The official site is up and the trailer is coming soon. It all looks sweet.

With this and the DVD re-release of Richard Donner's Superman II prepare to see Superman stuff EVERYWHERE in 2006. I'll be happy in a way, and sad that all my cool superman gear (caps, sweat shirts, key rings, t shirts etc) will be available in Michael Guineys.

Some fan trailers to get ya in the mood:

Question - is this new film starting the story from scratch or taking it from where the others left off?

I had presumed it was starting afresh but I think I read somewhere that they were setting it after the events of Superman 2... as in superman went away after that and then 'Returned' many years later as, erm, a younger person aparently.

Think I'd prefer a completely new story myself. This film will either be totally amazing or totally ****e anyway. No doubt the hype-machine will be in overdrive in the coming months, which never helps anything tbh.

Going on from Superman II. I'm going to ignore every piece of crap that people say about it before it comes out. I've seen all of Bryan's Blogs, the film looks good and I'm quietly confident.

I fail to see how that's going to work out, or why they would bother.

I'm sure (or at least I hope) somebody knows what they're doing. I still don't think there's been a better comic book adaptation that the original Superman movie.

There's a story link on the website, check it out.

Yea, did so. Still doesn't really explain how or why they're considering it a continuation of the first two films (which most of their target audience is probably too young to have seen anyway) aside from giving SM something to do before having gone away.

If they're just using it as an excuse to forgo the creation and back story then fine by me; but otherwise, for one thing, almost every actor looks younger than their 1979 counterparts and this will now be Lex Luthors THIRD time battling superman. Not to mention the power in the style of the first film which I don't think is going to be easily replicated -- even Superman 2 did a dodgy enough job of that (not to mention the other sequels) and that was part directed by Richard Donner. Judging by Singer's previous films I don't think he's up to that perticular task (where as if it was totally new I wouldn't be wanting for it)

I was never the biggest fan of the Superman movies. Even when I was younger. Therefore I'm not too excited about this.

I'm glad they're doing it this way.

I need another Superman origin story like I need a hole in the head...

It looks like they will actually be tying it in quite closely to the old films seeing as how they have a dead Marlon Brando playing the part of Durel again.

Park Posey is in this isn't she? I like her...

Well, from what I've heard, they're doing it this way because Superman I & II covered the origins and, currently, that's being covered in "Smallville". They don't want to contradict each other so much, so the movie's taking place after the current events in the series.

Im not too excited about this movie to be honest. Superman never really did it for me and he is probably my least favourite super hero. Ill prob still go see it but I wont be expecting much

Ah... I'm not too sure about this...

It all looks too heavily designed like Burton's Batman films.

I'd rather it kept the look of the original films and looked like it was set in the real world.... That Daily Planet building in the trailer certainly wouldn't look out of place in Burton's Gotham.

there re-releasing the 4 set next year to go with SR, apparently richard donner is working on Superman 2, trying to reincorporate the scenes he filmed before he was fired. Supposedly a way better movie than what was released.

What did you think of the trailer?, I was expecting more, but the last shot is soo cool, was waiting to see it since the picture from one of the blogs :D

monkeyfudge: Singer is kinda going for a 40s style metropolis, even the fasion is very old looking, I think they wanted to have metropolis as a city and not New York acting as Met like in the original films.

hmm.. best thing about that trailer is the 30 year old score and voice over :-/

Not sure about this Brendon Roth geezer at all, he doesn't seem authoritative or even old enough. And I agree with monkeyfudge about the style.. the old films worked so well because they were so believable, not styalised at all, the only extraordinary element being Superman himself (well, alright, maybe that wasn't so much the case in the sequels, but I wouldn't rate them much at all)

Even the flapping of the cape looks a little ****.

Ah well, not much to go on I suppose. Really hope it isn't poo.

Agree with pretty much all of that.

With regards the boxset, the only problem with it is that it also contains part 3 & 4...which are particularly hard to watch due to the shockingly bad special effects and cringe worthy script.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

Superman 3 had some pretty good effects.

The whole fight between Clark Kent and Superman was very well done for the time. I also thought Superman 3 was the darkest film in the series despite having so many comedy moments in it.

Number 4 had woeful special effects though... and what was up with Superman being able to repair the Great Wall of China by using laser beems from his eyes?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,937 ✭✭✭fade2black

It was particularly 4 I was talking about to be honest as I watched that again for the first time in years a few nights ago.

The rebuilding of the Great Wall....All the super imposing...continuity errors all over the place (in one shot Gene Hackman is talking but his lips are not moving)....Superman flying through the underground and no one even looks twice as he passes by..

    As for the script....

"Don't do it...the people!!" Oh lord.

Superman 3 had some pretty good effects.

The woman getting sucked in to teh machine gave me the shivers. Freaking scary as a kid!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,892 ✭✭✭madrab

i kinda like the 4th one, it was the third that never did anyhting for me

you expect a superhero to go up against a supervillian not a lucky nerd & a computer

I know the teaser does not show much, but I do think it looks a bit too stylized, to echo some comments here. That was Burtons mistake (and to completely ignore the lore behind Batman). Nolan's smart move with Batman Begins was to make Gotham seem like the real world, and to give a real reason as to why a guy would dress up as a Bat to fight crime, instead of presenting a wacky city where such stuff would be expected.

The same approach should be used with Superman, in my opinion. The villian is Lex Luthor, a corrupt, powerful individual, not some sort of alien or demon or monster. So, Superman should be the only thing that makes Metropolis unlike other cities (its actually based on Toronto, just in case you cared). The realism of the world should emphasise the extraordinary central character, instead of trying to put it in a context where it would be expected.

the teaser trailer is excellent but everytime i see a photo of him in the suit i cringe

I bought the box set at the weekend and I must say that Christopher Reeve looks as young as Routh in the first one. I think it's only because we grew up watching Reeve that we got accustomed to him looking older over the years and have this mental image of him seeming older because we were younger. The only thing I didn't like in the teaser were Routh's boots. Look a bit Nazi ish. Routh is 26 I think and Reeve was 26 when the first superman was made. Superman is supposed to be 30 if they go by the story in the original film. i.e. leaves at 18 and spends 12 years at the palace of solitude. Margot Kidder was 30 in the original so Bosworth is a good deal younger as Lois Lane but Kidder didn't look that old.

On another note. Anyone know when a longer trailer is coming out? It's only 6 months to release.

Here's a few more trailers of Superman returns. A few are obviously fan made. And some bits appear to be rough works by the production team themselves. Never the less there are some new scenes amongst them. Also a few bits are from the matrix rehashed for the hell of it by someone. There's a bit where missiles appear to be going around the world. This looks familiar. Anyone know if this is from the film or just added by a fan from something else?

Can anyone explain yet why there is so much new genesis footage being bandied about for this film, given that its supposed to be set after the last series (or so I gather)? Thats annoying me a little...

Is that the copy with the funky 3-d cover of Superman?

Cause I read it and I though it was a Preview of Superman Returns not a Review. I didn't see and 5 stars.

    Am I missing something????

Right this film was released in Sydney last week and i saw it yesterday.

First off let me say that i'm a real cynic when it comes to todays superhero films - x-men, spiderman, new batman etc, are all "meh" in my opinion with too much ironic self-referencing, totally crappy pace and one-liner cliched dialogue - ok Spiderman 1 was prety good. I never saw any clips for S-man Returns and didn't know what to expect at all.

    10 out of 10!!!!

The story is tight with tons of room for new sequels but without throwing that in your face. The actors are great. Listen, no-one can replace Gene Hackman as Lex but jesus does Spacey do it well - and he's been wrecking my head recently and all. Just the right touch. Lois is a great female character with plenty of depth and her kid managed to not be like 99% of kids in movies and didn't make be cringe with dumb pretentious acting.. a very likeable chappy. Whoever that bloke is they got for Superman, my god does he look the part, both as Clark Kent and S-man. He's got Reeveness all over him but has his own iconic appeal too.

Yeh sure the sfx are great.. thats a given these days so i won't bother commenting further. I don't give a toss about them is the story's good anyway and it defintiely is a great story with so many angles, so many homages to the first 2 superman films without being too wink wink knowing or ironic. The pace moves along just right as well with never a dull moment and plenty of edge-of seat action and lots of suprises and just the right amount of laughs that aren't there to take the piss.

The general reviews are right - this ones a winner and it takes Hollywood a lot to impress me. About time. Enjoy!

I saw it last week and thought it was very good, I wouldn't give it 10/10 but maybe if I was generous I would give it a 9.
Your right about the kid, thought he was really good and some of the scenes he was in were brilliant. The special effects were all really good as well and there were some pretty funny as well, I watched it with a US audience which was strange, they seem to laugh at so much stuff that isn't all that funny and they all clapped at the end as well!!??
Overall a very good film and whatever you do, dont spoil it by watching some crappy version of the internet, you really need to see it on the big screen with all the sound as well.
