Rang a friend last nite, let it ring out, and finally he answered it, but seemingly I woke him up. Now, I can't figure this bit out: if your asleep, why leave the phone on? It makes no sense to me.

plus i use it as an alarm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,382 ✭✭✭petes

Nope. Its on silent most of the time anyway. Only thing I use it for at night is as an alarm clock.

Well I leave mine on in case any of my friends get into trouble/ lost. Female ones really.

Got a call from a friend saying she was lost in some dodgy area with a bunch of dodgy people looking at her...

    Jumped into the car..

The only time I take my phone off silent is at night for the alarm. I leave it on vibrate all other times.

Yes, developed this habit from when I used to be on call over night. Sometimes though i set my phone to "bed" setting. It will jsut beep when it rings. So if i still awake I'll hear it. If i'm asleep i won't! ;-0

    For the alarm too.

Thought anyone I know would know better than to ring me in the middle of the night. I've never been woken up except by a drunken girlfriend.

by the way, most people don't know this but u can set an alarm on your phone and switch it off. It will turn it self on for the alarm.

    :v:

Yep I use it for an alarm too.

always leave my phone on in case of an emergency.

Did you know that if you turn your phone off, the alarm will still go off?? Never tried it though... I will now, just to see....

Set your alarm for two minutes time and then turn off the phone and you'll see...

As young Audge pointed out earlier, I always leave my fone on for fear of missing something.. don't really know what I'd miss but still. Both my phones are switched on through the night though I do tend to turn my work fone on silent thanks to some unwanted 6am calls from Cyprus earlier in the month! Silly Cypriots!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 333 ✭✭audge

Well if I am honest, I cant remember the last time I received some late night gossip, but there is always the chance, and I love waking up to a load of texts. My phone is nearly always on discreet though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,397 ✭✭✭✭azezil

Yeah I always leave it on, but don't answer calls after 12, and if i do... you'll regret it ;)

I used to get txt's at all hours of the night, don't mind that... if I'm really tired just put it on silent.

Like others, also use it for the alarm

*wanders off to test setting alarm and turning off phone*

Yeah I leave mine on all the time. Through habit mostly, plus I couldnt be arsed knocking it off every night (the mp3 player takes ages to start up the first time after the phone is turned off) or putting it on silent.

The odd drunken phonecall Id get is funny more often than not, so I dont mind being woken up by them. I used to have a habit of ringing a girl I ws going out with at the time whenever I was on my way home from a night out & she did it too. Havent really done that with anyone else though.

The alarm will still go off if the phone is off. Even if the battery dies in the phone, it will always keep enough charge so the alarm can go off (in nokias anyway). Great feature.

    yeh... alarm...

I knew you could turn nokias off and the alarm works, but does that work on Sagems? I may try, after my batter burger :)

Leave mine on for emergencies, amusing drunken calls and to use as an alarm.

Same reason we never would disconnect the landlane phone before going to bed I guess.
If someone tries to contact you and some ungodly hour in the morning, it's probably for very good reason (emergancy) or to express their undying friendship for you in a drunken haze.
You just cant take the risk and turn it off I guess...

Why, that's the same phone I have!

    Cool :)

(although I've never been woken during the night... my alarm doesn't even wake me up anymore, lol)

but thats why god invented text-messages

Mines always on. I don't have a landline so it's my only emergency contact number.

txt messages do not function while the user is under the influence... the alcohol vapour blocks any txts leaving the phone, which is why any good boozy buddy knows only a phonecall will suffice...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,082 ✭✭✭Tobias Greeshman

Yeah I leave mine on just in case of emergency. I'd actually get a bit paranoid about not having it on, in case I miss something (its a bit stupid, but I guess I depend on my mobile a bit too much). Use it as an alarm as well!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,644 ✭✭✭✭nesf

I leave mine on for emergencies and for phone calls in the morning. I tend to sleep odd hours anyways so I do tend to get calls while I'm asleep. :)

I too use mine as an alarm clock. Got on a plane once and turned the phone off. Half way through the flight the alarm went off. Desperately scrambling to turn it off. Some people laughed at me others gave me a look like I just shot the pilot.

I leave it on for all the reasons mentioned already and also since I sleep through the alarm quite a bit, for people to ring and wake me up.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

My phone is never off. I have a friend who always turns it off religiously every night but I'm the exact opposite.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,057 ✭✭✭✭Zebra3

Landline does be left on and mobile switched off.

TBH, my mobile is switched off at least 30 mins before I go to bed.

So no option for me? :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,483 ✭✭✭Töpher

I leave it on all night, but use it as an alarm clock. I have it set to beep if anyones trying to get in contact with me, so if I'm awake I hear it, if not - it doesn't wake me up. :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,598 ✭✭✭ferdi

its on vibrate all the time and i use it as an alarm. its on all night because i think being woken up by your drunken mates for a chat at 5am is always a good laugh

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 491 ✭✭*Lees*

I never turn my mobile off!!!..... If my battery has only 1 bar left.. It feels like the end of the world!! haha!
.... my mobile is an extension to my arm!!!
Anyway.... I leave it on during the night because I couldn't bare missing the tinyest bit of gossip!!... and I love being woken by drunken phone calls!... Its something you can laugh at the next day!

Always on. You never know when a friend is gonna need someone to talk to and a lot of my mates are currently travelling so I occasionally get drunken calls at all hours of the morning from friends I haven't heard from in months.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,702 ✭✭✭bounty_hunter

I leave mine on incase anybody needs to contact me in an emergency. I have in the past received calls/messages from distraught friends who may have done something stupid had there not been somebody to talk to.
I do put it on quiet mode though.

Got a call from a friend saying she was lost in some dodgy area with a bunch of dodgy people looking at her...

Sounds like something out of Warren G and Nates regulate :)

"fifteen in the clip and one in the hold
A-phex is bouta make some bodies turn cold....."

Anyway, I leave mine on so as I dont miss a call, god knows what you might miss
Unfortunately, when one of my mates rings me at 4am or whatever Im so half asleep talking that by the morning when I wake up I cant even remember what was said, or even if it was a dream.
Generally I dont get pissed off at being rang at all hours though, Im available 24/7 :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

always on as i use it for the alarm. didnt know the phone would turn itself on but i'll leave it on anyway in case someone needs to contact me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,618 ✭✭✭Civilian_Target

Usually off unless it needs charging. Forgot last night, and my mother phoned me before 8am. Was less than amused...

I used turn mine off at night but then my parents started leaving me in the house alone for weekends and I got paranoid so I left it on. Now I just never remember to turn it off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,315 ✭✭✭✭the_syco

plus i use it as an alarm.
It will go off anyhoo's. Even when its turned off, it'll still come on for the alarm.

    =-=

May leave it on, tho. Saying that, tho, people ring me at odd hours (like before noon:p).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,372 ✭✭✭The Bollox

no, I leave mine off, because the lads I hang around with like phoning ppl while they are pissed to ask the most idiotic questions. it's a great laugh when you are one of the drunken idiots, but not when you have been awoken to hear some drunk dude mumbling a stupid question.

I mean one time we rang up one of the lads girlfriends at 2:30 in the morning to ask her if she has any socially acceptable name(s) for her pussy! she called it, and I quote "I'm going to kill you" I never heard that one myself, but each to their own

Can't believe so few people know about switching off for alarm thing...

I reckon I can now claim one of Most Knowledgeable User of the Year or
Most Helpful User of the Year awards! :p:p

How do people not know that the alarm still works when your phone is off?

As soon as I get into bed I turn off my phone and it doesn't come back on till I get up. It ensures a good nights sleep. If there's an emergancy people should ring 999 and not me. If someone is dead - they'll still be dead in the morning.

I think its stupid to leave your phone on at night - the radiation causes nightmares too ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,541 ✭✭✭irlrobins

Again.... it will charge even when turned off.....

Works for Siemens. I only discovered when I was on a flight and the stewardess told me to turn my phone off as she could hear rining. I argued that my phone wasn't on - I'd already turned it off.

It was my alarm going off.:o
