Dont expect any comercial hotspots to work. Eircom, Bitbuzz and all the rest of them require you to login to a webinterface before you can get online. Nintendo would have to mpartner with them to get them unlocked for DS traffic.

In case it comes up for anyone else the DS wont get its IP address from a Linux DHCP server for some reason.

Hey danbhala, any insights into how you got yours to work? I have a Netopia wireless router and I keep getting error 52000, that I have to check my DHCP settings.

It should get its IP automatically, right?

I finally sorted it out. I had to enter everything manually, but it's now working perfectly and it's well worth it.

    If you're using a Netopia (I've a 3347NWG), here's what to do:

Go to your router settings in your browser (http://192.168.1.254/). Click wireless and enter your Wireless SSID as stated here. Now enter your WEP key on the DS. On the DS, choose not to auto obtain an IP address, and enter an IP starting with 192.168.1.*, less than 192.168.1.253 (for example, 192.168.1.228). Put in 255.255.255.0 for subnet mask. Now, here's where I made the mistake: You don't use the gateway as listed in your router settings, you use your router's IP address as a gateway (this is listed as local network IP address on the main page).

Now just put in your primary and secondary DNS servers as listed on main page, and you should be ready to go.

New to this page, and so I'm a bit lost.. :( My 'lil bro wants one for X-mas, and I'm just wondering how reliable they are in Ireland - i.e. is it the sort of thing that I'll have to spend X-mas morning pissed off over because it can't be easily set up? We have Eircom Broadband, but not wireless, so he's looking at the USB Connector. Suggested needed ASAP!!! ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 51 ✭✭badrobot

Apparently it's very easy to set up once you have the USB connector.

You just pop the USB connecter in your computer, install it, then run Mario Kart DS and there's an option to connect to the USB connector and get online.

Looks much easier than just using a wireless router (unless it's on Nintendo's compatible list) anyway.

i got error message 51099 ,:( ,,but i think i found the problem,,,i have been told that it could be that my router is blocked and stoping my ds from connecting,,, does anyone know how to unblock the router..????

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 51 ✭✭badrobot

On the Netopia settings screen, click Firewall, turn it to Low, and if that doesn't work, off. You may need to restart the router.

You should have a firewall set up on each of the computers on the network, in which case turning off the firewall on the router itself won't pose a significant security risk.

It's possible you're filtering connections by MAC address, but if you haven't messed with the router settings you won't be, this isn't on by default.

Our routers are nearly identical, so I doubt that's the problem.

For an IP, Try 192.168.1.219 or something. What I was trying to say is you can randomly change the last 3 digits of the IP as long as it's below 254 and more than 2, I think.

i did my best trying to get this thing to connect and still no luck:( .Man this is headwrecking  .im just going to wait till the wifi connector becomes back in stock in a few places and get that!!:D---

Hey. I'm using a 3347WG modem and I'm also having issues. I was getting the 'Unable to find an IP address' error. Now I'm getting the following error after following your instructions.

    Error Code: 52100

Connected to Access Point, but unable to connect to the server. Confirm connection settings and internet availability.

My firewall was set to low (was medium but had same error) and it was restarted.

I'm using the IP Gateway, Primary DNS Server and the Secondary DNS Server addresses from the home page on my router. Any ideas?

Tempted to just buy the USB thingamabob.

If you're getting that new error, you're nearly there. I think you just have to change your gateway address: it's not the gateway IP as listed on the router homepage.

Go to the router homepage, look down at the bottom where it says local network, try inputting the Local Network IP address as your gateway, that did the trick for me.

i think i fixed the problem, i had to change the transmission rate and a couple of options .
Read this if you have a similar problem, this can help you.(it comes from nintendowifi.com)
    1. If you have a multi-mode wireless router (802.11b and g. Pre-n, etc.), make sure your router is set to communicate using the 802.11b protocol. Some wireless routers have an option where you can turn off the 802.11b transmissions. The Nintendo DS uses 802.11b, so your router must be using this transmission protocol. If your router has a mixed-mode or multi-mode where it does b and g, switching it to do just b may be help.

    2. Make sure you have the most recent firmware setting from your router's manufacturer. We are finding people don't have the most recent version and this is causing many routers to not work with the Nintendo DS. Go to your router manufacturer's website to download the latest firmware.

    3. For some routers to be compatible with the Nintendo DS, the router's transmission rate must be manually set to 1-2Mbps. The transmission rate options can usually be found in the router's settings screens. You may need to refer to the router's user manual (available on your router manufacturer's website) if you can't find the setting.
Some routers list the transmission rate as "TX Rate."

If you have any transmission acceleration features (BOOSTER, NITRO, g Nitro, etc.), try turning those OFF.

    4. If the above setting settings do not work, there is one other thing you can try; set your Nintendo DS Connection Setting to STATIC IP. When you do this, you will also need to enter specific DNS information.

Here's how to find this information. Go to your computer's Start menu, select "Run" and run "CMD" (the command prompt). Type in "ipconfig/all", press enter, and look for the "IP Address." In the manual settings area of your Nintendo DS, add "10" to the number in the last slot and then enter this number in the manual settings of the Nintendo DS.

Included when you do the "ipconfig/all" will be the DNS Servers information you may need to enter through the manual settings on the Nintendo DS. If only a primary DNS is listed, use that number in both the primary and secondary slots of the Nintendo DS.

Once you've entered all of this information, test the connection (and keep your fingers crossed).

My game generally crashes after 2 or 3 races. It's getting annoying. Plus my only win so far wasn't recorded. Which sucks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,324 ✭✭✭chrislad

So bloody annoying. Each tournament is 4 races. The games ALWAYS hangs in the 4th race. It's not my connection as it's not being used elsewhere.

Found this thread while searching for help getting my DS online. I have a Netopia 3347W Router...Tried all the tips mentioned here but am still getting stuck with Error 51099. The only two possibilities I could see hindering me are the 802.11G vs 802.11B setting, and the router's transmission rate. Does anyone know how to check/change these setting with this router - Did not see anything on the router settings page.

As far as I know, the 3347W is only 802.11b, and not g, so that's probably not the problem.

I'm using a 3347NWG, nearly exactly the same apart from the fact that it has 802.11g, and I didn't have to change transmission rates or anything, and I haven't a clue how to do it.

    Sorry :)

Is anyone else having problems with the game crashing out on the 3rd or 4th race? It happens at my house, and my girlfriends house. Both have the eircom Netopia router.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12 Koji the frog

try the solution i found. it might work with your router as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6 Q Dawg

That thing happens to me as well when it crashes out.it ALWAYS happens as well.10 races,0 wins,0 losses,0 draws.and most of the time im winning.its driving me mad.any ideas?

and yes.....i got the eircom wireless router and followed the settings so thats working but still crashes out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,324 ✭✭✭chrislad

I checked the router and I didn't see anything about Transmission Rates. I am talking with Netopia about it at the moment, so I'll let you know how I get on.

Follow that link to a T. If everyone else(including me) can get it to work it means you are doing something wrong

Followed all that exactly - and still can't get anything but error 51099.

I got my Netopia free from Covad, maybe the ones Covad send out are slightly different?

I have a 3347 from eircom and only ever get error 51099, my ds can't even see the access point. I have it working with an apple airport express, so I don't think its a wep or ip problem really. The router's listed on the nintendo site as working, so I dunno what could be wrong.

*sigh* everyone has problems (time to add mine)

i'm using a usb wifi dongle with my cable dsl to connect with my DS.

after setting the two up and my DS says it detects the connection, my cable dsl just stops working and i have to reinstall it from the beginning :grr: i have no idea whats wrong.

Suppose sony would be more used to getting their devices online.
Still no luck with my DS going wireless and since i have a mac, can't get the USB thingie.
*Sigh* I guess i'll have to go to a hotspot :(

true but sony hardly revolutionised, or introduced, new technology when they stuck the "scan" button in there. the hardest part of getting my psp online was typing out my WEP security key (infinitely easier to type with ds mind you)...

Yeah I get that as well. I've a Netopia 3347NWG. It seems to disconnect/freeze almost exactly 10 mins after I get on to the network.

They say lowering the speed to 802.11b speeds should solve it but the 3347NWG can't do that (at least, I can't see anywhere on it or it's software where you can control its speed).

I think my only hope is a firmware update from netopia.
