Play with the knobs. Seriously, play around with the knobs. I was playing a member of this boards 5 string bass recently and he didn't even know it had an active eq...

dude... seriously what are you smoking???

whatever it is... i want some ;)

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

It's a pisstake. I was out playing someone's bass, asked them what the battery was for and then informed them that their bass was active. He had it for two years and had no idea.

    Also, I've been smoking turf.

When was the last time you got a manual with a guitar though?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

Emmm... honestly, the last time I bought a guitar... or rather the Ibanez bass. It had a wee manual which explained what every knob does. So I read it and the fog cleared and a miriad of tone lay 'neath my fingertips and the heavens roared and the mountains did quake and Poseidon himself did tremble in the deep...

Damn, wish I never did acid...

Mmm, acid. Something that's always intruiged me.

I may be purchasing another HB soon. 5 string bass this time...

5 strings are for pussies. Get a 6.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

I was actually thinking about it. But it's more :( Throw me €50 and I will though :P

Sell yourself. Get €50. Get a 6. They are the way forward. Then rip the frets outta that thing a really hurt the neighbours. 5 strings? What's the point? It's like a mullet. Not quite short hair, not quite long hair... just wrong. 6 strings, my friend, walk towards the light.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

    I'm already in the light. I'm a guitarist :D

Well, I'm planning on selling my current bass and case for €130 which leaves me €70 short for that fecker (€177 plus €23 shipping)

Anyone want a kidney or a few pints of blood?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

Ahhhhh dear Feylya, you are in the glow of a My Little Pony torch, soon will come the true enlightenment of the bassist and then your life can really begin

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Jesus dude, you really need to step away from all that acid...

Of course, I need a fecking bass amp too :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

And if you go for something with a low B, you gotta be looking at a 15" speaker, but if you want to play up high, gotta have a 10" and a tweeter too.

As Jay Z said so righteously, It's A Hard Knock Life... y'all

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Hmmm, mate's father got a peavey bass amp for €120 a while back. It is nice. :D

    harley_benton_hbb6000_6string_ebass_pimx_164295.jpg Guess the price.

    Hard knock life indeed.

    About €300?

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

    €420...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

Nice. You just wonder where they're saving the money.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Cheap labour, slightly sub par hardware.

Especially considering the plywood spacer on my fretboard....

    Ay Caramba! That's nasty.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Tis. But it just gives me reason to get a nice ebony board with no face markers and blue led side markers :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,312 ✭✭✭mr_angry

Or chop rediculous amounts of mahogony.

ahhh no. In the name of Limp Bizkit NO!

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Side markers you fool! Only I'll be able to see them when I'm playing. Although, I did see a Sims Custom bass the other night. Looked pretty good.

    image046.jpg

And leave my mahogany out of this.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

And in case anyone is wondering about what I'm talking about with cutting the guitar in half, it's to do this:

I know, I know. Me no likee. They become irrelevant if there is a blue light shining on you onstage. Then you can see nothing. What are you gonna do then? Huh? Well? ;)

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Meh, I don't even look at the guitar when I'm playing... :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

Who do you look at then?

Edit -> Oh, wait, wait, I know! You're looking at the bass player to tell you when to change chords! Me Stupido! How could I forget? You know, Feylya dear boy, sometimes you seem quite lucid and I forget you're a guitarist! :D

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Bassist? What's that? I don't need no stinkin bassist. I look at my amp, giving out about the tone coming out of it!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

    [wink]Yeah, of course you are [/wink] :p

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Smart arsed bassists... Go back to staring at your feet.

What do you think of that 6 string for €420 though?

Looks nice, but could be a piece of shyte. Worth a gamble though, you could alwyas sell it for more here. Still, 6 strings is so much fun. Takes a while to get used to where everything is but for the added range you get, it's worth the stress. Then it's just a matter of changing your playing style to take advantage of the extra range (more than a regular guitar) while still 'keeping it real' down at the bottom end. The low notes are best used sparingly. I did a gig with my mates blues band just after I got the new pickups and kept the B string for a few special moments when I wanted to rattle the rafters.

I am so easily amused

    A true bassist :p

Yeah, I'd love to gamble on it but €450 is a lot of money :( And notice the arm cut away. It goes through the quilt top...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

If you're unsure, walk away, I don't want to get into another arguement about the sturdiness of where neck and body meet but, suffice to say, I think it's rather important. I'm keeping an eye out for a second hand Carvin 6 to defret. I had one in mind on Chrisguitars but it got sold two days before I tried to put a deposit down. You'd get a regular one for about $500-$550. Might be worth an extra bit of saving?

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Saving is not one of my strong points tbh. I'd like to get that one to try it but I may just try and get the cheaper 6 string for €200. Besides, if the all explodes, I'll have another project guitar to work on...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

Sound logic there. Plus 6 strings isn't for everybody, it'd be a pain in the arse to get a 6 and then think "I should've got a 5"

    Anyway, check this out

Meh, if I don't like the 6 string, I can flog it to you :P

Hmm, funky. Looks like there's a piezo bridge on it to...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

If I fall into a hole filled with money, I will get that guy to build me a fretless 6. That's from the guy who made the rosewood pickups. I dig his work man, I really do.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Buy the cheapo HB 6 string and get the frets pulled then filled with pieces of maple veneer. Not as nice as that one but meh, it's a fretless 6 string for €200.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

    Emmmmm... nah, think'll we'll call that Plan Z ;)

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Hmm, 5 string fretless HB bass, €166..

Man, I really got start getting commission from EMG and HB!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

I thought you had tired of the EMG sound?

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

    Had I? I don't believe I have...

Although, I was playing a gorgeous Fender Showmaster with Seymour Duncans. Man, I want that guitar! It doesn't even feel like a Fender.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 631 ✭✭✭daram

Showmasters are sweeeet. whatya mean it doesnt feel like a fender...

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya
