Gift Grub not funny

Im not the driest person in ireland, but I really dont find gift grub funny at all. Ive chuckled at a few one-liners here and there, but most of what Ive heard is just moronic, IMO. I know lots of people that roll around the place laughing at what sounds like someone putting on an annoying voice while singing his own version of songs, and i really have no idea what the fuss is about. Am I the only one who thinks this?

    Personally I find it enjoyable.

Then again I have only listened to it once or twice.

Yeah I caught an ad for the cd on tele last night and the bit I saw I couldnt imagine sitting down to either watch or listen to it  wtf?? Is this a new thing or have I missed something?

I've heard a few. Not my cup of tea!

suprise suprise. none of the CD's are funny.

Nah I agree it's not funny. It's kinda like that show 'ThePanel' in that many people seems to find it hilarious.... but god knows why. Endless threads on Television complaining about how 'the women' on ThePanel are never funny. Sometimes I feel like asking 'and the other 4 eejits are?'

Not a new thing at all. Its on Today FM in the mornings on Ian dempsey's show.
Personally, I think most of it is very funny. Very cleverly thought out sketches most of the time

I bet you don't like "women" either

A lot of them aren't funny, but I must admit, theres a few that I've laughed me arse off at.

And i bet youre too stupid to know that attacking the person and not the post is possibly the worst form of argument. Whats your opinion on gift grub so?

I think its good, but if i didn't.. i wouldn't care enough to complain. Some people find somethings funnier than others.

I dont find it overly amusing either. Its not terrible though. I just dont have any time for it. I feel the same way about the office (which is supposedly awesome)...at least its better than apres match...that eamon dunphy character is repeated more times than father ted on rte.

    :v: :v: :v:

I used to think it was crap but lately its been very good. There is a guy they get on it from time to time, a country guy, very drole, he is hilarious. Dara O'Brín and Colm whats his face from the blizzard of Odd can be great too. Its an hour long but generally only 30 mins of it is worth watching. usually the start and the end.

On topic. Gift Grub is funny at times, especially when you listen to it as its aired at 7:30 am. Your a little lothargic from waking up and your trying to motivate yourself to shower and shave..... Sometimes it hits the spot, others it just doesnt. I wouldnt buy the cd.

I listen to them, it's interesting to hear what story they'll take up on next & what they do with it, but I rarely find them funny.
Like someone else said:- there's the odd one-liners that make me smile but never roll around the floor laughing funny.

Plus it bugs me that they keep playing some (the supposed funny ones) over & over again until you're sick to death hearing it.

Though I normally do like Radio J (is that what you call it???)
Think it's actually just the Cork accent that I find funny

Jose Mourinho loves the Gift Grub. :)
Waterford-born mimic Mario “Mossy” Rosenstock is the man being credited with proving that Jose Mourinho is not just a smug, super-cool, son-of-a-b but also has a functioning sense of humour.

“Fantastic... a genius” is how the Chelsea head coach describes the Today FM ‘Gift Grub’ skit artist’s uncanny send-up of the Portuguese.

After hearing the ‘Special One’ micky-take - based, in part, on Andrew Lloyd Weber’s ‘Any dream (team) will do’ - which he apparently plays for his delighted kids in the car, Mourinho invited the ex-Glenroe actor (“Dr Hanlon”) to Liverpool last weekend for a private dinner on the eve of Chelsea’s away fixture against Everton, as well as a kick-around with the first-team.

The nephew of the famous Irish poet, Gabriel Rosenstock, the 34-year-old’s successful sketch-writing and acting for the Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show led to a short-lived stint as the lead role in ‘I Keano’ (which he quit due to “artistic differences”) and now, if not quite a household name, he has a cult crossover hit on his hands.

Was he nervous about putting on a comedy show for Chelsea’s multi-millionaires? “I’m just hoping to God I don’t break Frank Lampard’s leg and put him out of the World Cup,” he said before heading over. Given the England midfielder’s goal at Goodison on Sunday, it seems the only bones Mario is a danger to are funny ones.

Its not even mildly amusing. gerry Adams cow impression made me smile for a millisecond. The rest are just feeble attempts at humour.

I think Aprez Match goes well with the actual commentators, the only reason I would watch soccer is for Aprez Match. I like their TV3 skits.

I wouldn't suggest going out and buying the DVD (I have  and I laughed :D ).

As for Gift Grub I think it works on the Radio, but I amn't a big fan of Ian Dempsey any more. I wouldn't suggest going out to buy the CD (I havn't but I might???)

As for the Panel, I think it is very good and since most of us are Irish we like to complain about the one think that annoys us about a particular part of something we like, so we are on at the Women.

I could imagine a DVD the best of the panel.

Personnally I don't think the Strawberry Alarm Clock is Funny and I never got it espically now that it has its best of CD.

In my opinion some are very funny but some i just dont get. I heard Ronan Keating doing a Guiness ad which was utter tripe but the Jose Mourinho one, I laughed me b****x off and played it again.

Gift grub isn't too bad. The ones I have heard weren't bad so far.

The worst parody or satire of anything that has ever been shown to the public is that stupid program on UTV with the digitaly animated politicians. It's so stupid!

    BBC NI did that.

I find probably 85% of the material on gift grub to be very funny.

Just a question: for people that do not like gift grub, what amuses you or makes you laugh? Something has to!

I'd have to agree. I mean - we're essentially discussing personal taste here. I hate Harry Hill. I love Phoenix Nights. Kilnascully has made no impression on me. Gift grub is patch but when it's good, it's a hoot. I think the surreal ones are the best - for instance the 7 RTE bods in the Taxi, Mary Coughlan (I think) talking about hoovering or Bertie trying to order a round.

What's most impressive, however, is the speed of the turnaround on some of the sketches. I mean - you have something happening on a Monday, and they're ripping the pi$$ out of it on a Wednesday. And in fairness, the poems done by Michael D on a friday morning are very clever.

To respond to the OP - each to their own. A cursory glance will show that you're certainly not on your own, but I've a notion (not indeed that it matters a whit!) that you're in the minority!

Something has to? That makes it sound like Gift Grub is the only form of humour in the world, which it is not. I singled out gift grub as being one thing that lots of people find hilarious, but it doesnt matter how often i listen to it, i dont find it funny.

Thats your opinion. You are entitled to it but I find it very funny the majority of the time and I know quite a lot of people that do also.
AFAIK, the Ian Dempsey show has one of the highest ratings on the radio in the morning, so they must be doing something right.

Not as bad as the drivel on fm104 in the mornings, thats for sure

Jeeze, im glad i read this thread coz i was thinking about buying the new Gift Grub Cd. Its so funny on the radio, i don't see how the Cd is so crap then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,082 ✭✭✭Tobias Greeshman

Just bought the cd the other day, the cd is not crap, if your a fan of gift grub then your gonna find the cd pretty good. Well I did anyway, but then again what everyone finds funny tends to vary.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

The CD is definitely not crap. Anything that knocks Westlife off the top of the charts gets a gold star from me.

Anyway, I'm a fan, and I bought the CD last week. Alot of it is very very funny, but unless you listen to it on the radio regularly, you might not 'get' some of the jokes (Ronan getting phrases wrong, for instance). I imagine someone listening to it 'cold' (having not heard GG before) mightn't find it as funny as the thousands of regular listeners.

    Just my 2c.

I think the scripting is just not humorous a lot of the time, and it does get sickening when they repeat it. However what I find funny is the way Mario has an uncanny ability to sound exactly like some characters, eg Brian Dobson. You have to admit, he has talent!

I like gift grub and hope to buy the CD during the coming week. I think Killinascully is very funny, also the Panel and Podge and Rodge. I cannot see anything amusing in The Office but each to their own.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,088 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

Can't say Gift Grub does anything for me (the one exception being the Mourinho sketches) - most of them drag on so long that any humor in them is very quickly lost.

I prefer FM104 in the morning myself. Much funnier all round I think. :)

(Incidentially I HATE Killnaskully (Pat Shortt in general). Podge and Rodge (and RTE's other puppets - Zig and Zag, Dustin etc) just come off as ignorant and unfunny to me, and the Panel has it's moments until they bring out the guests).

ah c'mon lads it is very funny..granted some mornings are funnier than others, but its the best thing to give you the oul lift in the morning on the way to work..
    plastic sheeting. priceless
    eddie hobbs
    ronan fair play keating!
micheal noonan "do you know what you remind me of?"
that said I would nt go and buy the album coz I think its more of an in the moment thing..still just heard there a while ago that its knocked westllife off the top spot and that has to be a good thing!

And as someone texted in this morning, is that one group of impersonators knocking off another?

I think Gift Grub is very funny, most of the time. The one character I hated was Liam Lawlor, he had an irratating voice that just went through me. Plastic Sheating, Dobbo, Mary Coughlan and co always crack me up. Did anyone hear Brian Dobson almost say Plastic when introducing Pascal Sheahy on the news one evening? They mentioned it on the radio one morning.

If you don't like Gift Grub then it's very easy to avoid it, just listen to 2FM or some other radio station (or none at all).

And for all the nay sayers, don't forget "Dry your eyes mate", one of the best parodies of all time, and within a day or two of that game aswell.

Have to say i quite enjoy it myself. Lately i find M & 50 trolls (98fm at 8.20) put a smile on my face. Some of the things they come out with.

I don't really find it funny either..
Used to like FM104 back in the day when Joan used to be on it, but its not really that funny anymore.
Don't like The Panel or Killinascully either & can't understand anyone finding Dara O'Brian remotely funny! I can't abide him..

I agree, Gift Grub ain't funny. But as long as it keep Westlife off the top of the charts then I'm a happy bunny.

Jaysus they are BRUTAL! Couldn't think of their names. Had the misfortune to hear them a couple of times and promised myself never to turn to 98fm again.

Gift Grub is funny more for the accuracy of Rosenstocks impressions rather than the writing. Although he does come up with some hilarious situations now and then.

I have to say that I don't hear GG that often, but i have liked what I've heard (especially the "I like the way I move" by Mr Bill "Renault" Cullen). Podge & Rosge aren't my cup of tea, but I used to love Zig & Zag (anyone else remember them being pulled off air for their rendition of "Old McDonald had a Farm"???). The panel has it's moments, and both Dara O'Brin and Colm Murphy (dat's dem, isn't it?) are both fantastic when you see them doing live stand up. Blizzard of Odd is, to me, Odd! Dustin was a PITA, and Soky a poor replacement for the Z brothers.

All that said, each to their own. None of them would survive if nobody liked them; we just all have different senses of humour.

If we didn't, wouldn't life be dull............
