Fedora Core 3

Fedora Core 3 is now available from Red Hat and at distinguished mirror sites near you, and is also available in the torrent. Fedora Core has expanded in this release to four binary ISO images and four source ISO images, and is available for both x86-64 and i386. Please file bugs via Bugzilla, Product Fedora Core, Version 3, so that they are noticed and appropriately classified. Discuss this release on fedora-list.

Debian is SEVEN!
But I'm not sure if you need all of the four cd's of Fedora.
Just do a simple install and install what you want off the web.

Debian is aiming for a different market altogether though. FC3 is more or less in the mandrake/suse/ubuntu frame (ie consumer desktop).

Mandrake's had 4 CDs for a long time (I think 10.1 official has 5). Suse comes on a few DVDs these days, though that might be a professional version.

Good point, but the Mandrake Community is 5 or 6 cd's.
So having 4 install cd's is nothing new really.
Fedora is just a growing distrobution with more and more people using it, thus more call for more software and more languages for that software.

Fair point on mandrake, I suppose I mean I prefer a minimalist model - but it doesn't really make much of a difference

TBH, I never found it necessary to use anything beyond the first 2 Debian CDs, so I started only keeping two. Then I got fed up of that and just have 2 of the netinstall CDs. One for stable and one for testing. Haul the rest of the stuff down off t'internet.

4th CD is rarely used [I have never performed install where needed it, and some of my installs have installed a fair variety of things].

Sorry for dragging this one back up, but has anyone tried Fedora Core 3 yet? I'm downloading it as I write (the DVD version and the 4 rpm iso's).

I want to use it for a HTPC that I'm going to build within the next few weeks.

<edit> I'm getting it from the esat.net ftp mirror. It's coming in at 52.9KBps. Just in case anyone else wanted to get it, it's nice and fast. </edit>

I have. I grabbed it over Bittorrent and put it on my spare hard drive. Its pretty damm nice.

There's been a lot of changes under the hood, so to speak. Some things that weren't enabled by debault in FC2, such as DMA, support for 1gb and more memory and SE Linux, are now and it really makes a difference. The whole thing runs a whole lot faster as a result.

Gnome 2.8 and KDE 3.3 are nice as well as they're both big leaps above the other. Also, most of the attached programs are updated above their FC2.2 versions. Biggest changes I've seen so far are Firefox replacing Mozilla as the default browser (no bad thing) and the adddition of Thunderbird.

Slightly off topic and all....

I'm thinking of doing the RHCT/RHCE in the next few months (2-3).
I use SuSE mostly, so I'm going to have to wipe a few machines and
install RH. Would Fedora Core 3 be suitable??. I know the exam is based
on RH Enterprise 3, so how close is FC3 to this, or would I be better
off using RedHat 9 instead.

I've used RH9 and RHEL 3. They /seem/ the same to me. Also, both came out around the same time if memory serves. I'm pretty sure the kernel versions differ though. I think RH9 uses 2.4.1. Can't remember what RHEL3 uses, but FC3 uses the 2.6 kernel AFAIK. Not sure what's involved with the certification.

Can I ask where you're doing it? What's involved? A linky would be nice. Sounds like the kind of thing I could convince my boss to pay for

I'm thinking of getting this, but first I must repartition my harddisk so I don't lose all my data. Oh and download it of course. Ah college internet speeds.

seeing as some people have installed this (and as some are thinking of downloading it) I was wondering what people thought?

I have several problems with FC3:
1) it will only install / on a primary partition. this is rather annoying when you already have a couple of OSs on the hard drive already.
2) theres a truckload of services started by default, slowing startup to a crawl.
3) the kernel sources aren't supplied with the OS. you'd think with 4 cds they could at least include the kernel sources...

these coupled with the usual crippled multimedia functionality has meant that I'm in no way enthusiastic about installing FC3 on any more machines...

anybody else have similar experiences?

Just another 38MB for the kernel source if you need it. Probably a pain if you buy the CDs and don't have broadband though.
Services are easy enough to switch off.
It sounds a bit unreasonable that the OS can only be installed on a primary partition though.

Debating installing FC3 at the moment, anyone here running the 64 bit version / familiar with the performance boost gained over 32bit systems?

It's a bit of a stupid question I suppose, but I'd rather install it on the 2600xp pc here than the 3200AMD 64 if there's only a small difference, since it'll never be my main OS.

(Windows = my crutch)

This may be no indication, but my opteron box in work (running enterprise edition (i.e. 2.4 kernel)) runs like a DOG. If you do install the 64bit version....could you let me know how you get on? Could be a useful way for me to argue my way to a new OS

Well it comes with a German version of Windows, so going to have to wipe it anyway. I'll download the FC3 64bit dvd iso tonight and give it a bash in the morning (assuming GLS bother delivering it :rolleyes: ) and let you know - tbh, I was just looking for an excuse

All installed, and running perfectly.

Khannie, I installed the 32 bit version on the 2600xp and whether it's just the CPU upgrade, or the 64bit arch I dunno, but the 3200 is noticeably faster.

Thanks, I downloaded the dvd .iso, twice. It was corrupted both times, so I got in touch with the admins and they fixed it. In the mean-time I got fc2 and installed that. I'm a /little bit/ sorry that I did, because FC3 recognised my ATI 9100 IGP (Pundit-R box) at install time, and FC2 wont (a.k.a. I don't have the skill to make it) so I'm using the vesa drivers.

Overall though, it has a very nice polished feel to it. KDE is really nice (only used gnome in the past).

synaptic + apt = massive improvement over poxy rpm dependency resolution. I just wish the apt repository had more in it.

I'm never ever buying an ATi card again. I don't care if they release another generation like the 9700/9800 series which are better than Nvidia The drivers (windows included) are just a joke.

Does anyone have any idea when they'll see fit to release Xorg 6.8 drivers? I'm really liking FC3 so I'm not reverting to FC2 for the sake of getting my ATi card to work. Even if it is sickening having a 9700pro and not being able to use it for anything meaningful. I'm really looking forward to subscribing to Cadega and dumping windows for good but ATi are making that impossible.

Sorry for the rant but FC3 is a great release, and it's pissing me off that this one thing is preventing me from fully enjoying it!

I had heard that the ATI driers worked better with FC3 than FC2...

just install FC3 on my laptop
1.
my first problem /sbin/loader would hang before install
fixed by typing linux acpi=off
2.
after install seemed ok until I tried to play music cd
/dev/cdrom permission errors
3. sound card does not work
AAAAAA this worked with all the previous version of fedora
so did a quick google search and found out the package udev package needs updating
http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/udev/
install new rpm then reboot
now the soundcard is working and cdrom
SO if you or using Fedora core 3 make sure you do the updates

hmmm, i just installed it and it doesn't even see my uber-generic external modem, never happened before on countless other distros
maybe i'll try the udev update ...?
