What he said. I am because I'm rich and I can afford to experiment with things like this that cost money.

I'm not because... I have no need to. And I don't have the money to waste on this kind of stuff.

    I did, once......

Don't have a credit card though, or paypal, which makes it a pain in the arse trying to suscribe again :)

i did....but then some mod banned me from personal issues as he didn't like what I said when backing up another poster...of course they hadn't the balls or courtesy to pm me so I refused to renew my sub after this..their loss=my gain

On servers that haven't been able to support the search function for almost 3 months.

I would subscribe if there were some ACTUAL benefits of having a subscription and if it was priced reasonably ie. 1/10 th of what it is now.

    *IMO*

mabey if thay had a few more people that didnt mind subscribing when they could afford to might have helped regi get upgrades etc sooner

Well, no one is going to twist your arm to support us :)

Having said that, it was subscription money that enabled us to purchase all the recent hardware, and the upgrades that allowed us to turn searching back on.

ooopss.. turned out my subsription had expired just today.. so I wasn't actually a subscriber when I posted that I was.

Everything is sorted now and I'm signed up for another year of many productive and possibly monkey related posts!

Lol.....1/10...don't be expecting such a drastic offer anytime soon.

I think it's decent value. I also think its not really all about getting value for money and x and y features. Its just contributing to the well being of our favourite site and making sure it keeps running for the near future! :D

I'm a subscriber because I want to give a few quid back to something I really enjoy using. Poor students?, pull the other one, I finished College in June and whilst I had very little money as a student, I wouldn't say I was poor, a high majority of students drink all their budget and then blame the Government for not giving them a bigger grant (which they'd drink as well).

You propose €5 for a years subscription - what's that going to buy in regards to new hardware for boards, a pack of CD-R's?.

The amount of work people dedicate to this site out of their own free time and you think bunging them the price of a pint will do them?. Subscribing does have benefits, you give something back that gives something to you, it's called Karma.

    You tell em regi.
    €50 go's a long way.

I can't afford to buy Regi a new server, but I can afford to throw a couple of quid his way towards one. Thankfully there are enough others that have a few quid to spare and so we have servers. Even if all you can spare is a fiver, subscribe for a month, it's for a good cause.

Actually, forget about that until January, this and next month's good cause is the Santa Strike Force, I'm sure Regi won't mind waiting a little longer for his share of your money.

well servers especially for a site this big aint cheap, so the collective support from users makes getting a server easy, plus if you put things towards something you get something back.
    And feel nice inside.

    Anyway regi wont mind :D

I'm a suscriber - I do it on the basis that I use the web site a lot and feel a loyalty towards it and would love to see it develop even more. 50 Eur on the scale of things is not that bad. I have been on other web sites in the past that had paid subscriptions but none has given me as much joy as this site.

Yeah my stars can give you the answer.....

Well i got a subscription because i wanted to throw a little money boards way when the new servers were being bought and also because i had some money left on my 3V card and had nothing better to do with it...

The custom tag & avatar imo are the best features of paying a subscription...gives you a bit more freedom. Then there's the s&s forum which can be good to browse, though i couldn't care less about the blog because i hate blogs!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,227 ✭✭✭✭Sparky

well the S&S forum brought in a good bit of revenue

really want to subscribe - just don't have the money - will when i do. I get far more enjoyment out of this forum than out of say buying and reading the Irish Times. It's not for any benefits that being a member confers, its more to be 'giving something back'! Unfortunately the Irish Times sellers take cash is small amounts as opposed to the one lump sum payment to boards.ie that really needs a credit card...

I've noticed that many of the posters who subscribe also have the SSF in their sigs... conformists! :p

I wonder if the fee was halved would it encourage more users to subscribe ?

I subscribe because it makes me feel superior to those of you who don't. You tight-fisted hoors.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,486 ✭✭✭Redshift

I also sub every year and have done since it became an option there are two main reasons.
What I get out of boards in terms of enjoyment alone is easily worth 50 euro a year and secondly if people didn't subscribe, boards would most likely have collasped under it's own weight by now and be either gone or virtually unusable.
The few extra options subscribers get are beside the point of subscribing; I don't use any of them and would subscribe even if there were no extras.
