    Lads,

Does anyone know what the Irish record for bench pressing is by weight class.

My mate is 5 11 74kg and can comfortably press out 6 or 7 reps of 120kg...
Everyone at the gym thinks its crazy and must be some sort of record.

Personally I bench my weight (65kg) and am happy enough with that. I can't imagine bencing over 100kg, lket alone 120kg.

look up idfpa.plus.com its the irish drug free powerlifting association. 6-7 reps at 120 would be approx 140kg 1 rep max. now thats only a guess. (remember also in powerlifting benchpress you must pause on the chest and then press evenly to lockout.) it might not be a record but still that is a great weight to be lifting presuming he's drug free. very impressive esp at his meagre weight. you know too that you can compete in benchpress only competitions? tell him give it a try. he might do well

    hey RPGGAMER,

Thanks for the reply and the info. yeah my mate is 100% drug free, just big into his lifting. He's at it about 4 years now. I reckon he would love to give a benchpress competition a go, so I must find some details and pass them onto him.

    hey RPGGAMER

found great info on that site including the 2004 results for bench presssing in my mates weight class... http://www.idfpa.plus.com/2004Irish_BP.xls
he would need to be benching 150 to take it. Will pass on the info to him.

    great link!! thanks;)

He should be very close to doing 150. When I was able to do 120 for 8 I got 3 out of 140 and I would of done 1 from 150 I think.

What age is he? Also I was in the idfpa and the form for bench is alot stricter than most people use. You've to hold the weight fully extended, rest it on the chest for about a second or two (til the judge claps), go back to extended position and rack the weight. It takes about 5-10kg off a PR if you don't have good form.

If your friend is a senior, he's nowhere near Maurice who benches 180+kg at that weight. Junior and it's competitive.

what is correct grip technique? i see all my friends holding the bar with a very wide grip yet i do it so when the bar is touching my chest my hands are rubbing off my side! is mine wrong?

My mate is 28. Maurice is under 75kg and benches 180+kg? Maybe Im reading the spreadsheet wrong. didn;t see anyone results for anyone benching 180+kg in the 75kg class?

poobum you are not wrong for building muscle but you are doing more work than your friends. You are lifting the weight the full lenght of your arms where if you had a wide grip you would only lift it half the distance.

If you do change it will be hard on the outside of your chest for a while (its nearly more like a dumbell flies motion) but when you get used to it you should be able to lift alot more weight.

which would be best to do like? im doing weights for rugby so which would benefit sports better? my way or there way?

What are your goals? Both ways will build the same amount of muscle but their way you will lift more actual weight. Their way is probably better for your ego and motivation.

The widest legal grip is index finger on the ring on an Olympic bar. I do it for muscle gain and have very long arms so find middle or index on ring is fine for me. The tip is "square like a box" to feel it best on the pecs - ie if you looked at the shape of the arms your bar and chest it should be roughly square. The same tip goes for shoulder presses - this helps feel the delts work more than the triceps.

As a general rule, the narrower the grip, the more triceps assistance. The wider the grip, the more front delt assistance. Generally, people have stronger delts than tris so a wide grip makes them bench more, in addition to the shorter range of motion.
