There's a sticky in the PUI forum on this.
Junk food is a common and decent substitute. Training to get fit is good for motivation.
Moving to a new location can help I think because you may get away from a lot of the "triggers" that make you crave a smoke.

Get a stress ball to squeeze, drink lots of water (I dunno why but it keeps your mouth busy and it's good for you).

    Read Allen Carr's book.
Avoid Chewing gum + Polo mints -> It maintains addictions.
You be fine after a couple of weeks
Don't have just one (I fell into this trap)

Trigger, there is only one way to get rid of the craving: Don't smoke. It is smoking that gives you a craving not the not smoking. If not smoking gave a craving then every non-smoker would have one. When you smoke you don't get rid of the craving, you just start it over again. It'll take a while to get rid of it, but if you want to, you know what to do. So if that craving is really bad and you really, really, really want to get rid of it: DON'T SMOKE!

If you get a craving try holding your breath - the carbon dioxide build up fools your brain into thinking you are smoking...

I gave up 2 weeks ago and haven't caved yet either! I'm very proud of myself!!! not finding it as tough as I expected, but think I'll have put on a load of weight!! keep snacking.. but trying to eat "healthy" snacks.. ie grapes etc. and yeah chewing gum.. know it's still a habit but heh.. it doesn't stink or cause cancer ;) ok by me!

also, stay away from areas you used to go on fag breaks.. they are serious danger zones.. instead go and make a cup-a-soup.. not coffee.. cos that'll prob remind you of smoking!

best of luck.. hope u make it.... be strong!!! :D

I put on a bit of weight when I stopped smoking, just like you described above. Try doing more exercise than you're used to. It'll compensate for the snacks and you'll start to see yourself able to breathe and stuff after moderate exercise. Healthy snacks are good too. Glad to see you found it so easy to quit.

well I dunno about easy.. but I've been meaning to for a long time.. and it just came to naming a day and sticking to it. I've been so tempted.. just one just one... but so far have been good! having said that..haven't been out with friends from home since.. and that will be a real test.. as we used to spend most of the nite outside puffing awaay 'n catching up :( that I will miss... cos I know I can't go out and not smoke! don't have that kind of will-power yet!!

yeah, need to get my a$$ in motion now soon, joggin round the green... woo hoo! prob make it 1 min and then collapse!! :o
