    I just joined a gym. I wanted to lose some weight, tone up and build some muscle. I got a program made for me by the gym. It consists of about 30 minute C.V. work and 1 set of weights on a variety of machines. (bicep curl, tricep curl, leg curl, shoulder press, seated row, ab crunches and leg press). I was talking to a guy that works in another gym and he said that you should not do CV work and weights at the same time. He said it had something to do with the chemicals that were released by doing each exercise. Does anyone know if this is true?

    To a certain extent. Heavy weight training causes the release of cortisol after 60 to 90 minutes.

    Cortisol is catabolic to muscle tissue and will cause wastage due to the liver being glycogen depleted after exercise.

    However if you carry out your weight training then sip a maltodextrin drink while doing cardio you should be fine.

    Incidentally the muscle catabolism effect of cortisol would be very much academic if you don't work that hard during the weight session or if you're not glycogen depleted.

    I usually bring a ready made shake with me consisting of whey protein and maltodextrin for my cardio session (both bought from http://www.tmof.com )
