For me the mainstays would be :

    Bill Steer - Carcass
Anders Björler - At The Gates
    Johnny Marr - The Smiths
John Squire - The Stone Roses

From time to time I'll have a few players who I'm really enjoying listening to and hearing what they do e.g. Vini Reilly from the Durutti Column at the moment, but those four are the ones the inspire me to play better all the time.

I think im a tad different from the bunch as i've been playing guitar for 11 or so years now, but havnt had any influences :s By that i mean, ive always tried to make sure i have my own sound, and ive never tried to mimic other peoples sounds (big mistake, its effecting me now im not as versatile as i want to be). Its only in the last 2/3 years that ive started to take notice of playing styles and accepted influences and its simply because of QOTSA.

Billy Gibbons (i have a real ZZTop Key Chain on my car keys!!) The chaps a legend.

Mark Knopfler is good too imo, i've paid him some attention, but only because i was told to from my guitar teacher. I have respect for him, but i wouldnt want to go into that style, or let it influence me much..

Conor McGoren (old mate of mine whos name i probably spelt wrong lol)... heard him playing out side of a mutual friends backgarden when i was 8/9, made me want to play too!!

Josh Homme is (imo) The most creative chap on the planet - so he would be my only real influence for sure. For the last 2/3 years ive been listening to more and more stuff from the dessert sessions 1-10(11/12 out soon!!), kyuss, and anything qotsa related or can be linked to qotsa via 6 degrees of kevin bacon haha. Every time i hear Josh playing it blows my mind - not the complexity or technique(or lack there of), but for being able to put the right riff, in a style that just hasnt been done before. So, the only person i can see ever being a real influence on my guitar would be josh homme, simply because unlike most guitarests, you cant taint him with the one style brush. He has a box of tricks for every style, and apon hearing it it can only be related to him. You know its josh when you hear him - thats why imo, he is my only influence.

Other people who would influence my bass playing (ive started playing bass)
would be the bass player from Death From Above 1979, and UB40!

    For Bass:
    Lol Tolhurst - The Cure
    Brian Ritchie - Violent Femmes
    Mike Dirnt - Green Day

I like to think my sound would be a nice mix of all three :)

You just can't beat Tom Waits!

http://www.rekordsrekords.com/main.html (the ending track on 7+8 is so ****ing funny)

The dessert sessions is the only way to see how josh and every band tied to qotsa has evolved. It starts off 1-4 mainly kyuss, and then starts to include PJ Harvey and loads of other guests. 11/12 should actually be done by now. The dessert sessions also has loads of kick ass songs like Avon, hanging tree and so on recorded low qual, Avon actually had different lyrics and went by another name(cant remember)... Thank god josh's lyrics are being used in 'todays' version. most of queens stuff like 'millionare', sung by Mario Lalli, who does a more bluesy/not sung form the throat version(the origional). There are tonnes of SWEET origional versions on the dessert sessions.

If you think you know queens, if you think you've heard it all, think again! Without the dessert sessions you know nothing! So many great versions of songs that later were put on albums. Alot of it is just them jamming, making weird songs, experimenting - the albums show you how to do it, and gave me and my band an idea of how to approach music in a relaxed, productive way and not to get hung up on sounding like another band, the key being to make it your own and not worry about the 'rules' of music; you have break a few eggs to make an omelette! :v:

The dessert sessions is another thing that inspired me when i say 'josh homme'.. Simply because if you see the ranche they recorded in, its not far from anything you could set up at home.

Mark king - I dont think anyone slaps better
Nick Oliveri - (Come back, its not the same!!!)
John Paul Jones - no explanation required.
Flea - Despite his sloppy technique he's still excellent
Krist Novoselic - It was him that made me take it up in the first place

Guitarists I like to think have influenced me are:
    Adam Jones (Tool/The Melvins)
Blixa Bargeld (Birthday Party/Bad Seeds/Einstuerzende Neubauten)
    Neil Young
Roland S. Howard (The Birthday Party)
    Kevin Shields (My Bloody Valentine)
    Lou Reed (Velvet Underground/solo)

    Bassists that have influenced me:
    Paul D'Amour (Tool)
    Justin Chancellor (Peach/Tool)
    Mark Chung (Einstuerzende Neubauten)
    Peter Hook (Joy Division/New Order)
    Scott Reeder (Kyuss)
    Martin Mendez (Opeth)

As well as these playing influences, artists like Einstuerzende Neubauten, Merzbow, Throbbing Gristle, Coil, John Cage, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Swans, Sunn O))) and The Hafler Trio have challenged the way I think about music and about song structure. I mean it's all well and good if you're listening to a guitarist play something impressive but I like it when a musician uses something non-musical to make music. Like using an electric razor on a guitar or a jackhammer or weird frequencies.

    Slash, Jonny Greenwood, Van Halen.

I've been playing a lot of Seahorse lately, I feel so ashamed. It's good for playing "I'm playing lead and rhythm at the same time and I love myself" type playing.
