josie murray disappeared from the irish bjj scene when royce gave someone else a blue belt. . . i believe he once gave out to royce over the phone because royce graded two of josies students at a seminar in london . . . heard from a reliable source too ;)

Why would he give out to a Gracie....Surely Royce would have enough knowledge of the art to grade a student..correct me if I wrong??!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 185 ✭✭waterford mma

he was angry that his students were being brought up to the same grade as himself. . . he used to bring gracies over regular enough, and he used to send everyone who went to the seminars letters about upcoming events, but ever since royce graded a certain amount of people in bray i guess he kinda got pissed off he wasn't royces only blue belt anymore. . . anyway, where he got this ultimate fighter thing out of is beyond me . . .

He should be proud to see his students progress to a better level even if it means beyond his level, again correct me if Im wrong!! Strange stuff indeed.

    Hosie Rocks,

anyone who says otherwise should have to fight him in the World Ultimate Fighting Championships in Brazil.

God help us if he ever hits the MMA League.

hhhmmmmm.... I don't get you guys

He made the front page of the Irish Figther and got a page and a bit of a write up.

Goes off to brazil to fight each year....according to the article he's 44.... I say fair play to him.

LOL, bless your little soul. The UFC is not held and has not been held in Brazil in about 8 years.

Not really much of an accomplishment there!

But seriously, fair play to Josie. The author isn't a martial arts head, so it's not that strange that he was confused when the history of the UFC and BJJ were explained to him. The article is about his success in the Masters Mundials.

there was apparently one other guy in his category (bjj not ufc) and josie came second fair play to him i say, does anyone know if hes still a blue belt or did he get his purple?

I think he's still blue Mick.

Still blue, at least he was when I saw him compete in Rio.

Ah - We were under the impression that Josie had said he fought in the UFC in brazil.

How did he get on in the mundials?

Well the article at least got that right, he took gold in his category this year at the Masters.
    Azul Senior 3 Masculino
    Leve
    Primeiro Josie Murray Gracie Humaita
    Segundo Expedit Valin Gracie Humaita
    Terceiro Ebe Gansah Gracie Barra

He won gold in his class in the 2005 Brazilian Masters World Jiu-Jitsu Championships not UFC... if your quoting the first post on this thread, it wasn't written by him. According to the article in the Irish Fighter he was given his purple belt by Rolker Gracie.

Credit where credit is due... I think it's a fantastic achievement, especially seeing as he's no spring chicken... how many other Irish people have fought and won in Brazil?????

To be fair, he actually won the 'no spring chicken' division.

And those who post here have ever won or even competed in Brazil in any class???

I won a four nations medal in tae kwon do once. You don't see me making a big bloody deal of it.

    Until now, obviously.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 695 ✭✭✭judomick

i won the irish championships, got 3rd in the europeans, im not in irish fighter claiming im a legend, or any other such nonsense, fair play to him thats agreed mostly upon whats jolly well ticking us off is the embellishment and exaggeration of stories (not necessarily mr.murrays doing), bjj no spring chicken division becomes ufc theres a huge difference there.

If I did what he did at 44 I'd make a huge fuss about it :D the article in the Irish Fighter was done from an interview and not written by him either.

Cool that you've both done well competing... why not make a big deal out of it???? I competed and won 15 years ago, was even on the telly... still have the newspaper clippings and am proud of me every time I look at them.

There's a picture and write up right beside Murrays in the mag about a 9 yr old getting his junior black belt ......how cool is that for him!!! and I just noticed that theres a photo and a mention of me too :D

Sure, Rob Crowell doesn't do a martial art but I think the magazine is great. Achievement should be recognised.... theres always people lining up to put you down.

BJJ's not UFC..... unless youre a hypnotherapist jumping on the back of someone elses sucess for some cheap advertising.... or me getting a busted lip from a few elbows in the face training on a sat afternoon

well from my experience the articles are submitted (no pun intended) usually by the person its highlighting

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,001 ✭✭✭MaeveD

.... I've written articles for it about seminars, visiting instructors etc, never about myself, so have quite a few of my ma friends, but I'm sure youre right that people do, articles are free advertising.... but even if he did have a hand in writing it... so what??

Have you read it? Is it spoofing about anything???

Occasionally when I am at home in Donegal I pick up the regional newspaper and look through it. Josie Murray features now and again in the sports section, with a picture of him putting someone in an armbar or something similar. The articles seem to be written by his one of his students.

Invariably he is referred to as 'the top jiu jitsu instructor in ireland', 'most senior trainer in the country' (I didn't get the impression they were talking about his age) and similar.

You can get away with a lot in a regional newspaper.

I think there's nothing wrong with a bit of self-promotion, but if he has genuinely done so well in his senior category competitions, then I think the hyperbole which these articles are characterised should be unnecessary, they have the opposite effect they are intended to on the reader, if they actually know something about the sport in this country.

This story about Josie falling out with Royce seems a bit fishy, seeing as Royce is coming to Donegal in Febuary. I was at Rolker Gracie's seminar in Letterkenny last Sunday and he was telling us that Josie is held in high regard by the Gracie family and that they are honored that he competes for their team. As for competing in a senior tournament or not look at it this way. It would be good to win a game of basketball against a European team but you couldn't compare that to beating a team like the LA Lakers could you? I'd say it follows that if you want to compete against the best fighters in BJJ you should really go to Brazil.

Actually if you wanted to compete against the best BJJ fighters you'd go to Brazil, enter the Mundials and Copa de Mundo adult black belt category in your weight class and the absolute.

did a few lessons in his class and found him (personally) very corteous and respectful. In short, he does not like bad language unlike many of the "hard men" meat heads that give the arts a bad name.

his credentials are bullet proof, if you disagree fight him.

too much is being read into a silly article, if you want to know anything about him give him a call and im sure you will find him pleasant.

Has anybody actually seen this clown compete in mma vale tudo or any kinda fight in ireland.he seems to bum an awful lot about brazil but it ain't hard to go for a holiday in brazil and drop by the local sport store for a new shiny medal on the way home. If he is what he claims to be he should be the top mma fighter in ireland lets put it up to mr murray to put up a list of his mma record in ireland. who he fought and on what promotion and what magical or mystical moves he finished each unworthy opponent with.

So u want to be an ultimate fighter PROVE IT

I've never actually spoken with Josie face to face but he seemed like a decent auld chap at the mmaleague, I'd speculate that he's bit of a pedantic old chap but his guys seemed to look up to him.

People coming on the forum anonymously taking swipes at him lacks a lot of class.

    Couldn't agree more.

Guys if you've a beef with Mr.Murray step up and voice it, try back it up with fact and not just run with the hounds.

Like many I've only ever come accross him via IrishFighter Mag. And he seem's decent enough to me.

as a matter of interest how many clubs have recieved the famous josie murray challenge. I no of at least 3.does he think he's helio gracie in the old days.if he has his challenge why dos'nt he fight in ireland is all i'm saying.plenty of mma talent in ireland bustin their balls training and competing in ireland and gettin little or no regonition. My beef is how somebody who seems to write his own articles or gettin club members to write articles for him glorifying himself gets recognition.again has anybody seen him fight in ireland or england.his record appears nowhere.
i remember he put up a challenge to john kavanagh and when jk accepted josie seemed to go all quiet

SFUKU: How did the Josie Murray challenge come about?

JK: I got a call off Dermot McGrath (The guy who organised the Irish Vale Tudo competition) at the end of February asking me if I was going to fight in his competition in may, I had exams and my next fight coming up so I said no. Dermot told me that Josie Murray wanted to fight me, I had heard nothing from Josie at all, I don't even know the guy but apparently he turned up at Dermots event in February wanting to fight me. Dermot rang again a few weeks later saying that Josie wanted to teach me a lesson or something and we organised a Superfight for his event in September. I agreed but I told him that I wanted only 3 rules, no biting no eye gouging and no fish hooking, Dermot rang me again a few weeks ago and as of yet he hasnÕt heard form Josie.

Its time to put up or shut up Mr Murray.
    We are all waiting

Dude - Josie doesn't read these notice boards, so best of luck getting an answer on that. At best his students will post something in his defence.
The SFUK article you dredged up is testament to the strength of your Search-Fu, it is ANCIENT history, and I mean it was ancient when Moses was a boy. That issue has been dealt with since than AFAIK, but either way I doubt either of them would want it dredged up. Josie does his thing in Donegal and has recently started bringing fighters to the League, so he is not as isolated as he was a couple years ago. I am not saying I go along with his marketing gimmicks, but they seem to work for him at any rate!

If you feel so strongly about this why set up a new account to hide behind?

I'm not a "JOSIE" warrior but I have trained with him. I found him to be very helpfull and the few times I made the trip to Donegal he went out of his way to make me feel at home. He seemed to be a sound guy as far as I could tell and I couldn't detect any hint of him being the cowardly ego-maniac he is accused of being on this and other forums. But here is what I do know, he brought Relson Gracie, and a friend of Royler Gracie call "Breno" who is a black belt under Helio to the N.W of Ireland to do some seminars and they both said that Josie is considered part of the Gracie Academy and he is their representitive in Ireland so I think questioning his credibility without knowing the facts shows what kind of credentials you yourself must have. He also brought Royce over! (unfortunately I didn't make it to his classes:()
Let's remember here that his club is primarily a BJJ and not a MMA club. So I don't see too many of his guys heading for the cages in England.
