Injuries Question

Right, couldnt think of any other forum to put this in so here goes....

I play soccer at a competitive level, we train hard twice a week (one being very hard fitness work). I never (touch wood) pick up bad injuries. Knocks and bruises, slight strains, yes but nothing bad, I never miss games through injury. I would consider myself fit, and am getting fitter as the season goes on.

My problem is, my brother has noticed a clicking/cracking sound to come from my ankles and knees from time to time as I walk around the house after a good session. These are very audible and Ive had them a while without really worrying about them because of my history with injuries. Is there something wrong here? And does anyone have any suggestions?

I dont take any vitamin pills or any other sort of stuff, in my bros "expert" medical opinion he reckons I should start maybe taking something to try and cure this as he thinks its down to stiffness or something. I never worried about it before but I am now a bit that someone else has pointed it out.

    Any help most appreciated.

Clicking knees without pain are probably nothing to worry about. I think it's the result of having excess synovial fluid or something like that.

Well... the best way for you to solve that question is by going to a professional in Sports Medicine and he, better than no one else, will help you out in the best way.

Yeah i'd agree there, arrange an appointment with a physio/sportsinjuries person.

But in the meantime you could try taking a glucosamine/chondroitin supplement, see if it makes any difference, though these are mainly used for joint pain(I think) and you're not in pain so it's up to you.

    Hi Jivin Turkey,

The clicking is more than likely nitrogen trapped in the joints. It's perfectly harmless and normal. On the other hand it could be an indication of muscular imabalnce and over tight ligaments and tendons, resulting in the patella being slowly pulled out of place. As already suggested a trip to a physio or a Sports / Neromuscular therapist.

In the meantime I'd suggest drinking three cups of Ginger tea a day, morning noon and evening. It's simple to prepare and quite tasty. Buy some root ginger in the supermarket take two slices (peeling the skin off) and place in a mug of boiling water for 5-10 mins and drink. This is a Chinese Medicinal treatment for "Cold Invasion" of the Joint and will promote internal heat. Not only making your muscles and joints faster more supple and less prone to injury but will keep you warm during winter as well. Ginger nut biscuits are pretty nice too.
