Ok I am close to finishing a gym I have been working on in North Frederick St (straight up o'connell st) that was formerly "New Dimensions" and also before that "Body Systems".

We are trying to think of a good name that is obvious to what the gym is like and catchy.

I personally want to call it "Big Micky's" but people who dont know my name might get a bit confused...:p

A bit of background about the gym so the name will suit, it is essentially a bodybuilders gym with old no frills sturdy machines. It has just two bikes, no treadmills, for cardio/warmup.

It is mostly dumbells and free plates with the dumbells going upto 70kg and even some of the very old 50kg plates!

We also have a good size area at the back for legs with a free squat rack, plate load hack squat, calf raise, leg extensions, plate load leg press and a hamstring curl.

We also have definitely one (maybe 2 if we have space) punch bags and a speedball.

The gym itself is in a basement so just "The Basement" was another especially imaginitive idea...

Any ideas appreciated and if we do pick a name that was suggested by any of the boards members that person will win a years free membership.

Why not call it "I'm advertising my gym for free thanks to boards.ie"?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 826 ✭✭✭vibrant

Sounds like it's gonna be Testosterone Central, no matter if you call it that or not.

    How about "Jocks"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,001 ✭✭✭Mickk

Yea the eastern europeans and alot of blacks are really big into training properly and will appreciate it. It will be very similar to powerhouse gym and a bit closer to the city centre. Hopefully it will be good

The Temple - in honour of Dorian's gym. I'm pretty sure there isn't another one in Ireland and you couldn't copyright such a generic name.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,001 ✭✭✭Mickk

Thats a good idea easygainer but its a stonesthrow away from the temple theatre (where I actually worked on the front door for 2 years) and even tho its been closed for three years everyone round there still knows it as the temple. You would get to many people askin for directions to the temple and stuff...

    Iron Works

You want something simple and manly really.

Per Spire is clever definitely but real men dont perspire they sweat buckets. I think a name like that might be a bit puffy for lack of a better word. No offense. You really need to steer clear of anything that could ever be rhymed with anything like that. Long term it'll stick regardless who trains there.

The word iron in the title really says all you'll ever need to know about the gym. And it'll attract all the wannabes. Highlight the Works part and have it more of a statement that "Iron actually works" more than any other workout equipment. It can be part of your personal training scheme too. A class a week showing how iron can "work" for any specific need. teach em power cleans and some OL's and you might just attract a heap of rugby wannabe who'll think you make em the next BOD

IRon Works is Kinda old school too and everyone loves old school regardless whether it "works" or not

Think of how easy the flyers will be??

Come let us show you how iron can work for you whether you sport is rugby, soccer, gaa or just getting toned.

    :D

Ok, so far most of these names make it sound like you all pop into The George afterwards for a quick "hows your father".
As for that perspire logo, err a big boner in your graphic will attract a certain type of person I reckon.

You want something with no other connotations but does exactly what it says on the tin
    "Heavy Lifts"
    "Direct Power"
    "Max Reps"
    or something simple like that.

Mickk.. when will this gym be opening?? id be interested in training there as i want to start bulking up and the location would be very handy for me on the way home from work...

as regards a name.. cant think of anything at the moment.. im having a bit of a Homer Simpson day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,001 ✭✭✭Mickk

So far I think its between:
    The Iron Works Gym
    The Basement Gym
    The Bench Mark Gym
(or if we try to appeal to a more mainstream audience) Perspire Gym

I think hopefully it will be open the first week of december

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,513 ✭✭✭BrianD3

I vote for Iron Works followed by The Basement. Words like Iron, Basement, Garage etc. are good to have in the name as they'll give the impression that it is a hardcore weightlifting gym. Which it sounds like it's going to be.

for some reason I really like the Dublin City Sports Club (DCSC). Sounds traditional and old school. If it was marketed as a serious. Kinda homely or something!! Sounds more social also when its a club or serious body builders who will get to know each other...

going by your description I'd have suggested something with a vaguely East European no frills feel like "Dynamo" or "Sparta" or "Saturn".

.. or "Stasi", "K.G.B." or even "The Gulag"

    or maybe not :D

    "Mickey Dynamo's"
    "Dynamick" ;)

    must stop now...
