New Services to Ireland West Airport Knock

Bus Éireann Introduces Seven Direct Coach Services a Day to Ireland West Airport Knock from Galway & Sligo

Bus Éireann is to introduce seven direct coach services a day to Ireland West Airport Knock from Sligo and Galway from 31st January 2010.

Bus Éireann has altered the routing of its Route 64 Galway-Sligo-Derry service to serve Ireland West Airport Knock following consultation with airport management. The change has been introduced on a trial basis and will be made permanent if there is sufficient demand for the service.

“Bus Éireann is pleased to be able to offer direct coach services to Ireland West Airport Knock on our Derry/Sligo/Galway route 64, connecting with our nationwide express coach network. Judging by the popularity of our other direct airport services, the travelling public like the convenience of using public transport to and from airports. Customers have no car parking to worry about, no driving and will have direct access to all the towns along the western seaboard. We look forward to working with the airport staff to make these services a success,” said Rory Leahy, Regional Manager, Bus Éireann.

The revision in the routing of Route 64 will provide seven services a day from Galway and seven services a day from Sligo to the Airport.

Services from Galway to Ireland West Airport Knock will depart daily at:

    06.00 (Monday to Saturday only); 08.45; 10.30 (Monday to Saturday only); 12.00; 14.10; 16.00; 18.10.

Services from Sligo to Ireland West Airport Knock will depart daily at:

    06.00 (Monday to Saturday only); 08.00; 10.00 (Monday to Saturday only); 12.00; 14.00; 16.00; 18.00.

Due to the re-routing of route 64, the 449 Charlestown-Ireland West Airport Knock feeder service will be withdrawn from 31st January 2010.

    ENDS.

    http://www.dublinairport.com/at-airport/latest-news/260110_newroadT2.html
New Access Road at Dublin Airport will Present Exciting Views of Airport’s Second Terminal, T2

Passengers departing from Dublin Airport will be presented with exciting new views of the Airport’s second passenger terminal (T2) from tomorrow as a result of significant changes to the Airport’s internal road network.

From early morning, Tuesday January 26, passengers, who are being dropped off by private car at the existing passenger terminal, Terminal 1, will access that terminal via a new road that takes them through the centre of T2.

Passengers using the short-term car park and those arriving by taxi, bus and coach will, for another two months, continue to access Terminal 1 by the existing approach road that runs alongside the front of T2.

The traffic changes are part of the ongoing programme to upgrade the airport’s campus roads and will be clearly signposted on overhead gantries and other signage as vehicles enter the airport. Full details are also available on the Dublin Airport website, www.dublinairport.com

"One of the key strategies underpinning the design of T2 was to ensure efficient traffic flow on the airport’s internal roads by providing dedicated access and exit roads for each passenger terminal,” said DAA, Director – Dublin Airport, Robert Hilliard.

“Tomorrow represents the first stage in the process whereby, from March all passengers departing from Terminal 1 will access that terminal via the new road through the heart of T2.

“The new access route will not only offer dramatic views of T2 but also signal that the new terminal is close to completion and on schedule to commence full operations in just ten months time, November 2010,” he added.

T2, which will accommodate all Dublin Airport’s long-haul traffic and offer a unique new customs clearance facility for US-bound passengers, will transform the customer experience at the airport by offering more space, comfort and choice across both passenger terminals.

The DAA’s overall €600m investment in T2 will deliver the passenger terminal itself, a new 19-gate boarding gate facility, new aircraft parking stands, a new energy efficient combined heat and power plant and a major upgrade to the airport road network.

Statement from Bus Éireann on Service Changes

Bus Éireann has today (January 29th 2010) said that the implementation of changes to services with low customer support under its cost recovery plan as recommended by the Labour Court will begin on 28th February 2010. Changes to conditions of employment and other cost reduction measures under the cost recovery plan have already begun.

In recent years, Bus Éireann has significantly expanded its network of services across the country. However, the economic downturn has seen a significant drop in demand for public transport because of the fall in the number of people in work, the drop in the number of non-Irish nationals in the country, the significant slowdown in retailing and a substantial reduction in the number of tourists visiting Ireland. This has resulted in Bus Éireann customer numbers falling by over 10 per cent in 2009, which has impacted negatively on the company’s revenues and means it can no longer afford to operate the same high level of services as it has previously.

As a responsible commercial semi-State, Bus Éireann must address this situation by further reducing its cost base and bringing service levels in line with falling demand. According to an independent review by Deloitte, which was commissioned by the Department of Transport, because Bus Éireann is efficient “it will not be possible to make major cost savings on the Bus Éireann network without reducing services”.

Bus Éireann has continually reduced its cost base over the last number of years and further significant savings will be achieved through the implementation of the company’s cost recovery plan. The plan involves a reduction of approximately 250 positions across the organisation, alterations to work practices and terms of employment, and changes to services with low customer support.

The cost recovery plan is designed to protect as many services and jobs as possible so that Bus Éireann can continue to provide transport to the considerable number of people throughout the country who use our services every day, while returning the company to a stronger financial position.

The first changes under the plan involved alterations to work practices and terms of employment that will reduce earnings across the company. These changes will not have any adverse impact on services over the next four weeks. The plan will also see a reduction of approximately 250 positions across the organisation. Bus Éireann has received the required number of applications for its voluntary redundancy scheme under the plan.

From 28th February 2010, Bus Éireann will begin phasing in changes to services with low customer support as recommended by the Labour Court and the independent Deloitte report, which was commissioned by the Department of Transport.

Following a detailed review, service changes are being introduced on a phased basis and will focus on services that have low customer support. The majority of changes will be to the frequency of services or the routing of services. This is the start of the first phase of changes under the cost recovery plan. The level of further changes required will depend on the savings that can be achieved in earlier phases.

Unfortunately, there are a small number of services throughout the country that have very low customer support and given the current economic environment and the limit to the operational funds available to the company these services are no longer sustainable.

Such services often have five passengers or less per departure. In many such cases, the fare revenue from these customers doesn’t even cover the fuel for the bus let alone the wages for the driver or the maintenance of the vehicle. Bus Éireann must curtail such services otherwise it would have no alternative but to make changes to services that have much higher levels of support.

In making these changes, Bus Éireann will seek to minimise their impact on its customers and its integrated network as much as possible.

It is with great regret that Bus Éireann has to take this action, but it is unavoidable and necessary given the deterioration in the economy over the last 18 months and the subsequent fall in customer numbers. The company is acutely aware of the difficulties these changes may cause for customers and staff. However, implementation of the cost recovery plan, which follows on-going cost reducing measures over recent years, is vital to ensuring the continuance of as many of the our 330 routes as possible.

Safety and customer service will, as always, remain the company’s priorities.

Customers on routes where alterations come into effect from 28th February 2010 will be informed of the change to their service from today (29th January 2010) and information on service changes will be available from local travel centres and viewable at www.buseireann.ie. Further service changes will be announced in advance of them coming into place.

In light of the current economic position of the country, the company will continue to review its financial position on an on-going basis.

The following service changes to come into effect from 28th February 2010:
    Timetable and Route Changes

    Route 40 Cork-Tralee
Thirteen departures a day in each direction. Change will see one less departure - Tralee-Cork (Monday only).

As easy as gate 123 as airport sorts out a mess
    PAUL CULLEN

DAA CHANGES: TRAVELLERS FLYING out of Dublin from Wednesday are likely to notice a small but important change to their journey.

The boarding gates at the capital’s airport are being renumbered more logically. So it’s farewell to gate D60 and hello to gate 101, and farewell to gate B26 and hello to gate 306, as Dublin Airport Authority adopts a sequential approach to numbering at its main terminal.

On Tuesday night the existing signs will be taken down and replaced with the new numbering, which goes up numerically in an anticlockwise direction.

Dublin airport’s piecemeal development has left its piers numbered rather haphazardly. Pier D, for example, is before piers A and B rather than between C and E, so distracted early-morning travellers could end up wandering the wrong way in search of it.

DAA spokeswoman Siobhan Moore says the new layout will improve the experience of passing through the airport and allow for future growth.

The new numbering system starts with pier D, where from next week gates will be numbered in the 100 range.

Pier A, used by Ryanair for most of its flights, is renumbered in the 200 range; so A1 becomes 201. The pentagonal Pier B moves to the 300 range, with B21 becoming 301. Pier C is also changing to the 300 range, with its first gate, C41, becoming 331.
