Nancy Spains on Barrack Street in Cork is becoming the new blues bar. They have a jam session thursdays so you get to play with some of the best musicians in the city. and there is also live music on friday and saturday. thats also blues but sometimes it jazzy. but its great and i always enjoy myself there. the atmosphere is buzzing!:D

Highly reccommend the Sunday afternoon session 2 to 4pm by the Dublin City Big Band in Kielys in Mount Merrion www.kielys.com on a Sunday afternoon. More Jazzy than their title suggests. A great line up, some of the best talent around and some great interpretations and a cool way to spend a sunday afternoon, and , no, I am not connected with the Band. The gig is not being actively promoted other than on Kiely's website and these guys deserve to be heard by a bigger crowd. And I am not connected with Kielys either! Just an ordinary joe. So come on people why not make it a great atmosphere and turn up next Sunday at Kielys (Mount Merrion not Donnybrook)

couple of old and new soul classics. They aim to evoke the energy and
emotion of performers like Sam & Dave, Otis Redding and Buddy Guy.

The band was formed earlier this year and consists of well versed, tight musicians.

The
Brass section which features Stephen Maguire (Sax) and Joe McNamara
(Trumpet) have between them toured America and played in venues like
the Royal Albert Hall and NCH Dublin.

Harry Rambles (Guitar and
Vox) is a former folk musician who has had a residency in Whelans for a
year and gigged in most of Dublin's Venues. Dave Springer (Bass) is a
veteren of many bands including Swifthound and Mean Feat. Michael
Flemming (Drums) the young unknown is an extremely accomplished and
confident drummer and the back bone/saviour of the band.

Los
Alamos put on a show not just a collection of songs and hope to see as
much people as possible on the Eighteenth of September in Crawdaddy for

There’ll be a charge in the air this November as the Galway Jazz Festival fires up the city’s musical life with four nights of glorious music making. This fifth edition might still be a boutique, but its more than doubled in size since last year, and jazz admirers will have plenty to choose from in a line up that includes artists from Norway, The US, Germany, The UK and Italy as well as the highest achievers in Irish jazz.

It opens with a gala concert in St Nicholas Church with music that might have have been tailor made for such a resonant environment, when saxophonist Trygve Seim leads a band that reads like a who’s who of Norway’s extraordinarily fertile jazz scene. Joined by luminaries like trumpeter Arve Henriksen and accordionist Frode Haltli, all performing accoustically in a ten piece orchestra that utilises rarely sighted instruments like the bass saxophone, Seim creates exquisite and haunting tone poems that evoke his mentor Jan Garbarek. Rebecca Martin’s music is more modest in scale, but no less resonant. This artfully understated singer occupies her own terrain somewhere equidistant between Joni Mitchell and Norah Jones, and this adopted New Yorker works with the cream of that city’s musicians, who are drawn to the soulful jazz sensibility evident in her songwriting. In Galway she performs with the peerless bassist Larry Grenadier, here on a brief timeout from touring with piano great Brad Mehldau.

From London comes drummer Seb Rochford and Polar Bear, named for an animal that can appear cuddly, but is equallly capable of violent flare ups. Its an apt metaphor for this Mercury nominated quintet’s indie band ethos that melds clever jazz composition with electronica mash ups and turns from delicate to abrasive in a heartbeat. For their part, Ronan Guilfoyle’s Metier are just back from London, where they shared a double bill with Polish legend Tomasz Stanko in the prestigious QEH. As with Galway’s Contempo Quartet, Metier are an ensemble in residence, in this instance Dun Laoghaire Rathdown, and with a line up that convenes five of the strongest musicians in Ireland today, this is a quintet that positively bristles with creative energy.

Julia Hulsmann has just made her ECM recording, the critically acclaimed End Of Summer, but the Bonn pianist has been a stellar figure of the German jazz scene for well over a decade, making rhythmically insistent music that is both poetic and approachable, and with the fine detail that is a hallmark of great piano trios.

Dubliner Hugh Buckley is also back at the festival, with some impressive friends in tow for an exploration of the guitar world from both jazz and classical perspectives. The former is brought by John Stowell, the American guitarist whose career spans three decades and includes historic tours to the Soviet Union with flautist Paul Horn, the latter from Ballinasloe born John Feely, Irelands premier classical guitarist. Memorable solo, duo and trio encounters are in store. Rounding off proceedings nightly is Headford saxophonist Matt Berrill, taking time out from studies in The Hague to lead a specially convened festival group that features the best of emerging Galway voices like guitarist Aengus Hackett and trumpeter Conor Cantrell.
Ending each night in true festival style, the festival club will take place in Eyre Square’s Meyrick Hotel and will feature Matthew Berrill’s Galway Jazz Allstars with guests performing live music. The Club opens in the Oyster Bar from 11pm and runs til late.
Exploring the musical spectrum from established international performers to the brightest local talent, the beat goes on at the 5th Galway Jazz Festival.

There is a new venue in Howth, it has a baby grand piano in it, and every Sunday, Cian Boylan, Hugh Buckley and Damian Evans play there.

5-7pm. No cover charge. There's also a great restaurant upstairs with a Sunday special, I think it's a €20 3 course meal, but you'd need to check on that to be sure.

It's on over Christmas and all through Jan, and they just started a comedy club on Friday nights.

It's a really nice room, max occupancy 35-40 people. That's it.

Louth Contemporary Music Society’s first concert for 2010 features a performance by the great American pianist Uri Caine in St.Peter’s Church of Ireland Drogheda on 5 March 2010 at 8pm.

Pianist and composer Uri Caine gleefully and artfully ignores the boundaries between musical genres, mixing up Mahler and Bach with original music, swinging bebop and hard-hitting drum-and-bass. He launches LCMS 2010 concerts by performing John Zorn’s Book of Angel’s Volume 6: Moloch.

Moloch is a remarkable set of piano solos. Some of these pieces are dark, others very beautiful. All are played superbly and imaginatively. Uri Caine is a Philadelphia-raised virtuoso, unconfined by genres. Likewise-unfettered is the music’s composer, John Zorn, from whose Book of Angels {Masada Book Two} these pieces come.

In addition to performing solo and with his own ensemble, Caine has worked with groups, including those led by by Don Byron, Sam Rivers, Clark Terry, Arto Lindsay,John Zorn and Barry Altschul. He has also performed with the Woody Herman Band, the Enja Band, and Global Theory. Caine has appeared at many jazz festivals including the What is Jazz? Festival, the Texaco Jazz Festival (New York), the Montreal Jazz Festival, Jazz Across the Borders (Berlin), and the Newport Jazz Festival. Appearances at classical music festivals include the Salzburg Festival, the Holland Festival, and the Israel Festival. Caine is the recipient of grants from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Valerie Coyne Quintet returns once again to bring another night of Vocal Jazz to Bewleys Cafe Theatre with their rich repertoire of jazz standards, featuring their own arrangements and unique interpretations of some of the most beautiful songs ever written.
Joining them will be special guests The Jenna Harris Quartet. The Jenna Harris Quartet have been playing together since attending New Park Music College 6 years ago. New Park is renowned for its excellence in jazz and in bringing these musicians together it hasn't failed to live up to its name. Their set will consist of arranged jazz standards along with some compositions by Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen and some lesser know compositions by jazz vocalist Betty Carter. Their unique take on this material is not to be missed.
