It's funny... I thought the words "of all time" was in the title of this thread and yet, with the exception of Gandalf and one or two that posted after him, nearly all of the films listed are from the last three or four years! Ten to fifteen at the most!

Has cinema really jumped that far ahead?

    Do the likes of

    Apocalypse Now
    Citizen Kane
    Psycho
    2001: A Space Odyssey
    Bladerunner
    Clash of the Titans
    Jason and the Argonauts
Day of the triffids (original film)
Day of the Triffids (mini series - which is sort of a film)
    Dune
    1 million years BC
    The land that time forgot
Journey to the centre of the Earth
    Planet of the apes
the first men in the moon
The day the earth stood still
    War of the Worlds
Plan 9 from outer space (*has* to be in there)
    forbidden Planet
The wizard of Oz (you may have been a kid, but I bet you loved it!)

no longer count? Have special effects removed the value of good story and originality?

ah, me in old and crotchety mood today frown.gif

yes, I realise that these are nearly all sci-fi and fantasy but that's my preferred genre... I find it impossible to pick the ten best (in my opinion) of all time.. there are different films for different moods. I thought the matrix was a great film, special effects were most impressive, pace was good.. but I prefer Bladerunner.. better story just more appealing but in some circumstances I would prefer to sit and watch citizen Kane or Its a wonderful life or maybe Clash of the Titans...

    <oops, someone left the ****e tap running>

Well some of the films that didn't make it into my top ten but were very close to it were

    12 Monkeys
    Do the Right Thing
    Heat
    Life is Beautiful
    Pulp Fiction
    The Untouchables
    Ben Hur
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
    Excalibur
    The Fisher King
    Kelly's Heroes
    A Night to Remember
    Run Lola Run
    The Searchers
    The Thing
    Robocop
    When we were Kings

.....maybe we should have made this a top thirty.

    Gandalf.

(Dying of a severe hangover after a supplier brought us out last night so incapable of doing any worthwhile work today :P)

This thread is quickly turning into "Post the name of every film you can think of". For anyone yet to post - before you press the "Submit Reply" button.. sit back, give it another half hour's thought, then when you're sure you have your top TEN films, post them. The whole point of these "Top Ten" lists is that narrowing down to 10 of your definitive favourite films says a lot more about a person than a whole bunch of names rattled off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,592 ✭✭✭✭Dont be at yourself

Quite hard to choose - the list will change according to my mood, but here goes: (in mo particular order)

    Empire Strike Back
    Return Of The Jedi
    Shawshank Redemption
    The Matrix
    This Is Spinal Tap
    Enter The Dragon
    Pulp Fiction
    Usual Suspects
    Full Metal Jacket

Even though I was their captive, the Indians allowed me quite a bit of freedom. I could walk freely, make my own meals, and even hurl large rocks at their heads. It was only later that I discovered that they were not Indians at all but only dirty-clothes hampers.

    Firstly Con Air?? wtf?!?!?

In no order, here are 10 films i really like, but I can't narrow my tastes over the years down to 10, so here are some i like now, next year a few changes will be apparent.

    Citizen Kane
    2001
    A Clockwork Orange
One Flew Over The ****oo's Nest
    Godfather Part 2
    Full Metal Jacket
    Platoon
    The Usual Suspects
Pet Cemetery (This one is here purely for the fact i loved the book and the film was very scary)
Streets of Fire (inspiration for Resivoir (sp?) Dogs)

I was very suprised by some of the lists. kudos to LoLth for pointing out the obvious. The first list was a joke i'm sure, to rank episode 1 over the others in the series?!? And to rank snatch and lock stock.. excellent films i do agree and i enjoyed both of them, but the title top ten films implies that the films chosen have more than a comic side but rather their directing or ground-breaking acting defined something for you.

I know i'm rambling but, why is it when ever this thread comes up ppl post up the last 10 movies they've seen lately, like SMAK shrek? tell me you're pulling the ****???

Ok i've forced my opinion enough, I take back everything I just said biggrin.gif

Ok after rethinking my list i put it to movies i have watched most and taken bits to heart here goes:

lower class: Movies i actually bothered to buy:
    Indiana jones (all 3)
    Original star wars saga
    Braveheart
    gremlins

Middle Class: Films i watched more then once in a week:

    Matrix
    Fight Club
    Bridge Too Far
    2001
    alien1 and alien3

Top Class Films: Only 2 films have i ever rewinded and watch through again in the same night:

Aliens (special edition)-This movie has put me on to everything tha is me Comics, films, games everything was born of this film i want to work in film because of it. I watched it 2 times one night again the next morning and a total of 54 times for the first 3 years i had it, lost count afterwards.

Tenchi Muyo in love -Its japanese its a cartoon but for some untold reason i luved everything about it and rewinded it twice that same night. I have had the film for only a week and i have watched it 9 times.

I agree on aliens, the directors cut is better though. I wouldn't put it in a top ten but it was an excellent film for it's genre. I always had this urge to play UFO afterwards....

    Childsplay - now banned??

I think Child's Play 3 was taken off the shelves briefly a few years back but I don't think that the film is banned. Is it?

Also there was a Macauley Culkin film called The Good Son which was refused a cert in England because it was about a child murderer and it followed too hot on the heels of the Bulger killing.

straight from my imdb voting history:

    1. Apocalypse Now
    2. La Vita e Bella (Life Is Beautiful)
    3. 2001:A Space Odyssey
    4. Fight Club
    5. Memento
    6. Airplane
    7. Back To The Future
    8. Mallrats
    9. The Hill
    10. Das Boot

just had a quick glance up and anyone who puts Gladiator or a Tom Hanks film (apart from Big) in their top ten needs to watch some decent films very quickly.

Woah! What's your objection to Gladiator Kali? That film must at least be in my top 30 for the opening battle scene alone. I thought: Excellent cast, fantastic cinematography, strong script and purposeful direction. I certainly can't see why it couldn't be in someone's top 10. I'm sure you have your reasons which you'd no doubt love to share. smile.gif

Of course, I haven't bothered to try to compile my own top ten because it would take too much time at the mo, but maybe later on in the week.

I think the point Kali's trying to make is that Gladiator, while an ambitious film for its era, pales in comparison with the scope and grandeur of Ben Hur, Spartacus, or indeed I, Claudius. Gladiator is essentially an action film surrounded by an unoriginal plot(a fairly obvious blend of the 3 films just mentioned).

Unoriginality alone does not a bad film make though (eg- The Magnificent Seven). Gladiator's lack of a clear message also chafes- especially since most hero-centered films usually have a message. Which brings us to the unavoidable truth about our heroes/villains- Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix simply do not measure up to the screen presence of Stephen Boyd, Kirk Douglas, Charlton Heston, Sir Lawrence Olivier, Tony Curtis, Charles Laughton or Sir Peter Ustinov. These actors are simply in a different class. As are the respective directors- Billy Wilder and Stanley Kubrick are a cut above Ridley Scott- which is certainly saying something (Scott being no mean director).

I'm not saying Gladiator isn't a good film- considering the era in which it is made, it's a fantastic tribute to the sword & sandals epic. I merely point out that it would be an unlikely contender for a Top 10 Movies Ever slot.

Of course, the choice is left to the individual, but the unavoidable truth stares at one in the face so much, that one should meet it sooner rather than later. smile.gif

    This was a tough one.

On what do we base greatness? 10 most enjoyable movies? This will generally
turn up an 80 to 90 percent "recent" list, as people tend to remember the
more memorable "new" stuff in a more favourable light to the older stuff.

When I started writing this, I thought I'd have a number of recent movies in
there, but as it turns out, I dont really.

Despite loving a number of movies in the past few years, I was surprised
that they almost all gave way to older movies. Yes, the modern counterparts
are shinier, and have more whizz-bang tech, and n-point surround sound. This
does not make them better movies. Maybe I take my cinema too seriously.

I have excluded stuff like Star Wars on account of the horrendously hammy
acting and weak storyline, despite groundbreaking FX and huge boxoffice success.

I am hoping to be able to include at least one of the LOTR movies in here once
they come out....but thats wishful thinking - I'd be surprised if they are
classics, as opposed to just commercially huge successes.

Matrix....hmmm....close. Give me a year or two and I'll see what I think then. Once its bullet-time cinematography is no longer so radically awe-inspiring, I'll be better able to judge the movie on its own merits. Star Wars is not a classic because it was ground-breaking in the early 70's - it is a classic because 20 years later it could still hold a hige audience. Will Matrix hold up? I think it should, but I'm not convinced.

So, here we go, in no particular order.....my 10 best movies of all time.

    Shawshank Redemption
    Enemy Below
    Seven Samurai
    Rear Window
The Big Blue (aka Le Grand Bleu)
Dr. Strangelove, or how I ...
The Day the Earth Stood Still
Nosferatu (the 1922 Murnau classic - forget the remakes)
    Casablanca
    Godfather
