I think that list indicates why it would great to be a bookmaker . Only 3 people making a profit on a horse racing forum.

I think that's a little unfair Finnpark.

You must remember that scores are calculated at SP, in reality most people will take an early price or use exchanges thus increasing profit. Over the last two weeks I had a 14/1 shot backed into 5's and yesterday had an 8/1 shot backed into 11/4, I took both at much bigger prices but for the purpose of the competition only got the points at SP.

Secondly entries have to be in before the racing starts so there is no oppurtuinity to watch the first race to see the going, draw advantage, horse behaviour before race, betting patterns etc.

I would think in reality a lot more than 3 people off this forum would make a profit.

I (and seemingly many others) always do worst during September and October.

For flat racing, it's coming to the end of the season, the ground changes a lot, horses that have been on the go a lot become over-the-top and don't perform to their best, form often gets turned around, some horses are run to lower their handicap mark for next year and there just seems to be more shock results overall.

As for the jumps, it's the start of the season and the fitness of a lot of runners is unknown. It's a generally difficult period to consistently find winners.

The thing is, that coming up to this period every year, I know all this. I try thinking outside the box and taking all this and more into account. I try to become even more selective and reduce my number of bets and I've still had shocking results every year during this time. In fact, this year, my Sept+Oct losses wiped out my Jan-Aug profits and more.

Next year I'm gonna crack it. Next year!

Your right there, definitely a good time of the year to watch the money, I've had a few in the last week or two that have been well backed and won. The same happened with my selection yesterday although on a smaller scale, Into the Shadows, it was 5/2 when I picked it went off 13/8.

Cheers sjones, had a nice winner there yourself I see. I had a nice little earner on Bold Bishop, I wish I had of backed him last night though when I was looking at the race, he was nearly 14/1 on Betfair at the time. He really stood out today carrying so little weight.

Cheers man, Ballyfitz stood out for me in the Newcastle race, very similar race to the one that it won 19 days previously, and was only carrying a little penalty, at 13/2 it was the best price bet in the race. I probably shouldn't have followed Buena Vista with the Break from July - but it raced very well. I'll be watching out for it's next race.
