Ok, dont know how many ppl already know about this so ,

I'm sure most of you are familiar with Skype.

Well babble is pretty much the
same Voip program as Skype except you can ring any landline in these
conteries (UK, USA Mainland, Australia, New Zealand and Europe) for free!

you just need a headset or something similar, register and dial.

There is no limits or catches. and no 1.7cent/min like skype.
Yet as ususal you have to pay to ring mobiles.

    Kewl enough!

Just went to register, and spotted a *Promotional Code* field — what's that about, I wonder?

    Me goes googling... ;)

    hehe

    I tried looking too:D
there is probably some credit on some headphones like the credit you can
get for skype on the Platronics headphones.

Similar to skype they offer a free limited service but if you pay then
you have the option of diverting calls, or you can have your own
    number and other options too.
I assume thats where they make their money.

I doubt there is any adware/spyware as they are a VoIP company and
including such goodies would not be a good way to get customers to
    take them seriously.

The only problem that I have found is the the program crashes the odd
time and it doesn't look as nice or as well rounded as skype.
But, its totally worth it, as it allows me to ring my girl in Spain for hours
    on end for free. :p

It says on the website that you have to subscribe to make calls...?? i.e not free

You just have to register, after filling in your info, download the program,
fill in your username and password into the program and start dialling.
I have been using it for weeks now.
    It is definately free.
Just rang my mobile and it didn't cost anything...

I'm going to check this on Sunday night and if this is true I am going to
give several people "happy" panic attacks!! :D

This is a great program, free landline calls but I just rang my mobile to test it, it works for them alright but after looking at my account details on the website it says that call cost me £0.12. Now do they expect me to pay for that or something?

EDIT: Does anyone else hear an echoing effect when calling someone?

Ah well, so much for the free mobile calls.
    not suprised to be honest.

I have heard an echo a few times during calls but redialling the call fixes
    that for me.

I dont know about the paying, its pretty stupid (on their side) letting people
run up bills without even requiring so much as a credit card number.

ok there has to be something going on with this how can they make money doing this it has to be costing them to call landlines. Could they be charging the person your calling for the call, like reversing charges ?!?

I could almost believe the land lines are really free but ther mobiles work too without having to give a cc no.

    I smell something fishy here.

I ring my girlfriend from babble and her phone (landline) can only take
incoming calls, so it would be impossible to reverse charges on that
    phone.

As to the part about the mobiles, when you enter a mobile number into
their price thing, it says the call will cost 15p/minute.
It would be interesting to see what would happen if I rang my girlfriends
spanish mobile for an hour or 2. :p

can you call Irish numbers? Every number i put in says "call failed please check number and try again"

Tried with 00353 also just 353 and then simply the phone number without codes..

[edit] nuvermind has now started working.. i called landline here and my mobile.. only problem is no one can hear me using crappy computer mike..

Skype is also free if you both are using it.

I've been using skype to ring Ireland for the last few months but I must give this a try!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,267 ✭✭✭Elessar

To dial a number you must use the international dialing code first, eg. 00353 for ireland or 0044 for england then the county number eg. 003531 for dublin etc.

You dont need to have another person with the program, you can call directly from your computer to a landline anywhere with it free, even mobiles (tho they're supposed to charge you for mobiles).

Its pretty good, mainly because it free.

What are the call charges in the opposite direction (i.e. somebody call your Babble account). They refer to a monthly subscription service (Babble On) but I can't find any pricing info on it. I'm assuming that's where they make their money.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,983 ✭✭✭✭tuxy

the only thing i can guess is that this is a promotional thing and as soon as they have alot of people using it they will require you to buy credit before making calls

Personally, i use Telestundt to make my cheap phonecalls abroad.
Only costs the price of a local call to ring and that's it, as you dial through an 1890 number.

I've been using this to ring the UK a lot, for the last 6 months or so, and it saves me a fortune, and there's no nead for any fancy gear, just a telephone. Calls to mobiles cost more though.

At the start I was sceptical, and rang eircom to check how much the calls would cost me, and they verified that it would be local call cost. Last six phone bills can't be wrong either. Seriously worth checking out.

I've noticed that o2 and vodafone don't allow the number to be rang, I'm going to ring them and find out why. We all know why, but they can't give that as a reason to customers.

but beware, only the access numbers starting with 1890 are charged at the cheap rate.

Na thats impossible they cant enter you into a contract without your permission and no phone company could charge you for it. Even if it was possible they would have had to set up deals with every phone company in europe usa and oz everyone of which would be loosing profit for ever person using this competing service by bypassing their tarifs. Plus assuming you didnt give them your real number (which i doubt many people signing up would) they cant get the info from your ip addie without a court order. Only way i see them being able to charge is if they reverse charges on the recieving call and even then when the bill came for the recieving party they would simply have to say they never agreed to charges being reversed and would get an imediate refund and apoligy. Seems this is truly something for nothing so i say leech em while we can cause this has gotta end soon it must be costing them a fortune (remember they still have to pay for the call) so id bet its just a pr stunt to lure people from skype and seeing as their site says something about ending some sub thingy in dec then looks like theres less than 2 weeks left.

    So how is it free?

The conspiracy theorists naturally believe that there is some 'con' to the free aspects of the service. So let's clear upsome common misconceptions:

Zone 1 relates to UK, USA, Australasia and European landlines. It's FREE and will remain Free until well into 2005! The intention is to keep this service free... ongoing.

All other destinations have been free for the trial phase of the service using beta software. The plan is to commence charging for these destinations within the next two weeks and this will be advised before being switched on.

For the chargeable destinations, it is believed that the rates will be by far-and-away better than Babbles competitors, and certainly a good deal when compared to ordinary home phone line rates.

There are NO hidden costs and it does NOT cost ordinary phone users more than their standard tariffs to call people on Babble.

Babble is NOT going to retrospectively bill people for calls that they have already made. (how could they?!)

Babble is not going forward with the subscription scheme - all current subscribers will have their subs credited to the Babble Balance IN FULL as a 'Thank you' for their faith in the service. The replacement will be an automated Top-Up scheme - regular payments go straight to an individuals account balance. Top-Ups can be stopped at any time.

Yes, there is an Acceptable Use Policy which will be inforced against the tiny few who seem to feel a 'free lunch' is a right. Sorry folks but this is a genuine service with free elements that Babble want to be available to all.

Calls between Babble users are free and will always be free.

Babble is a commercial service. Babble wishes to fund the free calling elements through a membership scheme which will be introduced in the New Year. The aim is to take a small fee which will cover free calling across the board. What to express your opinion? Use the feed back form on the babble.net website on the contacts tab and let them know.

Babble is backed by BON.net - a leading development and service company in the telecommunications market. BON.net is privately funded, owns its own network and has been in business over 4 years.

The official launch of the service comes in the first week of December with many more goodies.

does anyone else have this problem. I've no idea what to do.
