the pic onthe web site is a bit sqashed, there is a better pic in their in store leaflet, its a more slimline unit like the one I got there awhile back except it hasthe added feature of playing nero digital video files, see here
they have added €10euro to the price mine was €59euro....still a great unit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,421 ✭✭✭Doodee

so it plays divx files then?

[Edit] just checked that site, it does indeed. deadly. Giflfriend needs one of these.
    Thanks lads.

The one lensman linked to is totally different. The Lidl one here is a Silvercrest Player.

I'd like to know if it plays DivX - anybody got any idea ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 624 ✭✭✭lazygit

im not sure.. the one i got from Lidl a few months ago was a Silvercrest Player with a 7/2 card reader and it playes divx and xvids.. but it says it on the front of my dvd player.. and the picture on the lidl page for the linked player is to bad quality to see..

totally different !! in what way ?
forget about the name badge, (eBench KH 6507) or (Silvercrest KH 6507) seen here http://jl.web.free.fr/silvercrest/images/pub.jpg it's the same unit. the new one lidl are selling is the (Silvercrest KH 6508)...this new unit differs in two ways
1..the 7 in 2 card reader has moved to the right hand side of the unit.
2..it can now play nero digital video files (mpeg4)
I suspect that the KH 6507 model only needs a firmware change to allow it
    to handle Nero files also.
Both units play Divx movies and all sorts of extra goodies can be found here

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,196 ✭✭✭deadl0ck

Fair enough if it is the same unit. I'll get one if it has DivX, it's just they look like 2 totally different units/brands.

How do you know what one it is (just curious) ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,316 ✭✭✭✭the_syco

To be honest, the picture here:
    http://www.lidl.ie/ie/home.nsf/pages/c.o.20051121.p.DVD
    looks like the picture here:
    http://www.lidl.be/be/home_fr.nsf/pages/c.o.20051122.p.Lecteur_de_DVDDivX_avec_lecteur_cartes_memoire
    all squashed up.

Also, look at the price difference!

You can see the model number in the pic (KH 6508)
As I say they have made some cosmetic changes here and there
but the new (Silvercrest KH 6508) lidl have next week is 95% the same as the
unit I got in lidl a few months back for €59.00 (Silvercrest KH 6507).
the are a great player with an extencive menu which allows you to
    alter/change lots of audio/video options,
*NOTE* with the KH 6507 some Divx movies tended to display frame
skipping during playback but if you run the movie file through this little program found here and click the "unpack bitstream" before you transfer the movie to CD/DVD it sorts everything out.:)

was the one you got definitely 59eu?

the ad they're running says 10eu cheaper than last time,
if you could post a scan of the receipt anyone buying maybe able to get one for 49eu this time :)

Lidl have had the (Silvercrest KH 6507) in stock at least 3 times in the last 2yrs, twice at €79.00 a last time at €59.00, their add is incorrect, this new model
(Silvercrest KH 6508) has never been on sale here yet,
maybe it's has been in other countrys and they are to lazy to alter the add just for Ireland.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,131 ✭✭✭subway

well if the 6508 is just a firmware upgrade then maybe theyre claiming that.
afaik the ad says 10eu cheaper than before not "last time" as i posted above,
so that could be where the price they quote comes from.

still if someone could post that recipt id say you could convice a manager to let you take one for 49 ;)

na, they are cute enough,...by moving the card reader to the right hand side and the change of model No they can claim it's a different unit, which still leaves
the wording of their add "€10euro cheaper then last time " a false claim.;) cause this the first time the KH 6508 has been seen here in Ireland:confused:

I don't think that you can upgrade your 6507 by flash firmware to support nero digital format.

Yep Lensman. You were right - It plays DivX.
    I got one this morning.

the KH 6507 is based on the Mediatek chipset (MT1389) I'd say this one the (KH6508) is the same.

Some of the new rips of Family Guy and Lost have to be "unpacked" before the play properly in this DVD player.

You can do that with this program, MPEG4Modifer: http://www.push-a-button.com.au/products/MPEG4Modifier%20with%20Batch%20Unpack%20-%20Binaries.zip

Has anyone tried that new KH 6507 firmware with the 6508 from Lidl?

This stuff required for 6507!!! not for 6508!!! 6508 should be ok.

    6507 - MTK 1389 chipset
    6508 - Zoran Vaddis 776 chipset.

Yeah, I thought the chipset might be different all right. I had a MTK based player, and the GUI on the 6508 is all different.

But the Zoran chipset seems to be better than the MTK one right?

There's no mention of our player on Google. Not even on the Silvercrest website.

I don't suppose there's any firmware updates for it yet.

can't speak for the Zoran chipset but the Mediatek MTK seem to be the
on of choice for people who like to develop firmware upgrades,add-ons,and other nice stuff;) ;)here
*STOP PRESS* just visited the lidl germany site here http://www.lidl.de/de/home.nsf/pages/c.o.20051128.p.Slimline-DVD-Player.ar15
the are flogging a Targa DVD player on the 28th for €49.99, seem's to have the whole feckin lot,!!!
    Nero Digital, DivX, USB connector

Yep. they are different. i would not say that zoran is better. a lot of stuff/mods for mtk. as i said before i've bought one player from aldi based on same zoran vaddis 776 chipset, it was nightmare. did not play a lot avis. quality even on dvd video was bad compare with my sony 730p. so brought it back to aldi. this one seems to be good. even if i not interested in such thing as card reader in it. so probably will keep it. will check how will it play compressed nero digital files.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,353 ✭✭✭radiospan

I'm encoding a Nero Digital file now to see how it plays.

Packed Bitstream XviD's play OK as you said. I was trying to play one last night off a memory card, and it didn't work. But they're perfect off a CD.

Picture quality seems better than my old elta 8883 too.

One problem, I can't seem to get seeking to work at all. If I try to fast forward through an XviD, it just goes back to the start of the file when I press play.

People have reported big problems with audio sync when playing DivX3.11 files on the other Zoran Vaddis 776 based players. I hope this one isn't the same.

Did not find any probs with audio sync last night.
Just as far as i understand one good thing card reader can bring - usb connectivity. but!
in case with 6507 that was only usb 1.1 compatibility which brings low speed to play only about meg/sec so movies on 2 cds will not play smoothly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,326 ✭✭✭lensman

it's the Targa DP-5200x see the targa site here
It may be based on the mediatek chipset, read iton some forum, can't find it now :( wonder will lidl Ireland offer it soon,..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,353 ✭✭✭radiospan

Ignore my problem above about seeking. I was pressing OK instead of Play.

Deesy, have you been able to figure out which of your 5-10% of avi/mp4's don't play?

Maybe you could open them with GSpot to see what encoding setting they have in common. It might be that they use XviD's GMC setting?

btw, found that mtk chipset does not support "macrovision off" feature, when zoran looks ok with it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,683 ✭✭✭daveg

For those looking to spend a little bit more on a quality DivX player check out the Pioneer DV-585. It's DivX home theatre certified and seems to play nearly anything that is thrown at it. Richersounds have it for sale at €150.

Failing that check out the links below for the best 100 DivX players.

    http://divxtest.surdvd.com/article.php3?id_article=60

Also DivX's own website that states which players are "offically" certified:

    http://www.divx.com/hardware/certified/products.php

Now I have a quick question. Xvid and DivX codecs are updated all the time and the latest (legal :) ) downloads will contain the latest codecs. Are the DivX players upgradable so your guarenteed your player will play the latest codec's?

better if your dvd recorder can do this,..;) the Liteon LVW 5005 can be modified

targa 5200x built on Sinplus chipset and as describe by some guys on it not realy better that zoran in 6508.
mtk is still good but does not support nero digital at the moment.
i'm staying with 6508 - quality of the picture looks very good.

Lidl are selling Targa DVD player from Monday 28/11/05 in some parts of mainland Europe, it's seems to be the best player they have offered so far,..it can play all types of media and video/audio formats, Lidl Portugal are selling the Silvercrest under the name of Leitor but it's the same unit.
    seehere
for more details, I think it's based on the MTK chipset, if so there is a lot of upgrades and modifactions around to enhance it ;);)
