Came into work this morning dying with a hangover, decided to treat myself to a roll from spar to help soak up some of the alcohol... Got to the deli counter only to be scowled at by a girl behind the counter.. I asked for chicken and some salad on my roll and went off to get a drink, got back to the office, starving, dying for my roll, opened it up and it was the most miserable looking thing id ever seen in my life, id say there were about 5 tiny pieces of chicken among the pile of lettuce leaves she gave me.. And I was charged €4.20 for it  Id just really like to know what exactly my €4.20 was for????? If I bought the bagguette on its own it would be 60c and I certainly dont think the 5 tiny lumps of processed chicken and a few lettuce leaves where worth 3.60??? Or maybe it was for the friendly service* I got??... Im by no means a tightarse and I have come to terms with the fact the we get ripped off everyday in this city but thats just taking the p*ss  and I still have my hangover :o

Bring it back, then. Ask for the manager and tell him you're not satisfied with the amount of chicken in your roll. Not sure if you should wait for the hangover to abate first or not.

they usually charged by the number of items you get.
I see them making breakfast rolls in my local one, if you get the works (egg, sausage, bacon, pudding, hash) they cost a fortune. I just get a roll and JUST bacon, they put loads on so as not to seem scaby, if you are getting "the works" you would get 1 or 2 bits of bacon, I get a good 7 or 8 on mine so I end up with a roll that costs about the same as if I made it myself, buying a roll and cooking bacon. Most of these places do not seem to appreciate the value of their ingredients.
A centra near me charges €11 per kilo of hot food. I see people filling up on beans and chicken drumsticks and wedges. They also sell bacon and chicken fillets! these cost more than €11 per kilo per cooked weight (moisture loss), people are paying for chicken bones instead of chicken fillets.

Why don't you just ring the manager anyway and tell him/her, and also tell them about the "friendly service"!

The managers not much better tbh... he always looks like hes about to have a nervous breakdown, thats when hes not round the side of the shop slugging coffee and chain smoking... and the girl on the deli wouldnt have great english so theres no real point in going back over to her, dont think shed really give a toss anyway..

funny, i was in spar yesterday afternoon, we head down if the canteen slop is particularly bad, so we're there quite often.

i got a thai chicken, stuffing and potatoe salad sambo for €1.65, must have been a mistake!

never thought i'd see a bargain in spar (donnybrook).

........ in another spar tale, i nearly got poisoned with a tuna roll i got in hilltop spar in raheny.

i brought the fcuker back, manager offered to refund me, i said you're gonna have to do better than that, so i had me a little shopping spree, filled up a basket with some of spars finest produce, including a nice bottle of red.

don't take no $hit from these mo fo's.

What was in the roll that nearly poisoned you? Was it a foreign body or just spoiled food???

Do you know how much it costs to erect a broiler shed in Brazil or Vietnam? Not to mention the high quality feed, freezing, shipping, antibiotic costs. These things don't come for buttons you know.

Hope this helps your hangover ;-)

While we're on a rant about rip off sambos,
Avoid the Esso 911 shop on the Navan Road ,feckers charged me €4.35 for a sausage & cheese roll, with only 1 tiny sausage lost in the middle of the big roll.
On asking politely for another sausage I was told I would have to pay 90cent more..... Arse to that!
Let it be known that never again have I or will I darken their doorstep again.

Dont talk to me about 911 shops.. I got a roll in rathmines one day and the girl didnt even wrap it in paper like in spar, she just threw it in one of those long paper bag things and I dont take butter so there was nothing to stick the stuff to the roll and by the time I got home the contents of my roll was on the floor of my car :( I was livid

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,191 ✭✭✭oneweb

€4.20 just about covers the pay for the one behind the counter for a half-hour it takes them to yap away about Anto an' how he came in locked last night and bla bla bla while throwing bits of this and blobs of that onto a stale lump of bread. Can't stand getting sandwiches made in most places.

    It is what it's.

I'm about to hit Centra, westmoreland street for a roll to eat in my Maths lecture.
I'll report back on it later.
But tbh, they tend to make fairly decent rolls.

I think bad deli food is the norm for all shopping centres like Spar, Supervalu, Mace Etc!...
I get my lunch in a supervalu store everyday and the staff are so ignorant and lazy!!! I know someone who worked in the same store and supposidly they put all the slow people behind the deli because they can't use the tills!!!!!.. Anyway not sure how true this is but they can't feckin make sandwiches to save their lives!!!
If ya want a job done properly... do it yourself!! That goes for sandwich making too!!! :D

think that might have been the one I was in last year, asked for a breakfast roll, was given a warm baguette sealed in a plastic bag for some reason for a fiver I think. Got out to the car and ripped off the bag only to discover a stale roll, no butter etc with one scabby limp piece of bacon and that was it! Last time I ever went in there, complete rip off!

I feel your pain, I cant belive how much we get ripped off by these places. It really really pisses me off. I mean I get irate about this. The biggest thing in my life (My number 1 nececity apart from O2) is food. I am hypoglycemic, if I dont eat I turn into a cranky mother plucker, in fact there is no talking or being near me. I eat a huge amount compared to most people, and due to my metabolisim and my fitness level I am hungry about two hours later. Anyway..... There are a few places like this, and there is one shop I would like to name as being the BEST VALUE FOR ROLLS?SAMBOS and BEST SERVICE around.

Centra in Dun Laoghiare shopping centre. Whatever you want in your roll for €3.20. Every day I get a roll with 5 or 6 fillings that I can barely finish. It is crammed with fillings and €3.20 every day. They also do a mighty mighty breakfast roll for €3.20!

Most of the other places around charge you an arm and a testicle for an extra filling. In fact there is a centra a few huundred meters away from the one above where I ventured a few weeks back to get a breakfast roll one morning. He put rashers, sausages and pudding into the roll and was finishing it. I asked for the egg, hash brown and mushrooms that were on display too (bear in mind there was an add in front of the counter with a picture of a breakfast roll for €4.00 with all the ingredients above in it), and I also asked for cheese and ketchup. No word of a lie, I got the roll with a price of €6.40 (you can get the same one just up the road for €3.20).
I laughed and said "are you serious?" and I was told a breakfast roll is sausage, bacon and pudding. Anything else is 60c extra. Instead of arguing with the ignoramous behind the counter I left the roll on the counter and put the picture of the €4.00 breakfast roll beside it and politely told him that the add was false advertising and he should take the breakfast roll and shove it up his arse. Then I walked out.

Ive done that a few times, and eaten it in misery. Hunger & lack of energy directly related of course. You eat it and think "I'll feel better after this" but when you have finished, and you are tounging loose bits of the sambo thinking "that was completly unsatisfying" and you swear you will never eat from that place again and you will do your best to warn everyone about the rip off merchants......

GUIDE TO NOT BEING RIPPED OFF IN IRELAND
    1) Look at the prices before you buy, if you are not happy with said prices do not purchase there
    2) If you are not happy with your product price after purchase return it to the store where possible and then follow rule 1 from then on.

Remeber not to get angry with anybody when doing this as there is no point generally becaus ethe pricing policy is nothing to do with them. Even if it does being angry won't really do anything.

Went the other direction in the end, and ended up beside Pearse Street Dart Station. There was no chance I was going to go to Spar so I opted for the Westland Row centra (one of the best shops in the country imo).
I got a ham and cheese roll with a bit of onion.
3 slices of ham (reasonably generous), more grated cheddar than you can shake a stick at and just enough onion to give it a bit of a kick.
All in all a fantastic roll.
Only cost E3.65 in the end too.
Very friendly staff also. She offered to give me some more cheese and everything.

Well Im glad to hear someones belly is full and happy ;) But speaking of ham, I have also noticed in spar that if you ask for ham or sliced cheese on your roll they will actually take a knife and cut the piece of ham/cheese in half so that it just about covered the bread/roll??? I mean is it going to break the bank to just fold it in half and give u another slice for the other end of the roll??? AAAAAAaaaaaaargh

subway on camden street make the best rolls ever!

a close second is the spar on camden street, the deli in there is clean and the food is always fresh. reasonable priced too!

ive been eating out of them for the last 4 yrs and never had a bad roll

subway will give you a mean sandwich with LOADS of salad and meat for €2.89. There's a €2.89 sub everyday as a special, and even if you don't get the sub of the day they range from 3.50 - 4 euro for the best sandwich in Ireland. I gave up on Spar sandwiches a long time ago. Luckily I have 3 subways within walking distance of my job. Long live Jared Fogle.

Iv never had a subway sambo in my life, Im very tempted by the meat ball sub but just never actually gone in and got one and I walk past the one in Rathmines every day... I just cant see where they're going with the "Healthy" thing cause the sambos dont look very healthy to me.. meat balls and marinara sauce?? Tasty id say but healthy?????

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 387 ✭✭fischerspooner

well there's a healthy menu, no meatballs probably aren't the healthiest but if you had a turkey/ham sub with lots of veg and BBQ sauce or something that's pretty healthy. No I don't work for Subway.

Super Spar, I say. Always give a crap load of fillings, and it's decently priced.

As for the poster who commented on deli staff who cut the ham in half to fit the roll, yes they do it because they're cheap bollixes. I worked in a deli for far too long, and was told to only give the minimum amount of fillings. 2 stingy pieces of bacon and 2 shrivelled sossies. A little bit of chicken/ham/turkey and about 3 slices of tomato. And this would cost you the guts of €4? Don't go to..the one convienience store that hasn't been mentioned in this thread yet!
