wow - quality has taken a big jump from the last challenge. Good work everyone.

I like the new display app as well, nice one rymus and anyone else involved.

Just one small quibble about the new layout. If your entry meets the 'no side longer than 800 pixels' suggestion, can it not just be displayed in it's original size? I kept my one to the right size, but it was automatically re-sized and came up pretty crappy looking. I realise it can be changed with the drop down menu, but I'd say most people would just fly through them all without bothering to do that.

Other than that though, good work! I like that you can now show your settings along with the photo.

The standard is mush higher then usual. Then again, to leave a shutter open at night usually gets nice results. However, I like 12. Very nice! However I think it could have been dramatically improved in PS.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,651 ✭✭✭Enygma

12 is nice, I don't think it captures the theme as well as number 5 though.

    I really liked 2, 8 and 10.

Gutted I wasn't able to enter this comp, been camera-less for a few weeks. Waiting on my new 20D which should be here this week or next. Looks like it would have been a tough competition anyway!

Just a thought.

Its a gud idea, also maybe if u could vote for the pics u thinks should comes 1st, 2nd and 3rd by awarding points, 1st= 3points, 2nd= 2points, and finally 3rd 1point. Its just a suggestion. would love to here wat you all think!

    Welcome:)

I know where you're coming from. However, please keep in mind that there's no real prize, and leaving the competition so open encourages involvement from everyone. Some photographs may be lacking in comparison to many others in any given competition - but their inclusion will lead to feedback, which should help the users continual progress.

As for the split-voting idea - it is a good idea; but somewhat more difficult to implement from a technical p.o.v. using the current methods..

wow, theres some really good stuff there, some fantastic colours!

how about in future, instead of posting a poll I simply anounce "Youre all winners!" Does that have enough feelgood sentiment for everyone?

Was between 17, 2 for 5 for me.
5 got it in the end, but I do think it could have been cropped before submission. But that's just my opinion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,084 ✭✭✭dubtom

Just for future reference( for me) how do you include the tech or exif data that some of the pics have when sent via email. I tried to figure it out when sending for 7 but couldn't, in the end I forgot to include anything:o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

the pic should have the exif data in it.. unless it's been edited with a program that strips the data.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,396 ✭✭✭✭Karoma

It's input by the camera (See whether/what ver. Exif it supports).
It's lost usually by photo editing software..
You could modify some of it via something like Exif Pilot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,878 ✭✭✭whyulittle

2 got my vote. Along with 5, it's something different. 12 is very strange looking. It looks very staged, like something you would see in a film where they have stopped time! Very cool.

It also looks like about 4 of them were taken abroad?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,084 ✭✭✭dubtom

I resized in PS and save as a copy, what's an alternative.

I think the way its done at the moment is great. Some great shots, I didnt think the standard would be that high.

Dont really like 5 that much doesn't do it for me... 12 is my fav.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 183 ✭✭fester

:( i can't believe no-one voted for 7 - does it not say motion? I'll have to try harder next time

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,435 ✭✭✭eas

    hey fester -

if it's any consolation I really like 7.

I think it shows more thought/creativity/preperation than most of the others. The lighting is v.good, exposure looks spot on , really like your choice of DOF. I think compostion would be a touch more interesting is the group of cards where slighly more off center, but that would be nit-picking.

added - I think it shows motion, but not as much as the others....did you try it with a slower shutter speed?

    anyhow, well done.

Thats it's exactly all that is.. You are giving him cosolation compliments. Lame tbh. If you actually like the picture fair enough, but it seems as if you are doing it for the sake of it. Thats just seems that way, imo.

    Hi,

Great photos I think. However I would quibble a little and not give points for originality on many of them. Leaving the shutter open and photographing moving bright lights accounts for almost half the submissions. Even my own (no. 12) is a cliche.

I liked number 7 as well, but couldn't bring myself to vote for it, and voted for my own ;) The colours in No. 5 are extraordinary. No. 8 too, well worth a mention.

Shrimp, I'd be curious to know what PS could do for mine. Any tips?

    Dedalus

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 183 ✭✭fester

    thanks for your input guys.

12 i think is the best. Must be a rare enough photo opportunity and even so everything on the technical side is perfect (composure, shutter speed, timing).

8 i think could have been the best. If you had the background as it is but the 2 people were in focus, i think it would have been a winner. How you'd achieve that, though, god only knows. I really like the atmosphere in this shot though. (that wouldn't be georges st arcade would it?)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,645 ✭✭✭Shrimp

Dedalus, your photo is brilliant. It catches the scene perfectly. I feel I am there. I'm making up stories for each of the 'characters' as I sit and look at the moment. I love the expressions and actions of the people.

The kid is caught just as he is bursting forward, laughing and enjoying the mayhem of the moment. That is typical of how a child acts in mayhem, they tend to laugh and see the comical side. Perfect. The old man(near the center) looks like he's trying to back away from the water. A perfect contrast to the child. The woman on the right looks like she's getting some water to cool off.

The view of the camera is great, like one is surveying the goings on. Nicely shot. The composition is good, one thing I may like to suggest would be a rearrangement of composition(see picture below).

    12Edit.JPG

Click here for edit without labelling.

Thank you Dedalus05 and fester for mentioning my photo(No.8) That was Georges st arcade, I actually have that photo in my gallery(see sig).

If I wanted the people in focus and the background blurry it would be pretty much impossible due to the lighting. If it was at night, I could take a flash(the people would be imprinted on the image) then move forward(so the lights would streak). The people wouldn't come up as a blur because they aren't radiating much light(not enough to come up on cam).

Another way I could have done it would have been if I took two photos, and edited them together. But to be honest I don't think either of the methods would have been possible as I didn't know those people and couldn't just get them to do what I wanted, and it wasn't night time in order to do the first of the two options.

Thank you guys for the interest. I appreciate it!

    Thanks Shrimp. Fascinating insight.

It was taken at Universal Studios in Orlando, and that hydrant is running all the time to create the illusion of a hot day on the bronx.

You obviously recognise talent I was not aware I had. Had I staged the photo I would have left the background and the kid, and removed the woman at the hydrant, and the guy in the middle. Two compositional points you see as strenghs in the photo I had wondered about photoshopping out :) But now that you mention it, I have to agree.

Interesting what you have done with the plant, and with the contrast particularly - it gives the water spay a lot more life. Though I thought the kind of doctoring you did with the plant was against the rules (also I only have PSP and don't really know the ins & outs).

Anyway, yeah I had guessed George Street Arcade in your photo. It's captures the feeling of the arcade very well. Its a busy place, with plenty of movement between in the aisle between the stalls on one side and the shops on the other.

    Denis

I'm just glad to get one vote! It means that someone else out there likes your work.

I put the photo on DeviantArt and within 2 minutes I had a lovely message from a guy in NY saying it was great.

Don't get bogged down if you get no votes or comments here, just aim for more votes the next time, a great way to improve!!

    hey Shrimp

I dont understand what your saying here? Consolation compliments? I gave my honest opinion of his photograph. You may be in the habbit of making things up for the sake of it, but I'm not.

The consolation is that I like his photo, if that matters to fester it should be up to him to say, not you.

    thanks

right, it seemed as if yuo were saying it only because he said that no one voted for his pic. Ah well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,435 ✭✭✭eas

nope, just becasue i didnt vote for his pick (or any others) doesnt mean I dont like it.

I like a few of them a lot, but in the end I voted for my own ........I know it's not the way it should be, but I think I assumed that everyone would vote for their own? maybe not........

a couple people have mentioned that there is not a whole lot of skill involved in taking these types of shots, I'd like to disagree. Of course anyone can set a camera on a tripod and keep the shutter open for 5 seconds, but the same could be said of any type of photography : I don't think it's fair to the people who entered the challange to generalize like that, anyhow, just my point of view.

I agree it's not in the spirit of the challanges............anyone else out there willing to confess? Ease your guilt, it feels good. :D

Sorry Rymus - I know you are probably sick of 'suggestions' but I feel this is a valid one.

The images for this month are split over two pages. 1-12 on page 1 and the rest on page two.

Images on page one have an average view of 92 times each while images on page two have only been viewed an average of 61 times each.

I would suggest that for future challenges that all photos are displayed on the same page or at least make it very visable that there is a second page to view.

Anyone else any comments on this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

thats the way the photo gallery script is setup and in this case, I dont have access to modify it. at some stage I'll be setting up coppermine or something similar myself

You on page 2 as well slumped? :( I was going to mention it but I didn't want to be giving off more.

It is a valid point, I didn't realise immediately that there was a second page.

BTW Rymus, if you need a hand with hosting or gallery setup I don't mind lending a hand or server space or whatever.

We could also do something similar to the Weekly Assignments on fredmiranda.com
