    And what's 24 backwards?

    SPOOKY!!!

This is going to be all over the place like hot cakes before long. There'll be a lot of happy Lost fans tonight, but the prises could be a lot smaller as a result.

[edit] Only 298 match 5 winners, unbelievable [/edit]

Someone explain this to me? What has the lotto got to do with lost?

lol.. friend of mine saw it and made the point that the people who played the whole set of numbers for fun must be really pissed off by the fact it was 24 not 42...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 583 ✭✭✭^CwAzY^

Jesus!!! that would piss me off if I had played them (Which I have thought about doing before lol) 1 number difference between €341 and €1,350,000

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,816 ✭✭✭Calibos

The fact that it was the lost numbers that would have gotten me a match 5 prize instead of the jackpot would not piss me off any more or less then the other 3 times I got 5 numbers. ie its always a bit of a pisser but no more so with the numbers coming from Lost.

If I had played the lost numbers I'd be more pissed off that so many other people did the same as me and used the lost numbers meaning that instead of the usual 50-80 people who get match 5 each week meaning a prize of 800-1200 euro, there were 298 match 5 winners this week meaning the match 5 prize was 'only' €350.

Is that €341 paid between the 298 people or is it €341 each

    Hi guys,

My net is painfully slow the last while, have trouble getting most pages to load, can anyone give me a brief outline of what the numbers mean in relation to Lost?

I've only watched the first 12 episodes, but the numbers still mean nothing to me, so if there is something that equates to a spoiler in the explanation, please warn me? :)

    Thanks.

No spoilers to specific episodes unless the title explains what region or if there's spoilers. If you want to find out Google "Lost Numbers"

If you want to wait you'll find out in episode 18 series 1, co-incidentally entitled "Numbers"

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 583 ✭✭✭^CwAzY^

MobileInfantry: Just watch the rest of the series it's more fun than googling for a quick answer :v: :v:

steveland: It's €341 each which still sucks in my opinion compared to the
    $114 million that hurley won
    :D

I'd say many a Lost fan will have almost soiled themselves with fright when they saw the "4" and "2" on that last bouncing ball.

I've made a link to video of the actual draw, but I don't want to post it here for obvious reasons. However you might be able to get it from our cousins on lost-forum.com.

wow hehe didn't know the 24 was the last number out.. btw I don't think lotto draws are copyrighted the same way Lost episodes are :v: :v:

Its a conspiracy... The producers of the show paid the Irish lotto to help boost sales. :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 401 ✭✭Julesie

Jeez that gave me a fright last night alright but being a statistics student i inevitabley had to kill the fun by finding out exactly what the odds of it happening were. (im aware im setting myself up for a fall if my calculations are wrong but here goes anyway)

I leave the bonus ball out of my calculations entirely.

Total Combinations of 6 numbers available 5245786

Chances of getting 5 out of six numbers = 1/24286

Weeks since "numbers aired in the US" = 37

Approx # Irish lotto draws since then = 74

Chance of 5 of the "numbers" appearing like last night since they first aired = 1/328

Which makes it a little less exciting and also suggests that playing the numbers isnt very profitable in the Irish Lotto.

preety freaky except for the 24 even if it is 42 backwards

i dont see how the odds are as good as 1/328... surely with the odds of getting 5/6 numbers are 1/24286 then you'd have to multiply it by the amount of combinations 5 numbers can have which would put it somewhere up in the millions?

I can't see the problem, lotto results are available for free, there's no ad breaks so there's no reason that downloading the clip would hold as much of a problem as anything that usually shows ads.

The Lotto relies on people buying tickets as opposed to advertising so fire away

Where are you studying statistics? You are well off in your calculations

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 999 ✭✭✭cregser

^Thats why I hate statistics, I always get a different answer to everyone else. Here's what I got:

102,080,160 to 1 chance of matching 5 numbers with 42 balls.
1,417,780 to 1 chance of matching those 5 numbers in 74 lotto draws.

I've heard that you've got more chance of drowning in a bucket than winning the lotto so I'd say my odds are more accurate... maybe.

i drowned in a bucket once...

The probability of winning getting all 6 numbers from 42 balls is:

    5,245,786:1

The probability of getting 5 numbers is:

    5,245,786:(6x(42-6-1)) = 5,245,786:210 =
    = 24,980:1

or in bookie terms 24,979/1 ("24,979 to 1")

I did the math and came up with the exact same results as julesie except for the chances of the 5 numbers appearing in the lotto since lost started being closer 1/329 instead of 1/328 but that's probably just due to rounding/truncation differences.

Care to post up your calculations? because to me at the moment you're just plain wrong and making a bit of a fool of yourself
