playing there right before the Leaving Cert so I had to pass. Them playing The Point soon enough was fine consolation (just glad I didn't have to wait until they had a new crappy album for them to play here with) and it was exactly the crazy jumpy poppy gig I wanted.

And of course, I missed Sonic Youth at Marley Park, although it was only a support slot in the end. If I were in Ireland at the time I would've definetly gone, but for now I'll just hold out for a theatre gig.

hehe that leaving cert didn't stop me, my ears were killing me during english.

also try going to see biffy clyro on saturday when your german oral is on monday, not good stuff. luckily i didn't need high points.

you got the better of the two weezer gigs, same amount of pinkerton more of blue at the point but the sound was dire as always with the point.

I saw them in 1998 ("Jugulator" Tour) before they reunited with Rob Halford.
