Hi, im thinking of getting a laptop for college. I'll be using it for internet, word processing/excel spreadsheets, listening to music and some light gaming.
I can get a laptop through the college from dell(a latitude D610) with the following specs:

    Pentium M 740 1.73Ghz, 2MB Cache, 533Mhz FSB
    60GB 5,400rpm
    512MB 533Mhz Non-ECC DDRII Memory (1*512MB
    Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional
    64MB ATI X300 graphics
    Wireless,Dell 1370 802.11 b/g
    Removeable 24x DVD/CD-RW
3 years on-site next business day gold support

    for about 1430 inc VAT.
I can upgrade to 2GHz processor for 185,a 7,200 rpm drive for 50 and a DVD RW drive for 40.
You guys think this would be okay for my needs? Would you recommend availing of any of the upgrades? Ive read here that buying extra memory myself is cheaper then a dell extra. Speaking of memory is there much of a difference between 533 MHz and 400 MHz memory?
If anyone thinks im getting ripped off and could recommend a similar system for cheaper i'd be very grateful! Thanks

PS, sorry for the double post!!

For that kind of money I think you better have a look at my site before making your decision! It honestly seems a bit pricey!

    The D610's are solid machines.
Don't bother with the processor upgrade but defenitley go for the dvd-r/w.
Try the dell factory outlet, you'd get the same machine for a few hundred less.

Shop around would be my advice...

The spec certainly isn't bad, but by just looking at komplett for example you can get

    Acer TravelMate 4152LCi 15" XGA, PM740, 512MB, 60GB, DVD/CDRW, WLAN, XPP

    for 1,069.00 + maybe 20 delivery == 1089 euro

    Save yourself more than 300euro...
And that's not even searching much

Found a site called bms.ie. They have a laptop with similar specs at http://www.bms.ie/toshiba1.htm#SPM70. Cheaper too and better video card, think i'll go for this one over the Dell. Anybody agree?

Try acernotebooks.co.uk, they have a great range and a good searching tool. Very well priced and they deliver to Ireland
