Typical RHR?

    Hi folks,

Quick question for you.... I did 45 mins of cardio (finishing about 2 hours ago), but I still feel like my heart rate is high. I took my pulse, and its between 80 and 85 bpm.

I'm a pretty fit guy, and know that it should be less than 60...

Is it a sign of overtraining, or something else? Any advice?

(I've trained 5 days out of 7 in the last week, 3 weights, 3 cardio - this is my usual regime, and I've been doing it for a year now, with a full week off every 3 months).

    Thanks in advance....

You take your RHR first thing in the morning. Or last thing at night. No other time is relevant.

    From the Polar website:
    Resting heart rate (HRrest)
The lowest number of heartbeats per minute (bpm) at complete rest.

    Hi,

It depends on what you have been doing for the 2 hours in between. If you’re fit as you say and have been sitting at a desk for the 2 hours then this is not good and you’re not a fit as you think.

One of the must import measures of fitness is the recovery rate after exercise. If your training for example at about 150 bpm I’d expect an average fit person to be down to 100 – 110 after about 2-5 minutes and around 80 after 10 – 15. This is not exact as it depends on if the 150bpm was maintained for the full 45mins or was there a tapering down in the BPM’s.

But thats the worrying thing, PJG, I am fit. I do regular cardio (steady runs and HIIT). This morning I did a 40 minute jog at 11kph, which definitely isn't fast. I've done this many times before with no ill effects. Its just this morning (since leaving the gym) that I'm feeling a bit strange.

I didn't keep track of the BPMs this morning when on the treadmill, but I did do a 5 minute cooldown after the jog.

if the heart rate is still up and your not feeling well get it checked out.

A high rhr does not mean one is necessarily unfit. The head of the AIS who was a marathon runner had a rhr of around 80bpm compared to his competitors who had rhr's of 40, iirc he still won a world or olympic gold.

We all know that as you get fitter you assume the rhr gets lower and that this is down to the exercise - probably is but has yet to be proven scientifically.

You are anxious and therefore slightly stressed about the high rhr which in turn will keep it up or even elevate it slightly more. Is 80-85 normal for you or was it always much lower?

HRRecovery and HRReserve are the key to assessing fitness levels apart from vo2 analysis.

All available in peak performance centre in sanydford.

No idea why more people do not get their vo2 max tested regaulrly as it reveals sooo much and all aerobic and anaerobic exercise is taken to a new level

My HR settled down by Friday evening and has stayed down since. Don't know what caused it. It just freaked me out a bit because there is a history of heart trouble in my family (my uncle died from a heart attack 2 weeks ago, and my dad has a leaky valve).

Anyone know if the vo2 max test is done anywhere in Limerick?
