There will naturally be overflow between here and college work forum. If it's a blatant work issue it'd be better in there as it should get more foot fall. That said if there's anything UCD specific about it then this is the best place.

    See below for Resources:

    also standard rules:

    Advertising
    - Topics/posts that contain this will be both edited and locked. If you wish to buy add space, contact advertATboards.ie .

    Flaming
    - Posts containing personal attacks on another user will be edited/deleted.

    Racism
    - Topics/posts containing such will be edited/deleted accordingly.

    Porn
    - Topics/posts containing such will be deleted on sight.

    Off Topic
    - Posts that stray off topic will be edited/deleted, depending on their relevance to the topic at hand. Topics that are not UCD related will be moved/deleted.

    Caps Lock
    - Any post that is in all upper case will be deleted, because it does my head in.

If you continually break these rules, it will result in you being banned from the board.

If you see anything that breaks these rules that I have yet to act on I'd appreciate if you used the "Report a Post" feature. It makes my job easier.

If you are banned on a temporary basis it is YOUR responsability to inform the mod who banned you of when your ban has expired - and be civil :).

If you have any complaints about a moderating decision contact me(Truckle) privately or peachypants or post on the Admin board. Any post complaining about me on this board will be locked.

For general queries or reports please contact myself (truckle) or peachypants.

www.itucd.ie - the UCD computing services website

www.ucd.ie/stuweb - Past papers for exams. (login is your student number as username and your date of birth in DDMMYY form as password)

ucd.boards.beers@gmail.com - If you want to be kept up to date on the nights out we arrange then send your details (email/mobile number or both) to that address.

If theres any other resources you reckon are worth having in the list post them on this thread and i'll check back every so often and add them to this list.

Right, Just putting up a short sticky about posting on the UCD board in its current climate.

There have been a fair amount of bannings over the last couple of weeks due to people getting worked up to the point of becoming abusive when somebody is arguing with them.

    This has 2 effects:

    1. I'll read through the thread, see the abusive post, and warn or ban the person who posted it, regardless of how much provocation there was.

    2. (and thisis far more important) People will single out those they think they can get a rise out of, and dissagree with them in order to work them up, while still not crossing the line. The biggerr the reaction, the more of these trolls there'll be, and the threads will all descend into flamewars and be locked.

I've never been a fan of long term bans, I much prefer to reason it out with someone then unban them once its sorted, but the only way to keep things in orer here may be to give out such long term bans.

The alternative being I remain as I am now, reasoning with what I have issue with, and the users of the board can help improve the quality of the board by simply ignoring those who seek to work them up. Then the trolls will either grow impatient and earn themselves a ban, or give up and sod off.

I've left this thread open for discussion as I'm still interested in what everyone here has to say.

I think to be honest everyone has to leave their faculty loyalties at the door. Including us Arts Students. Fair play To Truckle for this sticky. We have two posts. ( Started by myself and peachy ;) ) That have turned into all out war and it really cant happen again.

    Totally agree.

In both of those threads people had taken it upon themselves to find some personal attack that quite simply wasnt there. This shouldn't happen and hopefully wont in the future. :)

The FAQ ares a fantastic idea and would be really useful, particularly at this time of year.

Yes indeed, i'll try and keep my comments in check in future. Which brings us to the possibility of having a 'playpen' subforum where we can abuse one another :D

hehe that'd be so much fun. A place where we can go to revert back to our primary school days :p

Maybe when the threads descend into the "my faculty is better than yours" crap, they could get sent there.

Isn't that the Thunderdome? Or Cuckoo's Nest? Or one of those. Those places can have incredibly abusive threads. Great to read. :D

Well folks, since uberwolf hasn't been online much lately due to home commitments it's been decided that another mod was needed. And, uhm, apparently its me.

Anyhoo, any problems or questions just PM myself or Truckle as usual.

    As you were.

    Ladies and Gents,

As the UCD Students Union sabbatical elections have rolled around again there have been a number of threads in relation to the Union itself.
I am all for open debate on the issue and I feel that it would be best for everyone to declare their association with the Union. (i.e: if you are a council member)

Me, I have no association with the Union. (Politics sure isn't my strong point :) )

If everyone does this is would make for a far better discussion.

Also, if anyone feels that this is unfair or unnecessary then I will refer to the following thread...

How will it make the discussion better?

Seriously? In a thread about the SU president, people who know and work with him claiming to know nothing about the union, thats dishonest. But to say that in order to comment on the union, you cant be involved in it, and that is whats at stake here is BS.

It will be used as an excuse to dismiss someones points. How is it relevent?

i thought this thread would be a good idea because of the parallel bickering in the last one over who was/wasn't in the su. it made the threads hard to read and the discussion hard to follow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,885 ✭✭✭Stabshauptmann

Just to be sure we're on the right track, which thread?

Just as logical a solution to putting a yellow star on peoples arms is nobodys allowd to ask the question. Respect someones privacy. Its a fundamental human right.

The answer to the question has no benifit to the discussion.

Pretending to have no affiliation is dishonest, however failing to disclose it is not. Its privacy.

I don't think there's any suggestion that a member of the union would not be allowed to comment on a union matter, just for the sake of clarity they are being asked to state their affiliations. Its nothing to be ashamed of or kept hidden and they aren't gonna be condemed or dismissed as a result IMHO.

You aren't a member of dramasoc are you now Kaptain Redeye? If younot you should think about it as you've got a great knack for acting up and being a drama queen.
State your affliation and get over it. It is to stop any hidden agenda or any perceived hidden agenda. To compare it to being branded like a jew is pretty pathetic and down right insulting.

Jesus, for the auditor of Dutchsoc you're pretty fúcking uptight.

Neither is being a jew, gay, black or any other reason ppl get persecuted for. But lots of ppl hold unexplained or unjustified biases.
and they aren't gonna be condemed or dismissed as a result IMHO.
You might not condemn or dismiss anyone, but take a stroll over to the politics board. A few months ago (last time I read the board) any posters who admit to voting SF or being members had ALL their posts on ANY subject dismissed out of hand and threads inevitable end up about a discussion of the IRA.

Well if you didnt take offence to the term "like a common jew" then there would be something wrong with your sense of decency.
And you've hit the nail on the head there, "any perceived hidden agenda".
Some posters will simply say, well you would say that, you're a member of the SU council.

Pythia was ready to use it as a rebuttal. Can you honestly say that no one will perveive a hidden agenda because a poster is involved in the union? Are you going to take on the mantel of thought police as well?

No, I just watch all of southpark season 8&9 back to back and love eric cartman. Does the phrase "like a common jew" sound plausable to you? [edit]And I wouldnt invoke goodwins law now would I? :)[/edit].

I can see the need for sab. officer or volunteer officers to declare their involvement since its at such a high level, but I still cant see the need or benifit for everyone else to declare their affiliation

No I wasn't. I was just interested to see if you had involvement in the SU seeing as you seemed to have strong views on it.

And if your answer is the same for both then what use has the info, hence why I dont believe the question should be asked or answered

It matters because I think if you are associated with the SU, you should declare it, as the rules on this forum dictate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,885 ✭✭✭Stabshauptmann

Pythia, if someone convinces me of the point, Ill post it. I think that you cant admit why you needed to know proves my suspicions about why ppl want the info.

Kaptain Redeye of you don't want to post it up then don't.

Nobodies arguments are going to be dismissed if they are connected with the Union. I think that most people would just prefer to know where everyone is coming from, whether they are staunchly defending the Union, or vehemently attacking it.
