well if ur getting text messages then you can see the phone number, can u not call the provider and ask them to block the number? garda will take it seriously as i have gone through something like this before.

Ahhh I love that name, reminds me of my first childhood crush on the woman in bewitched. Although I think her kids name was Tabatha!

Oh god, I googled Tabatha, definitley not safe for work! Elizabeth Montgomery though....

Wow - how practical! Cos I'm sure his girlfriend will be sitting beside a PC with a soundboard open at the exact time he calls again.... I'm sure the OP appreciates you providing him with the perfect solution - problem solved!

To the OP - if you are getting text messages, surely you can see the phone number, no?

Yup, but we dunno who it is. When ya ring it, it just rings out. I've spoken to la guards this morning already - they just said to ask our mates to see who could be messin around.. great help!

Did you ring the number back with your number blocked (and soundboard prefereably)? I presume who ever was ringing you was disguising their voice in some way if they knew you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,183 ✭✭✭Fey!

It does get taken seriously by the Gardai. What you need to do is keep all the messages, and log the times of all of the calls; this will give them frequency of calls, and allow them to confirm a nuisance.

Sometimes it will go to court, but I understand that it some cases all it takes is the local Garda calling around to tell young Mickie to cut it out. Depends on how bad it is, I suppose.

    Good luck sorting it out.

I find that hard to believe. I had a similar issue in 1999, and the Gardai took it very seriously and (liasing with Eircom) had it sorted within an hour with a personal visit to the callers house.
I just called the "malicious callers" phone number in the front of the Eircom phone book.

I feel pitty for your girlfriend she must be fairly peed off with this annoying ****errr!!

Well like some of the other people here have posted already, to try & get this number blocked from her phone. You could ask the gardai about this maybe if she could keep a record of every call & txt msg she recieves from this guy.

Alternatively she could buy another sim card change her number?? I know to do something like this is so annoying as you have to let everyone know on your address book your changing your mobile number. If this will give her a quiter life maybe she should just think about doing something like that???

Ring the voicmail of the person. If its 087 just put a 5 before the rest of the number. Thats what I do if I miss a call from a number I don't recognise. Most people have a voicemail set up.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,719 ✭✭✭Ruaidhri

Try ramble on? It's their money wasted at the end of the day. I've had a few annoying callers in my time. Also, put the number in your phone book and assign a silent tone as a personal ring.
Alternatively, there's always o2sms and a little loop script...

Yes, and when the "thank you for calling me, sorry I can't answer..." message starts, press #0000#. Most likely this will get you into their mailbox...

Thats a great idea!! Also sign them up for jamster etc so they loose monies/credit!! Did you contact the network - they should be able to trace the sms!

Post the prankster's phone number up, and everyone on boards.ie can prank him.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 164 ✭✭Gaz25

I had the same problem about 3 years back i sent a mgs to the wrong number and was geting annoyed for weeks. I rang there number and did finlma suggested and i changed there voicemail and told them if they bothered me again they would regret it. I never heard back from them again.

The other option is to post the Mobile number like hullaballo said i would gladly send mgs to annoy the ****er's for you no probs

Great idea! Someone was pranking me for a few days last year(stupidly with no private number) so I sent about 50 messages from voda webtext to the effect of "f-off or these will just keep coming" , they rang me up, apologised, and gave me the number of the person who told them to ring me loads, i sent them about 20 text at around 3 or 4 in the morning. It stopped. I suggest you do the same. I'd gladly send all my 300 free voda texts to them too! lol

So if the number was 087 4815162342, dialling 087 5 4815162342 gets straight to their mailbox?

Does this work for other networks?

    [edit]Apparently it does[/edit]

if changing the number was out of the question.. id do something like this.. except id make sure the bastards phone would be ringing 24/7

meh.. maybe not worth the trouble.. id change the number..

I agree tho, that the way telephone networks and the law works is messed up.= in situations like this-- you should have the right to find out what number is calling [if ID is off] or who is texting [if theyve registered theyre fone]

<snip> Don't post people's phone numbers on here please. Read the charter. - nesf

Jus so you know, its not so much phone calls, but perverse text messages, seriously sick stuff.

I called the gardai and they said to try think of who it might be, as another friend of ours is receiving textx from the same number, so most likely, its someone we know.
They also said that if the number has not been registered there is not much that anyone can do, other then to block the number from sending stuff to my girlfriends phone.
But it wont stop who ever it is from doing it to other people.

Most phones these days are registered. Was talking to one of the managers of Eircom(recently bought Meteor) and he was saying after they originally brought out the pre-pay phones it was great but then 2 years into the project they had no idea who had bought the phones or who was there traget group for advertisement. Soon after this you seen the phone where you buy and get so much credit free. But to claim the credit you need to register with Vodafone/O2/Meteor. This was done so the companies knew there audience. The free text on web is also another way to get people with number from a long time ago to register.

I have rang Meteor before about blocking a number. Was renting a room and some chinese guy looked at it. Wanted to run a business from the room. Didn't rent it to him and for a week got random messages and calls calling me a racist because I never rented him the room. Meteor understood but couldn't block the number. Was just about to head to Garda when the calls and stuff stopped.

From what you have said on here I don't believe you have gone to Garda yet. Manager from Eircom as I have mentioned above was talking about this type of situation before and said the Garda will just call them. Get all the info on who it is and whatever. Also get Eircom to trace all the records of calls/messages and then would probably come back at another stage to block number. Mostly he says once the Garda get all the information they sort it. Probably a callout to house with information and a gentle warning to sort it out.

I guess the number you have listed below is the number of the person. Meteor so they prob have registered with meteor so Garda can trace no problem. I can't see the Garda telling you to ask your friends. Think your talking B**s**t there!

Look man, believe what you want, but I have no reason to lie.
I called the gardai and they suggested we try sort it amongst ourselves. I called whitehall Garda Station, Jesus, I will even post the guards name if you want.
I am not in the habbit of lying, and certainly not with regard to a situation as serious as this one.

Well if you have the Garda name and station. Ring and complain. That is no atitude. Even if it is a friend the Garda should still contact them. If is not up to you to resolve the problem. Name and shame officer I say

Why not ring direct to his voicemail? It might give his name at the prompt. Failing that just break into his voicemail and listen to any messages that he may have.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,563 ✭✭✭connundrum

Guys, we have tried all of the above. He has no voicemail, from what we can make out he literally just uses this number to be a disgusting pig. He never answers, either to a revealed or private number. Meteor won't divulge any info cos of customer confidentiality etc. And as for naming and shaming the Guard.. come on, back to the real world. The advice she gave (when you think about it) was all that she could have given over the phone. 80% of prank calls/texts are done by people you know.. the only problem is in finding out who that person is! :(

Ring meteor on + 353 1 430 7085 . Do not get off the phone until you speak to somebody in authority. Explain to them the situation. Tell them that a customer of theirs is in breach of their ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY and quote from http://www.meteor.ie/about/usage.html item 2.1 . Ask for the persons name and explain to them that you are giving them 24hrs to sort this out. Explain to them that you have evidence of this abuse and that you have spoken to the Guards about this. Get back onto the Guards and insist on making a complaint. Do not be fudged by meteor or by the Guards about this. If necessary, you can apply to a court for an order allowing you (or the Guards) access to this persons records. Txt abuse is viewed very seriously by the law (even though it appears that this particular Guard is not taking it seriously) and a number of cases have been taken by private individuals against others. Do not let this go by the by. Convince both meteor and the guards that you are serious about this and take it further.

Brilliant advice from Hobart, and do not for God's sake complain about a copper, they never forget and if you're looking for their help some day the complaint will have been noted, better to be as incognito as possible where the Guards are concerned imo:mad:

Here's what to do. I'll ring the guy from my moby and pretend to be a real dub delivery man. I'll find out his name and address etc and give them to conundrum.

And here's the best bit; I'll record it and post it up here when I've done it! Ha!

*I kind of need conundrum to ok this first though!

I can't imagine the guards doing much to be honest. I would say there are loads of people who mgs everyday. I would keep all the mgs that are sent so you found who it was and if you really were pissed see if you could press charges or something.

I would probably post the number up here for everyone who reads the or get someone from to ring the number and pretend to be looking for some and see if they get a name or something like that. The only other option is to chnage the number but if they know your girlfriend they chance;s are they will get the number again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,611 ✭✭✭✭Sam Vimes

    port the person to o2.

go into an o2 shop and say you want to port. the person in the shop might want to ring the phone to confirm its yours. if they do say you don't have it with you and they'll probably do it anyway. the customer care won't ring the person, it's up to the shop assistant to do it. it'll cost you a tenner to do it and you'll have to sign a form but it'll be fun.

someone on meteors been prank calling me for about two years. i know his name, address and date of birth so last week i phoned up meteor and said i lost my phone and got them to blacklist the phone and block his sim card :D :v: then i said i'd moved house since i registered and got them to change the address on the account

i realise its against the law. so is harrassing texts messages and calls at half one in the morning from february 2004 right up til today to four people. we went to the police and they basically told us to fook off so i took matters into my own hands

and while not illegal, telling a girl we both know that i'm doing it to him among other lies isn't very nice

if you are going to the guards . dont speak to the guy at the enterence . just ask to be send to a somone in charge they should bring you into the back of the station and into office .the guard should then explain to you what will happen when you decide you want to take if further and that you cant back out of it if it turns out to be your brother or simular .

if the guards feel that you are messing around with them they will tell you to leave because naturally enough they dont want people waisting there time .

keep all the txt messages . show the guard you gf will have to be the one doing this . the guards will ring whoever is in charge of the number(vodaphone o2 or met ) inform them of whats happening and if the person has signed up and is known they will call around to there house and have a quick chat .

if it can be solved out of court its better but if even one txt msg comes from him after you should have the full powers of the law comd down on the guy .

also go to a different station . one that is not as busy . the guards have to do some of the worst jobs in the country so dont be disrespectfull

good luck and i hope its sorted before the weekend

Right guys, please don't ask for a person to post the harasser's mobile number on here. It's crap and very annoying when someone is harassing you but posting their number on a public bulletin board is as bad.

Get the number blocked, and report it to the gardaí or the phone company. I'm sure there are numbers to ring on the respective sites.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,915 ✭✭✭Siogfinsceal

happened to a friend o2 said they will track it if it happens 3 times i think you neeed to write down the date and time and i think you have to be willing to let the guards get involved too. tip: i had somone doing this to me if its a text call the voicemail 08x-5-the number and see if theres a name there. if its leaving voice messages then hit 6 on the messages and it will call the person back i caught someone out doing that they were dialling my voicemail direct and leaving messages they didnt think I could call them back that way.

I made the mistake of sending this guy a message asking why he was harrassing people. He said it was just for a laugh.

That was before a stream of gay messages, and pictures of his own penis began to arrive.

I dunno. He's a really messed up guy that's for sure, I hope to god you don't know him in person whoever he is.
